Preparation for the ACT Tests Choosing a Test Option You can register for one or two test Options: the ACT (No Writing), which includes the four required multiple- choice tests, or the ACT Plus Writing, which includes a 30-minute writing Test, with a higher fee. Not all Colleges require or recommend taking the ACT Writing Test. You can check out www.actstudent.org for a searchable list of colleges that have provided information about their policies. Choosing a Test Before you choose a test date check the application deadlines of colleges and scholarship agencies you are interested in. Note: You cannot Plan on receiving your scores from one test date in time to register for the next.

PreparationfortheACTTests General Test Taking Strategies for the ACT Pace Yourself Read the Directions for each test carefully Read each question carefully Answer the easy questions first Use logic on more difficult questions Answer every question Review your work Be precise in marking your answer document Erase completely when you want to change an answer

4. Strategies forTakingtheACTTests Familiarize yourself with the content of the ACT tests. Review the Information about the tests that is provided on the following pages. Refresh Your Knowledge and skills in the content areas. Review those content areas you have studied but are not fresh in your mind Identify the content areas you have not studied. Consider taking coursework to help you gain knowledge and skills in these areas before you take the ACT.

5. Strategies for Taking the ACT Tests The ACT Tests Pace yourself The ACT English Test is a 75-question, 45-minute test. The ACT Mathematics Test is a 60-question, 60-minute test. The ACT Reading Test is a 40-question, 35minute test. The ACT Science Test is a 40-question, 35-minute test. (You are not permitted to use a calculator on this test). The ACT Writing Test (Optional) is a 30-minute essay test.

6. What to Expect on Test Day Identification is required Show acceptable ID. Dos and Don’ts Dos Only bring your pencil, eraser, calculator, and admission ticket. Relax before starting the test. Don’ts Don’t bring electronics food and drinks. Don’t leave the testing room after you have been admitted. Test Preliminaries Testing will begin at 8:00a.m. as soon as everyone arrives in the testing room.

7. Taking the practice Tests Practice Test It is a good idea to take the ACT practice test so you can become more familiar with the ACT. It will be most helpful if you take the test under conditions that are similar as possible to those you will experience on test day. DO NOT DO THIS
