Over 3.5 million Americans ages 12 and older have tried heroin at least once, with the number of users doubling in just the past few years. Heroin can be injected, smoked, or snorted and leads people to become slaves to the drug, while nearly 4% of pregnant women use illicit drugs like heroin during pregnancy, risking poor fetal growth, premature birth, and stillbirth due to the life-threatening effects heroin has on the body and potential for collapsed veins and infectious diseases that also impact those around the user.
