Electronic commerce, commonly known as e-commerce or e-comm, is the buying and selling of products or
services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks. Electronic commerce
draws on such technologies as electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, Internet marketing, online
transaction processing, electronic data interchange (EDI), inventory management systems, and automated data
collection systems. Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World Wide Web at least at one point in the
transaction's life-cycle, although it may encompass a wider range of technologies such as e-mail, mobile
devices and telephones as well.
Electronic commerce is generally considered to be the sales aspect of e-business. It also consists of the
exchange of data to facilitate the financing and payment aspects of business transactions.
E-commerce can be divided into:
E-tailing or "virtual storefronts" on Web sites with online catalogs, sometimes gathered into a "virtual
mall".
The gathering and use of demographic data through Web contacts.
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), the business-to-business exchange of data.
E-mail and fax and their use as media for reaching prospects and established customers (for example,
with newsletters).
Business-to-business buying and selling.
The security of business transactions

Web Design & Development
Web design is a broad term covering many different skills and disciplines that are used in the production and
maintenance of websites. The different areas of web design include; web graphic design, interface design,
authoring; including standardized code and proprietary software, user experience design and search engine
optimization. Often many individuals will work in teams covering different aspects of the design process,
although some designers will cover them all.
The term web design is normally used to describe the design process relating to the front-end (client side)
design of a website including writing mark up, but this is a grey area as this is also covered by web
development. Web designers are expected to have an awareness of usability and if their role involves creating
markup then they are also expected to be up to date with web accessibility guidelines.
Web development is a broad term for the work involved in developing a web site for the Internet (World Wide
Web) or an intranet (a private network). This can include web design, web content development, client liaison,
client-side/server-side scripting, web server and network security configuration, and e-commerce development.
However, among web professionals, "web development" usually refers to the main non-design aspects of
building web sites: writing markup and coding. Web development can range from developing the simplest static
single page of plain text to the most complex web-based internet applications, electronic businesses, or social
network services.
For larger organizations and businesses, web development teams can consist of hundreds of people (web
developers). Smaller organizations may only require a single permanent or contracting webmaster, or
secondary assignment to related job positions such as a graphic designer and/or information systems
technician. Web development may be a collaborative effort between departments rather than the domain of a
designated department.

Practical Web Development
Basic
In practice, many web developers will have basic interdisciplinary skills / roles, including:
Graphic design / web design.
Information architecture and copywriting/copyediting with web usability, accessibility and search engine
optimization in mind.
The above list is a simple website development hierarchy and can be extended to include all client side and
server side aspects. It is still important to remember that web development is generally split up into client side
coding, covering aspects such as the layout and design, and server side coding, which covers the website's
functionality and back end systems.
Advanced
Some more advanced web developers will also have these interdisciplinary skills / roles:
GUI (Graphic User Interface) design.
Audio, Video and Animation processing & encoding (for web usage).
Flash Capabilities (animation, audio, video, scripting).
Web content management system Deployment and/or Content management infrastructure design,
development and integration.
Web applications development, integration and deployment.
Web server stress testing (how much traffic can a web server running a specific application endure
before collapsing).
Web site security analysis & testing.
Web site code optimization (which is an important aspect of search engine optimization).
Project management, QA and other aspects common to IT development.
Web Content Management Systems
A web content management system (WCMS) is a software system that provides website authoring,
collaboration, and administration tools designed to allow users with little knowledge of web programming
languages or markup languages to create and manage website content with relative ease. A robust WCMS
provides the foundation for collaboration, offering users the ability to manage documents and output for multiple
author editing and participation.
Most systems use a content repository or a database to store page content, metadata, and other information
assets that might be needed by the system. A presentation layer displays the content to website visitors based
on a set of templates. Most systems use server side caching to improve performance. This works best when
the WCMS is not changed often but visits happen regularly. Administration is typically done through browser-
based interfaces, but some systems require the use of a fat client.

