creative writings. Types of writing emphasized
include essays, reports, summaries, personal
narratives, and arguments. The required research
paper will be based on critical analysis of classic
writers and an in-depth study of historical
documents and contemporary issues. At least one

Course OverviewCourse Overview
 Course Overview The course overview and objectives for the course are taken from
the AP English Course description for English Language and Composition published
by the College Board and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. The
choice of texts is based on the representative authors' list found therein. Students in
this introductory college-level course read and carefully analyze a broad and
challenging range of nonfiction prose selections, deepening their awareness of rhetoric
and how language works. Through close reading and frequent writing, students
develop a greater awareness of purpose and strategy, while strengthening their own
composing abilities.
 Course readings feature expository, analytical, personal, and argumentative texts from
a variety of authors and historical contexts. Students examine and work with essays,
letters, speeches, images, and imaginative literature. Students frequently confer about
their writing in class in small-group discussions, whole-group discussions, electronic
communications, and conferences with the teacher. Students will prepare for the AP
Exam in English Language and Composition and may be granted advanced
placement, college credit, or both as a result of satisfactory performance. According to
our state Department of Public Instruction, aspects of this AP course must also fulfill
the Standard Course of Study for English III Honors. Thus, this course will also utilize
writings in a variety of modes from American literature, in addition to those from other
cultures. The course also meets the most recent AP English Language and
Composition Course Description.

  • 8. Course OverviewCourse Overview  Course Overview The course overview and objectives for the course are taken from the AP English Course description for English Language and Composition published by the College Board and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. The choice of texts is based on the representative authors' list found therein. Students in this introductory college-level course read and carefully analyze a broad and challenging range of nonfiction prose selections, deepening their awareness of rhetoric and how language works. Through close reading and frequent writing, students develop a greater awareness of purpose and strategy, while strengthening their own composing abilities.  Course readings feature expository, analytical, personal, and argumentative texts from a variety of authors and historical contexts. Students examine and work with essays, letters, speeches, images, and imaginative literature. Students frequently confer about their writing in class in small-group discussions, whole-group discussions, electronic communications, and conferences with the teacher. Students will prepare for the AP Exam in English Language and Composition and may be granted advanced placement, college credit, or both as a result of satisfactory performance. According to our state Department of Public Instruction, aspects of this AP course must also fulfill the Standard Course of Study for English III Honors. Thus, this course will also utilize writings in a variety of modes from American literature, in addition to those from other cultures. The course also meets the most recent AP English Language and Composition Course Description.
