Chapter 4
 Journal
 Define sexuality from a Biblical perspective
 What would you do if you were pregnant or your
GF was pregnant?
 Where would you go for help?
 SEXUALITY--Key element of making us who we
are -- wholistic being
 A.Teen sexuality – a person’s concept of
himself & herself as a male or female –
wholistically
1. Involves the physical, intellectual,
emotional, social, & spiritual dimensions
2.Show our maleness or femaleness in the
way we talk, walk, move, dress, laugh,
dream
3.Teens must establish their own sexual identity
– sense of themselves as a male or female –
which is influenced by:
▪ Physical changes – hormones (body
chemicals) – mood changes
▪ Social changes – more peer oriented than
family oriented – peer pressure
▪ Media pressure –TV, movies, music,
commercials, which often imply that sexual
activity is necessary for mature person
▪“if you’ve arrived to
manhood/womanhood”
▪“if you’re a man, you’ll lay a girl”
4. “THE LIE”
▪Seeing sexual activity as a natural
outcome of hormones working, or
natural outcome of our emotions
▪WE are responsible to give the culture a
different message
▪Values come into play here
Questioning, evaluating, & making
values on your own
 B. For the Christian, sexual activity before
marriage is wrong –
 God’s desire that we save that beautiful gift to be
shared in the context of marriage
 Virginity is the greatest gift you could give your
spouse some day
 ABSTINENCE is the ONLY choice
 C. However, for those who choose to live
outside God’s principles, there are
consequences
 Emotional
▪ Does more damage than most physical consequences
 Pregnancy a possible consequence
 Risk of STD
 Transmission of HIV causing AIDS
 D. Some choose to be sexually active & use
contraceptives to prevent pregnancy
▪ ONLY FORYOUR INFORMATION FOR MARRIAGE
 Condoms – decrease STD’s, don’t eliminate
 Oral contraceptives – the pill, does nothing for STDs
 Foams – kill sperm, DON’T ELIMINATE STD
 Diaphragms – don’t let sperm get to fertilized egg, DON’T
ELIMINATE STD
 RU-486 or Plan B pill – kills fertilized egg, DON’T ELIMINATE
STD
 Abortion – PLAIN HORRIBLE
 ABSTINENCE ISTHE ANSWER
 ABSTINENCE ISTHE ONLY SAFE SEX
** In US, 1 out of every 9 girls b/w ages 15-19
become pregnant, however, birthrate has
dropped by 12% b/w 1996 & 2005
 Due to contraceptives? RU-486? Abortions?
 Unplanned pregnancy is a scary time
 disbelief, consequences, difficult decisions
 Need to talk to many people for input and advice
 A. Decision-making process -- sources of help
 1. fathers to be
▪ Active participant, rights & responsibilities
 2. Parents
▪ Emotional support in spite of disappointment, hurt, anger, pain
 3. Clergy
▪ Source of advice & support
 4. School personnel
▪ Advice, assistance
 5. Family planning counselors
▪ Bethany, Alpha Center – Christian Organizations
 Identify decision to be made
 What should we do now that we are statistic of teen pregnancy?
 Identify alternatives
 List options – marriage, single parenthood, adoption?
 Consider consequences of each alternative
 Pros and cons of each, weigh them
 Choose best alternative
 What’s best for you
 Best for baby
 Act on decision
 A decision isn’t meaningful until it is acted on
 Evaluate decision
 Right or wrong? What could do differently next time?
 B. Considering alternatives
 1. Single parenthood
▪ Huge responsibility & life time commitment
▪ Raising child, household chores, financial obligations
▪ How much help from father & family members
▪ Both emotional & financial support
 2. Marriage
▪ Divorce rate for females who marry b/w ages 14 & 17
twice as high as those 18-19, or three times as high ages
20-24
▪ About 80% of teens who marry b/c of pregnancy divorce
within 6 yrs
▪ Often low incomes, little education
▪ Often feel socially isolated – difficult to fit in
▪ Adjusting both to marriage & parenthood - extremely
difficult
 3. Adoption
▪ Opportunity perhaps for better care, guidance, love
▪ It’s a loving choice
▪ Need to enfold people that are in desperate situations –
not isolate them
 4. Pregnancy termination
▪ Nice name for abortion
▪ Certainly NOT an option for Christians
▪ Abortion is a part of the kingdom of darkness
▪ Blinding eyes to the truth
 Fewer choices
 Sports, job, college, friends outtings,
 Health risks
 Before age of 20, mother’s body is still growing
 May not be able to provide for baby
 Toxemia and iron deficiency
 More likely to be premature or low birth weight
 Financial problems
 Paying for needs of child
 Work without an education
 Part-time job + education
 Social and Emotional stresses
 Can’t handle all that is going on
 Want to be with friends
 Too many changes and responsibilities
 Groups of 3 or 4
 I will assign you an STD 
 You will make a PowerPoint presentation hi-
lighting the key facts
 Cause/How obtained
 What is it?
 Symptoms
 Treatments
 How it effects guy/girls
 Can it effect baby
