8. Save the males… Shannon Faulkner was accepted in 1993 as an applicant to the Citadel. On her application, no gender was specified, and was accepted on merit alone. Jan. 1994 she enrolled in day classes After legal battles won, she was allowed to enroll in the Corps of Cadets program. She joined an otherwise all-male class on August 15, 1995.
9. After only four hours of military indoctrination training, she spent the majority of the first week in the medical infirmary due to medical issues and emotional distress. She left after one week after severe harrasment. Faulkner won her lengthy court battle and was allowed to enroll as a member of the Corps based on the 14th amendment.
