Tip #1:
Plan unique & fun events to get more
employees interested
99
Spotlight events
What is a Spotlight event?
– System-wide volunteer events that we create to
engage employees and community members to
participate with a focus on improving health of
the recipients.

– Free Bikes 4 Kidz
– Healthy Meal Packing
– New Shoes, Healthy Kids
1010
Walks, Runs & Rides Program
• Allina Health will give a
charitable contribution to the
events benefitting non-profit
based on the number of
Allina Health employees that
participate.
• Employees can log one
volunteer hour towards their
Dollars for Doers reward for
each event they participate
in.
Signature Events
• Business Focus
― Senior Energy Assistance Expo
• Fundraising
― United Way Golf Tournament
• Department/Team Projects
― Canned Art Contest
― Motorcycle Poker Run
• Making the Best of Your Time
― Toys for Smiles
― MLK Day of Service Project – “Make it a Day On, Not a Day Off”
Unique Events
• Virtual Mentoring
– One on one reading mentor sessions with local 2nd and 3rd grade
students.
– Held virtually!
– Why is it unique?
• Removes the transportation barrier.
• Weaves in some in-person opportunities.
• It’s easy!
Unique Events
• Scholarship Selection Committees
– In-kind scholarships are a major component of our giving
– We recruit hundreds of volunteers every year to serve on selection
committees
– Why is it unique?
• Works with employee schedules and allows for higher engagement because
it’s virtual, moveable and at your own pace.
• Engages employees in another side of the University they don’t always see.
14
Tip #2:
Use volunteer champions to be the
ambassadors of your program
Volunteer Champions
• Ambassadors Network
– Group of champions in our headquarter city.
– Monthly update call.
– Utilize them to spread the word about upcoming events and initiatives.
– Benefits
• The more advocates for our programs, the better!
• Act as a familiar face encouraging employees to get involved.
• Provide feedback on new initiatives and policies.
Volunteer Champions
• Super Volunteers!
– A running list of accountable, dedicated volunteers.
– Receive early access to special opportunities.
– Considered a go-to resource for important or last minute needs.
17
Role of the Volunteer Champion
– Promote system-wide and site-based activities that
encourage and provide an opportunity for staff to
engage in volunteering
– The volunteer champion serves a resource for
employees.
17
Volunteer Champions
Project Leaders

19
Tip #3:
Use incentives & recognition programs
to foster excitement among
employees
Incentives & Recognition
• Incentives
― Quarterly VolunteerMatch Drawings
― Dollars for Doers
• Volunteer Challenge (Companywide)
― Friendly competition that pits teams within the company against
each other to earn the most number of volunteer hours
― First, Second and Third Place Winners
• Recognition
― Daily Juice (email), The Juice (printed), Community Report,
Facebook Twitter
― Annual Volunteer Recognition Lunch
Incentives & Recognition
• The Dean’s List
– Leverage our partnership with the Arizona Diamondbacks to send five
exceptional employee volunteers to games throughout the season.
– Showcase names in the Community Clubhouse.
– Thank You rather than an incentive!
Incentives & Recognition
• CSR Champion Program
– Launched this year through our HR recognition system
– Peer nomination process

communications.
– Seen as an honor by leadership.

card.

Notas do Editor

  1. Allina Health is a not-for-profit network of hospitals, clinics and other health care services, providing care throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin 12 hospitals 57 Allina Health clinics 23 hospital-based clinics 15 retail pharmacy sites 3 ambulatory care centers Over 26,000 employees Mission Matters, the Allina Health employee volunteerism program, offers resources and rewards to employees who share their time and talents with their community. Through a partnership with VolunteerMatch.org, Allina Health offers employees an easy way to connect with volunteer opportunities they feel passionate about. Started in May of 2011 and we have: Over 12,000 employees active/registered. Logged just over 100,000 volunteer hours in 2013 -first two years we measured registration (2011/2012) D4D 2011 - $50,100 2012 – $124,000 2013 - $136,000
  2. What is a spotlight event? Spotlight events are system-wide (happen at all our hospitals and majority of clinic) volunteer events that we create to engage employees and community members to participate with a focus on improving health of the recipients. What is the purpose? The purpose of Spotlight events are threefold: Do good in the community Engage employees Define Allina Health in the community Events: New Shoes, Healthy Kids Free Bikes 4 Kidz Healthy Meal Packing Free Bikes 4 Kidz – partner with FB4K to collect 5,000 bikes that are refurbished and given to kids in need (2010- 2014) Then give bikes and helmets away. AH provides helmets and bike safety education Healthy Meal Packing – packed meals to fed more than 200,000 people. More than 1,800 volunteers at 40 locations, 75 community organizations New Shoes, Healthy Kids, 10,000 pairs of new athletic shoes and socks to kids in need, 1,355 volunteers, over 150 community organizations ??? School Health Connection/Health Powered Kids partnered with 10 schools to pilot Health Powered Kids.org an online educational resource designed to empower kids ages 3 to 14 to make healthier choices about eating, exercise, keeping clean and managing stress. Hosted kick off events at the elementary schools with bounce houses, exercise stations, sugar/fat/muscle displays, etc. for kids and their families to attend. Why its worked: The events are easy for volunteers to just show up and volunteer They can bring their friends and family They are on site, employees can go to the site they work at or to a site near their homes – building relationships Culture – Internal culture work together to build community health Spotlight guiding principle: Building healthier communities is central to our mission and is our compass that guides us in everything we do. Why are Spotlight events important? Spotlight events are important to Allina Health for several reasons: Community impact and partnerships – Spotlights are a key tactic to engaging community partners differently than we ever have before. These events provide a tangible benefit to people in need who rely in community organizations for basic support. Whether it is providing a new (gently used) bike so a kid can experience being a kid while getting exercise, a healthy food pack for a family of four who relies on community support to eat or a new pair of athletic shoes for a child so they can run, play and go to school with pride, Spotlight events are matching resources with community needs in all the communities Allina Health serves.     Allina partnerships with area schools and community partners continue to help meet the need for community support at a fundamental level. Allina truly understands where their investment lies in our children, youth and families, and that it truly impacts the future quality of life in the communities you serve. We think this is a great partnership and builds into one of our goals of building a healthy community while fighting obesity, and building healthier lifestyles for all.
  3. Thousands of charitable walks, runs and rides take place every year in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. We give a charitable contribution to the events benefitting non-profit based on the number of Allina Health employees that participate. The more Allina Health employees who participate in an event, the bigger the charitable contribution the benefiting non-profit organization will receive. Employees must register their intent to participate on Allina.VolunteerMatch.org before the event They can also log one hour towards their Dollars for Doers rewards. $250 for 5 to 25 employees $500 for 26 to 50 employees $1,000 for 51 to 100 employees $2,000 for 101 to 200 employees $3,000 for 201 to 300 employees $4,000 for 301 to 400 employees $5,000 for 401 or more employees In 2011, more than 1,200 employees participated in 120 events, resulting in $21,500 in charitable contributions from Allina Health.
