The history of Western Culture makes it clear that new technology always leads to new forms of content. The Guttenberg printing press helped usher in the novel. Tin tubes of paint and the railroad system made Impressionism possible. Thomas Edison enabled recorded motional pictures and music to become dominant forms of creative expression in 20th century even though he was mostly deaf and uninterested in telling stories. We are now almost a quarter century into digital age, but we are still listening to music and watching videos in the same way people did in the age of mechanical reproduction. We use laptops and mobile devices more like tape decks to passively play media than as platforms to enable new kinds of cultural expression and experience. Now is the moment to perceive and provoke interactive, intrinsically digital, culture to emerge and take center stage for creative people and popular culture. The Web is the largest public big data repository that humankind has created. In this overwhelming data ocean, we need to be aware of the quality and, in particular, of the biases that exist in this data. In the Web, biases also come from redundancy and spam, as well as from algorithms that we design to improve the user experience. This problem is further exacerbated by biases that are added by these algorithms, specially in the context of search and recommendation systems. They include selection and presentation bias in many forms, interaction bias, social bias, etc. We give several examples and their relation to sparsity and privacy, stressing the importance of the user context to avoid these biases.

Art has always had an uncomfortable relationship with commerce. Never more so than now that the bulk of the "creative class" is employed by the business sector in the service of selling products and increasing their bottom line. This has created a new, and often uncomfortable dynamic, where our work is now evaluated primarily for it's ability to affect consumers and sell a product and secondarily for its creative merit. These pressures have also made it difficult for our "art" to fulfill one of its essential functions -- provoke essential conversations/debates in society. This has in turn left many of us frequently feeling frustrated and unsatisfied by the work itself. It wasn't always like this, but since we can't go back, we have to find the right way to move forward. Is there an alternative pathway where we can create for business, but still advocate for principles and ideals that we believe in through our work? How do we re-establish ourselves as an artist and assert our creative/cultural authority? This session will explore all of the above, with a particular focus on the NYC market from a present day and historical perspective. As well as look at tactical ways to begin to advocate for this shift in your own work/business.

These barriers exist because the roles we play in a team environment provide us with a set of rules for interacting with each other. Ironically, these rules often prevent us from doing the very thing we’ve come together as a team to do: Collaborate! In this session, Carolyn and Anna will discuss how to break the rules and transform those roadblocks into building blocks… freeing you and your team to live up to the mantra of your choice. 1/ Learn about common communication barriers; why they exist and how they hinder team innovation. 2/ Understand the value of design synthesis as a group activity, and how play is a central component to the co-creation dynamic. 3/ Explore a type of creative team play called a Spark-a-Thon. Massive industrial machines and processes are currently being scaled down so they can easily sit on your desktop. You can have anything 3D printed at the click of a mouse button and soon we will see desktop sized machines that print much more than just plastic. Rapid prototyping has dramatically reduced the cost barriers to creating a new hardware device and access to open source software has enabled more people than ever to actually design and bring their ideas to life. The rate at which innovation occurs today is faster than ever before and the growing ability to innovate in your living room and crowd fund your idea into existence means that we are now seeing a wave of innovation that actually started in a living room, it's all very 70's and it's pretty exciting. As innovative as the desktop space can be, it's still dwarfed by the rapid innovation of large scale manufacturing. Industrial 3D printing and work force automation are only just starting to change the way the world makes and consumes products. These massive changes won't happen over night but we're on the cusp of a new industrial revolution. Within this session, Jesse will discuss his experience with manufacturing and how the the impact of new technology on the industrial scale will change the way the world creates products.

In film and television, something is said to be diegetic when it is experienced by the characters." –Dr. Who's Tardis Datacore We no longer develop content strictly for a television series, a feature film, or a single interactive experience. Today, story content must be developed for multi-platform media systems consumed through a variety of experiences. Although at first glance this may seem to complicate the development process, through deeper exploration of the relationship between story and discourse, we can better understand the nature of transmedia narrative. This talk will explore methods for understanding the development of transmedia story content, how to present this content to clients, and how fluid structuralist thinking can help us create multiple narrative experiences of a focused, singular story-world. Meaningful experience innovation can be found at the point where emerging technology, customer needs and business strategy converge. Big box retailers are in a precarious state today, evolve or die, resulting in substantial innovation across the domain. This evolution moves well beyond the retail domain, however, and will likely impact any organization that plays across physical and digital touchpoints. In the future, emerging technology will infuse data into the fabric of our world resulting in immersive, contextually relevant experiences. To generate these immersive experiences, we will need to uncover customer needs beyond those high-level key moments of truth across the journey. We need to expose the micro-moments that matter. Just as organizations invest in experience evolution, so too must they evolve their business model based on learnings. The future omnichannel organization is a nimble, learning organization driven by the changing needs of their customer. User experience professionals stand at the forefront of effective evolution. We are moving beyond the traditional interface. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of our work, we have the skills to bridge the gap between emerging technology and strategy to create new patterns of interaction. We must evolve our discipline to be ready for the future of omnichannel immersion.

When tackling social issues such as access to clean drinking water in Haiti or improving education for youth along the autism spectrum, we often see what we call a Minimal Viable Behavior. It’s the kind of irrational but habitual behaviors that resource-constrained populations often perform in order to get by on a day-to-day basis. At Greater Good studio, we design tools for positive behavior change. But before we design anything, we conduct research with vulnerable populations in context, to understand the conditions that are producing the behaviors of today. In order for us to be successful, we have to design our tools to be behaviorally competitive with current norms. But for many vulnerable populations, the Minimal Viable Behavior stands as the biggest competition of all.
