1. Learning Outcomes
Teachers-in-training should be able to:
• Distinguish between assessing process and product of writing
using a discussion forum.
• Create and use writing assessment tools to assess children’s
writing in a self-created blog
• Establish standards and benchmarks for writing tasks using
Google docs
3. Activities
• Identifying different types of assessment portfolios and journal
and developing ways to use them to assess writing tasks
• Develop rubrics, checklist for different types of writing
• In groups of 3 students will use Google docs to establish
standards and benchmarks for writing tasks
4. Content
• Assessment drives instruction.
• Some possible skills to assess – directionality,
proper spacing, piece makes sense, uses
complete sentences, has paragraphs, piece has
beginning, middle and end, stays on task/topic,
has interesting lead, knows letter sounds
(Areglado & Dill, 1997).

• Benchmarks and standard are accepted levels
used to judge pieces across the board
• Assessment Tools/Techniques – writing journals,
writing portfolios, observation and checklist,
conferencing, self-assessment

be ‘recognisable’ but they know what they are
