1. BUSHMEAT, WHO CARES?

2. Bonobos are the closest living relative to a human being sharing 98
percent of our genetic profile. It is one of the last large mammals to
be discovered by scientists and are now close to extinction. The social
bonding of Bonobos is much like that of humans. They nurture their
young until the age of seven but the offspring and parent live in the
same group and retain a bond for life.
Sex plays a large role in Bonobo societies and is used by males not only
to reproduce but to reaffirm dominance, whereas females use sex to
get what they want from the males, usually food.

6. The leopard is the most cunning of all big cats, and is prized by poachers. Up
to 500 leopards are killed every year for their fur in India alone. There are a
staggering 800 Leopards left living in India and the numbers are declining.
Due to the drastic decrease in Tiger numbers external pressure has
substituted these magnificent animals as an alternative for Tiger bone in
traditional Chinese medicines.

10. POACHING
1 Million metric tons of bushmeat comes from
the Congo alone. Poaching is the most horrific
and destructive and direct impacts on Animal
populations. The high prices paid for bush
meat drives the trade. A whole Bonobo can
cost up to 40 USD smoked. These amazing
animals are being slaughtered, in some cases
for no apparent reason. The orphaned babies
of dead mothers are torn away and sold as
pets.

13. Deforestation
With 50 percent of the Congo commissioned
to logging, the reduction in sustainable habitat
is reducing daily. The conservation of this
unique habitat is vital for the long term
security of the animals that reside within it.
Encroachment into the forested areas is
becoming more frequent as development
moves forward causing a higher chance of
human/wildlife conflict.

16. Population Growth
The growth of a population automatically
increases pressure on food and fuel resources
as well as the increasing the need for shelter.
This factor alone has many implications, one
of which has been the focus of attention
within the scientific community for years.
HIV/AIDS is the most well known Zoonosis.
Zoonosis occurs when humans/animals reside
in the same area and diseases can be spread
from animals to humans and vice versa.

The Leopard Project

The leopard project is dedicated to identifying the
remaining numbers of leopards left in Sri lanka.
They are currently trying to seek local government
approval to support them in their aid to stop
poaching

21. THE BONOBO PROJECT

The Bonobo project is working in the
D.R. Congo to fight for a reserve where
the animals will be safe. Talking to
local chiefs about the reserve and
getting them on their side to support
this proposal with the local
government. The Bonobo on the left
was two weeks old and unfortunately
didn’t survive without its mother.

The Limbe Wildlife Centre plays an active
role in local conservation efforts by
being actively involved in the
implementation of the national wildlife
protection laws and by providing a
solution of where to place animals seized
by law enforcement agencies.
Additionally, by protecting and caring for
the wild animals of Cameroon, the project
provides one of the few opportunities
for local people to see and learn about
their own precious natural heritage and
how they can take steps to ensure its
conservation.

FOR THEM TO MOVE FORWARD.
IF WE DON’T ACT NOW WE COULD LOSE OUR PRECIOUS WILDLIFE FOR
THE FUTURE GENERATIONS.
