The nervous system consists of the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS contains the brain and spinal cord, while the PNS contains nerves that connect the CNS to sensory organs and other parts of the body. The PNS can be further divided into the somatic nervous system, which controls voluntary movements, and the autonomic nervous system, which regulates involuntary functions like digestion. The autonomic nervous system has two divisions - the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems - that work in opposition to activate the body during stress or rest.
