Sharing the transforming love of Jesus, across the street and around the world.

Living God's Grace in an Unbelieving World
A Sermon Series on 1 Peter

“A Faithful Life of Humility”
1 Peter 5:1-11

Therefore, I have a request for the elders among you. (I ask this as a
fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings, and as one who shares
in the glory that is about to be revealed.) I urge the elders: Like
shepherds, tend the flock of God among you. Watch over it. Don't
shepherd because you must, but do it voluntarily for God. Don't
shepherd greedily, but do it eagerly. Don't shepherd by ruling over
those entrusted to your care, but become examples to the flock. And
when the chief shepherd appears, you will receive an unfading crown of
glory. In the same way, I urge you who are younger: accept the
authority of the elders. And everyone, clothe yourselves with humility
toward each other. God stands against the proud, but he gives favor to
the humble. Therefore, humble yourselves under God's power so that he
may raise you up in the last day. Throw all your anxiety onto him,
because he cares about you. Be clearheaded. Keep alert. Your accuser,
the devil, is on the prowl like a roaring lion, seeking someone to
devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith. Do so in the knowledge
that your fellow believers are enduring the same suffering throughout
the world. After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all
grace, the one who called you into his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will
himself restore, empower, strengthen, and establish you. To him be
power forever and always. Amen.
Faithful Christian leaders commit to grow in a vital personal
relationship with Jesus Christ



Peter submitted to Christ and was willing to learn and obey all
that God had for him.
Peter had a desire to please Christ and Christ alone… setting an
example for all people under his care.

Peter gave the Church 3 biblical principles to obey in order to glorify
God in the midst of their trials:
1. Live a life of humility (vs. 5-7)
I urge you who are younger: accept the authority of the elders. And
everyone, clothe yourselves with humility toward each other. God stands
against the proud, but he gives favor to the humble. Therefore, humble
yourselves under God's power so that he may raise you up in the last
day. Throw all your anxiety onto him, because he cares
about you.
2. Be clearheaded and keep alert (vs. 8-9)
Be clearheaded. Keep alert. Your accuser, the devil, is on the prowl like
a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in
the faith. Do so in the knowledge that your fellow believers are enduring
the same suffering throughout the world.
3. Be hopeful (vs. 10-11)
After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, the
one who called you into his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will
himself restore, empower, strengthen, and establish you. To him
be power forever and always. Amen.

How does Peter describe himself in verses 1-4?
What are the qualities of a faithful pastor and leader?
How should congregations respond to and support their pastor(s)?
What advice/encouragement does Peter give for glorifying God in
the midst of trials and challenges?
Why does God see pride as such a destructive sin?
How is submission an act of faith?
Describe in practical terms what it means to throw all our
anxieties on to God. (Think of examples how you have or haven’t
given your anxieties to God. What was the difference?)

9.

What is the cause of many of your worries?
What steps of obedience will you take this week to live a life of
HOPE that Peters calls us to?

you have them (many smartphones do). But if you don't have one, come
anyway and share with someone else. It's for all ages and the cost is

"Finding Bethlehem in the
Midst of Bedlam"
The Open Door Class invites you to join us at 9:00 AM on Sunday,
November 24 as we take time to reflect on the true meaning of
Christmas with a 5-week Advent study.
Christmas or confusion, Bethlehem or bedlam . . . Which will you
choose this year? The truth is, we don’t have to choose, because
Christmas always happens right in the midst of our confusion. God breaks
into our confusion and is made known in Jesus Christ.
That’s what this study is about––how Christ breaks into our chaos and
confusion and brings Christmas––how Bethlehem always happens in the
midst of bedlam.
This thematic Advent study for 2013 has five sessions.
Each chapter includes questions for reflection and
discussion, a brief prayer, a focus for the week, and six
daily Bible readings for personal devotional time during
the week.
All are welcome. Books are $10. Contact Don Morgan at
dsmorg2@comcast.net to order.

I urge the elders: Like shepherds, tend the flock of God among you. Watch over it. Don't shepherd because you must, but do it voluntarily for God. Don't shepherd greedily, but do it eagerly. • 2. himself restore, empower, strengthen, and establish you. To him be power forever and always. Amen. Faithful Christian leaders commit to grow in a vital personal relationship with Jesus Christ   Peter submitted to Christ and was willing to learn and obey all that God had for him. Peter had a desire to please Christ and Christ alone… setting an example for all people under his care. Peter gave the Church 3 biblical principles to obey in order to glorify God in the midst of their trials: 1. Live a life of humility (vs. 5-7) I urge you who are younger: accept the authority of the elders. And everyone, clothe yourselves with humility toward each other. God stands against the proud, but he gives favor to the humble. Therefore, humble yourselves under God's power so that he may raise you up in the last day. Throw all your anxiety onto him, because he cares about you. 2. Be clearheaded and keep alert (vs. 8-9) Be clearheaded. Keep alert. Your accuser, the devil, is on the prowl like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith. Do so in the knowledge that your fellow believers are enduring the same suffering throughout the world. 3. Be hopeful (vs. 10-11) After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, the one who called you into his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will himself restore, empower, strengthen, and establish you. To him be power forever and always. Amen. _____________________________________________ Questions for Personal or Group Reflection: (1 Peter 5:1-11) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. How does Peter describe himself in verses 1-4? What are the qualities of a faithful pastor and leader? How should congregations respond to and support their pastor(s)? What advice/encouragement does Peter give for glorifying God in the midst of trials and challenges? Why does God see pride as such a destructive sin? How is submission an act of faith? Describe in practical terms what it means to throw all our anxieties on to God. (Think of examples how you have or haven’t given your anxieties to God. What was the difference?)

  • 7. "Finding Bethlehem in the Midst of Bedlam" The Open Door Class invites you to join us at 9:00 AM on Sunday, November 24 as we take time to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas with a 5-week Advent study. Christmas or confusion, Bethlehem or bedlam . . . Which will you choose this year? The truth is, we don’t have to choose, because Christmas always happens right in the midst of our confusion. God breaks into our confusion and is made known in Jesus Christ. That’s what this study is about––how Christ breaks into our chaos and confusion and brings Christmas––how Bethlehem always happens in the midst of bedlam. This thematic Advent study for 2013 has five sessions. Each chapter includes questions for reflection and discussion, a brief prayer, a focus for the week, and six daily Bible readings for personal devotional time during the week. All are welcome. Books are $10. Contact Don Morgan at dsmorg2@comcast.net to order. SOCK IT TO HOMELESSNESS You can make a difference in the life of a homeless person.
