2. A dragonfly begins its life as a nymph and a nymph looks nothing like a full grown
dragonfly. A nymph hatches from an egg or otherwise known as larvae. As soon as a
dragonfly nymph hatches from its egg it craves for food. A dragonfly nymph will eat just
about anything that moves in the water where it lives. A dragonfly nymph will eat mosquito
larvae, aquatic insects, worms and even small aquatic vertebrates like tadpoles and small
fish. In order for a nymph to catch its prey it uses a built in jet propulsion system that ejects
water from their anal opening which makes it near impossible for prey to escape. A nymph
will occasionally leave its home in the water to hunt for food on the shore. A dragonfly
nymph is so hungry, and eats so much, that you would never hear of dragonfly going on a
diet.
A nymph will shed its skin 8-17 times before it becomes an adult. Once a Dragonfly
nymph is ready to morph into a full grown dragonfly it will crawl out of the water and shed its
skin for one last time. After a nymph changes into an adult dragonfly it still eats the pretty
much the same food but does indulge on many other insects that do not live in the water.
3. Adult dragonflies are rulers of their domain, they are not shy to show other insects
who the boss is. An adult dragonfly can eat up to its own body weight in just one day. An
adult dragonfly will eat bees, gnats, mayflies, flies, mosquitoes and other small flying insects
including butterflies and moths. An adult dragonfly uses its speed and basket shaped legs to
capture its prey. Adult dragonflies are very helpful to humans because they assist in keeping
the population of annoying mosquitoes and gnats to a minimum.
An adult dragonfly can move as fast as 35 miles per hour and achieves this speed
while only flapping its wings 30 times a minute. This is incredible; because mosquitoes flap
their wings at 600 times per minute and an ordinary housefly flaps its wings at 1000 times
per minute; neither of which can outrun the grasp of a hungry dragonfly.
4. The dragonfly has inhabited the earth for over 300 million years and there are more
than 5000 species of dragonflies that exist today. Unfortunately each individual dragonfly can
only live from egg to adult for about 6 months. Surprisingly a dragonfly lives longer as a
nymph than it does as an adult.
A dragonfly protects itself by means of camouflage, blending into its natural habitat
and also by using its incredible speed to elude predators. The dragonfly’s natural enemies are
birds, spiders, frogs and not to mention the occasional children that like to put strange things
into their mouths.
5. DOWN IN THE POND I WAITED SO LONG
REMINDING MYSELF THAT I WILL GROW
AGAIN I SEE MY CIRCLE OF LIFE
GROWING AND GROWING TO MY ADULT STAGE
OPENING UP FROM MY COCOON
NOW IT’S TIME FOR ME TO FLY
FLY AWAY TO HIEGHTS SO HIGH
LEAVING BEHIND MY WATERY HOME
YEARNING ONLY TO EAT SOME MORE
6. RIDDLE
I am insect that can eat my body weight in a single day
When I see Birds, Frogs and Spiders I fly away
I am helpful to humans by eating nasty pests
When it comes to flying I am the best
Despite my name I cannot spit fire
I spend my youth in a swampy mire
WHAT AM I ?
