The Abraham’s Path – Southeastern Anatolia
Şanlıurfa – an historic Silk Road town that stood for centuries on the border between the
Roman and Persian empires, Urfa has an historic castle, mosques, caravanserais
and a huge bazaar where traditional crafts are practiced. Soğmatar – an ancient cult
center for the worship of the moon god Sin and the planets, preserved in the
emptiness of the Anatolian steppe. Han el Barur – one of the best examples of a
medieval caravanserai or trading post on the road to the East. The biblical city of
Harran, where Abraham dwelt with Sarah before traveling onto the promised land of
Canaan. Today famed for its beehive houses, this ancient Mesopotamian pilgrimage
and trading town once had an astronomical observatory and university. Suayib City –
the isolated ruins of a Roman or Byzantine town, and a hidden shrine devoted to the
Prophet Jethro. Göbekli Tepe – a newly excavated pre-historic hilltop site, thought to

The Central Anatolia Explorer
With its ever-changing panorama and softly rolling roads, the region is ideal for mountain
biking. In Cappadocia, every turn in the road brings new sights and scenes, both
historic and natural, for the biker. Mountain bikes are rapidly supplanting horses,
donkeys and four-wheel drive vehicles for both the local people and tourists.
The Ihlara valley, whose walls are honeycombed with rock churhes, is a perfect
mountainbike course. Urgup, Goreme and Zelve, the openair museum of churches
and hermit dwellings hewn out of the naked rock, and the rock pinnacles pierced with
the apertures of doors and windows.

The Lycian Way
Lycia is the historical name of the Tekke Peninsula, which juts into the Mediterranean on
Turkey’s southern coast. The mountains rise steeply from the wooded shore and tiny
bays, giving beautiful views and varied walking. The Lycians were a democratic but
independent people, with a unique art style and a high standard of living. They
absorbed Greek culture, and were later conquered by the Romans. Their graves and
ruins abound on the peninsula and the walk passes many remote historical sites.
