Placer Dome Care Project 7 Years Out
We went to the Dept of Mineral and Energy to discuss a Social and
Labour Plan (SLP) we submitted for the Sedibelo Platinum project.
The SLP includes all the Community Development programs we
intend to implement in detail. This is a document the Department
must approve before a Mineral Right Application is granted. It
consists of three sections, and this section is the cause of non
approval in most of the cases. If it is not approved, you are not
allowed to mine, as simple as that. So you can imagine the
importance of the document.
As the meeting went on, I heard concepts and requirements very well
known to me. This went on for about one and a half hours.
At a point I told the woman that I clearly understand what she was
saying and what the Department’s requirements are and
furthermore, if she has ever heard of the Placer Care Project,
because we have followed a similar process. Guess what, the
Department of Mineral and Energy has based their Social and
Labour Plan requirements on the Placer Care Model. It has become
a legal requirement. She knew it in detail.
