Sharing the transforming love of Jesus, across the street and around the world.
“Living God’s Grace in an Unbelieving World”
A Sermon Series on 1 Peter
“A New Kind of Witness to the World”
1 Peter 2:11-25
Peter calls us to a new way of living . . . a life of Christ-like Submission
to God’s Authority.
This passage presents three motives for submitting to authority and living
a faithful, obedient life:
1. For the sake of the unbelieving world (the Lost)
Dear friends, since you are immigrants and strangers in the world, I urge
that you avoid worldly desires that wage war against your lives. Live
honorably among the unbelievers. Today, they defame you, as if you
were doing evil. But in the day when God visits to judge they will glorify
him, because they have observed your honorable deeds.
1 Peter 2:11-12
We are immigrants and strangers in this world. (Citizens of
Heaven)
Our real battle is spiritual … our really enemy is Satan
We must combine godly living with a loving witness to the world
2. For the Sake of the Lord
For the sake of the Lord submit to every human institution. Do this
whether it means submitting to the emperor as supreme ruler, or to
governors as those sent by the emperor. They are sent to punish those
doing evil and to praise those doing good. Submit to them because it’s
God’s will that by doing good you will silence the ignorant talk of
foolish people. Do this as God’s slaves, and yet also as free people, not
using your freedom as a cover-up for evil. Honor everyone. Love the
family of believers. Have respectful fear of God. Honor the emperor.
1 Peter 2:13-17
As representatives of Jesus Christ … we must do what He did,
submitting to the authority that God gave to human government.
We must respect the office even though we may not agree with
the person in the office.
Christians must submit themselves to human authority for the
sake of the Lord… it’s what Jesus did.
3. For the Sake of Believers (US)
Household slaves, submit by accepting the authority of your masters
with all respect. Do this not only to good and kind masters but also to
those who are harsh. Now, it is commendable if, because of one’s
understanding of God, someone should endure pain through suffering
unjustly. But what praise comes from enduring patiently when you have
sinned and are beaten for it? But if you endure steadfastly when you’ve
done well and suffer for it, this is commendable before God. You were
called to this kind of endurance, because Christ suffered on your behalf.
He left you an example so that you might follow in his footsteps. He
committed no sin, nor did he ever speak in ways meant to deceive.
When he was insulted, he did not reply with insults. When he suffered,
he did not threaten revenge. Instead, he entrusted himself to the one
who judges justly. He carried in his own body on the cross the sins we
committed. He did this so that we might live in righteousness, having
nothing to do with sin. By his wounds you were healed. Though you
were like straying sheep, you have now returned to the shepherd and
guardian of your lives.
1 Peter 2:18-25
To encourage us in our suffering, Peter gives 3 images of Jesus:
1. He is our example in His life (vs. 21-23)
2. He is our substitute in His death. (v. 24)
3. He is our Shepherd and Guardian in Heaven (v. 25)

Questions for Personal or Group Reflection:
(Reread 1 Peter 2:11-25)
1. What do you think of when you hear the word submission? Why?
2. What should submission to the authorities mean to you as a follower
of Jesus?
3. What is our responsibility to government and public leaders whom we
don’t always agree with?
4. In taking Peter’s advice to slaves, how can you apply his principles to
your current workplace?
5. How does Jesus Christ’s life give you a motivation for submitting to
authority?
6. What kind of authority do you have most trouble with? Why?
7. What will you do this week to best follow Peter’s instructions in this
passage?

WCUMC Weekly News and Sermon Series on Living God's Grace

  • 1. Weekly News from WCUMC-9/22/2013 Sharing the transforming love of Jesus, across the street and around the world. “Living God’s Grace in an Unbelieving World” A Sermon Series on 1 Peter “A New Kind of Witness to the World” 1 Peter 2:11-25 Peter calls us to a new way of living . . . a life of Christ-like Submission to God’s Authority. This passage presents three motives for submitting to authority and living a faithful, obedient life: 1. For the sake of the unbelieving world (the Lost) Dear friends, since you are immigrants and strangers in the world, I urge that you avoid worldly desires that wage war against your lives. Live honorably among the unbelievers. Today, they defame you, as if you were doing evil. But in the day when God visits to judge they will glorify him, because they have observed your honorable deeds. 1 Peter 2:11-12 We are immigrants and strangers in this world. (Citizens of Heaven) Our real battle is spiritual … our really enemy is Satan
  • 2. We must combine godly living with a loving witness to the world 2. For the Sake of the Lord For the sake of the Lord submit to every human institution. Do this whether it means submitting to the emperor as supreme ruler, or to governors as those sent by the emperor. They are sent to punish those doing evil and to praise those doing good. Submit to them because it’s God’s will that by doing good you will silence the ignorant talk of foolish people. Do this as God’s slaves, and yet also as free people, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil. Honor everyone. Love the family of believers. Have respectful fear of God. Honor the emperor. 1 Peter 2:13-17 As representatives of Jesus Christ … we must do what He did, submitting to the authority that God gave to human government. We must respect the office even though we may not agree with the person in the office. Christians must submit themselves to human authority for the sake of the Lord… it’s what Jesus did. 3. For the Sake of Believers (US) Household slaves, submit by accepting the authority of your masters with all respect. Do this not only to good and kind masters but also to those who are harsh. Now, it is commendable if, because of one’s understanding of God, someone should endure pain through suffering unjustly. But what praise comes from enduring patiently when you have sinned and are beaten for it? But if you endure steadfastly when you’ve done well and suffer for it, this is commendable before God. You were called to this kind of endurance, because Christ suffered on your behalf. He left you an example so that you might follow in his footsteps. He committed no sin, nor did he ever speak in ways meant to deceive. When he was insulted, he did not reply with insults. When he suffered, he did not threaten revenge. Instead, he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He carried in his own body on the cross the sins we committed. He did this so that we might live in righteousness, having nothing to do with sin. By his wounds you were healed. Though you were like straying sheep, you have now returned to the shepherd and guardian of your lives. 1 Peter 2:18-25 To encourage us in our suffering, Peter gives 3 images of Jesus: 1. He is our example in His life (vs. 21-23) 2. He is our substitute in His death. (v. 24) 3. He is our Shepherd and Guardian in Heaven (v. 25) _______________________________________________
  • 3. Questions for Personal or Group Reflection: (Reread 1 Peter 2:11-25) 1. What do you think of when you hear the word submission? Why? 2. What should submission to the authorities mean to you as a follower of Jesus? 3. What is our responsibility to government and public leaders whom we don’t always agree with? 4. In taking Peter’s advice to slaves, how can you apply his principles to your current workplace? 5. How does Jesus Christ’s life give you a motivation for submitting to authority? 6. What kind of authority do you have most trouble with? Why? 7. What will you do this week to best follow Peter’s instructions in this passage?