VOLGHAN’s E-Commerce Office
A WCMS allows non-technical users to make changes to a website with little training. A WCMS typically
requires a systems administrator and/or a web developer to set up and add features, but it is primarily a
website maintenance tool for non-technical staff.
WCMS Capabilities:
Automated templates: Create standard output templates (usually HTML and XML) that can be
automatically applied to new and existing content, allowing the appearance of all content to be changed
from one central place.
Access control: Some WCMS systems support user groups. User groups allow you to control how
registered users interact with the site. A page on the site can be restricted to one or more groups. This
means an anonymous user (someone not logged on), or a logged on user who is not a member of the
group a page is restricted to, will be denied access to the page.
Scalable expansion: Available in most modern WCMSs is the ability to expand a single
implementation (one installation on one server) across multiple domains, depending on the server's
settings. WCMS sites may be able to create microsites/web Portals within a main site as well.
Easily editable content: Once content is separated from the visual presentation of a site, it usually
becomes much easier and quicker to edit and manipulate. Most WCMS software includes WYSIWYG
editing tools allowing non-technical users to create and edit content.
Scalable feature sets: Most WCMS software includes plug-ins or modules that can be easily installed
to extend an existing site's functionality.
Web standards upgrades: Active WCMS software usually receives regular updates that include new
feature sets and keep the system up to current web standards.
Workflow management: Workflow is the process of creating cycles of sequential and parallel tasks
that must be accomplished in the CMS. For example, one or many content creators can submit a story,
but it is not published until the copy editor cleans it up and the editor-in-chief approves it.
Collaboration: CMS software may act as a collaboration platform allowing content to be retrieved and
worked on by one or many authorized users. Changes can be tracked and authorized for publication or
ignored reverting to old versions. Other advanced forms of collaboration allow multiple users to modify
(or comment) a page at the same time in a collaboration session.
Delegation: Some CMS software allows for various user groups to have limited privileges over specific
content on the website, spreading out the responsibility of content management.
Document management: CMS Software may provide a means of collaboratively managing the life
cycle of a document from initial creation time, through revisions, publication, archive, and document
destruction.
Content virtualization: CMS software may provide a means of allowing each user to work within a
virtual copy of the entire web site, document set, and/or code base. This enables changes to multiple
interdependent resources to be viewed and/or executed in-context prior to submission.
Content syndication: CMS software often assists in content distribution by generating RSS and Atom
data feeds to other systems. They may also e-mail users when updates are available as part of the
workflow process.
Multilingual: Ability to display content in multiple languages.

Versioning: Like document management systems, CMS software may allow the process of versioning
by which pages are checked in or out of the WCMS, allowing authorized editors to retrieve previous
versions and to continue work from a selected point. Versioning is useful for content that changes over
time and requires updating, but it may be necessary to go back to or reference a previous copy.
WCMS Advantages:
Low cost: Some content management systems are free, such as Drupal, TYPO3, Joomla, and
WordPress. Others may be affordable based on size subscriptions. Although subscriptions can be
expensive, overall the cost of not having to hire full-time developers can lower the total costs. Plus
software can be bought based on need for many CMSs.
Easy customization: A universal layout is created, making pages have a similar theme and design
without much code. Many CMS tools use a drag and drop AJAX system for their design modes. It
makes it easy for beginner users to create custom front-ends.
Easy to use: CMSs are designed with non-technical people in mind. Simplicity in design of the admin
UI allows website content managers and other users to update content without much training in coding
or technical aspects of system maintenance.
Workflow management: CMSs provide the facility to control how content is published, when it is
published, and who publishes it. Some WCMSs allow administrators to set up rules for workflow
management, guiding content managers through a series of steps required for each of their tasks.
And Much More...
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in a
search engine's "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic"), search results. In general, the earlier (or higher
ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more
visitors it will receive from the search engine's users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image
search, local search, video search, academic search, news search and industry-specific vertical search
engines.
As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, what people search for, the actual
search terms or keywords typed into search engines and which search engines are preferred by their targeted
audience. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content and HTML and associated coding to both
increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.
Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks, or inbound links, is another SEO tactic.
The effectiveness of SEO may be measured by the position of a web site on a Search Engine Results Page
(SERP) when searching for a certain keyword, or by web analytics Key Performance Indexes (KPIs).

Search Engine Submission:
Search engine submission is how a webmaster submits a web site directly to a search engine. While Search
Engine Submission is often seen as a way to promote a web site, it generally is not necessary because the
major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing use crawlers, bots, and spiders that eventually would find
most web sites on the Internet all by themselves.
There are two basic reasons to submit a web site or web page to a search engine. The first reason would be to
add an entirely new web site because the site operators would rather not wait for a search engine to discover
them. The second reason is to have a web page or web site updated in the respective search engine.
Webmaster Tools:
It allows webmasters to check indexing status, optimize visibility of their websites and track visitors from all
referrers, including search engines, display advertising, pay-per-click networks, e-mail marketing and digital
collateral such as links within PDF documents.
Website Promotion:
Website promotion is the continuing process used by webmasters to promote and bring more visitors to a
website. Many techniques such as web content development, search engine optimization, and search engine
submission, are used to increase a site's traffic. Search Engine Land created an infographic of factors that
affect ranking in search engines for search engine optimization that help drive traffic to a specific website.
Directory Submission:
A web directory or link directory is a directory on the World Wide Web. It specializes in linking to other web sites
and categorizing those links.
A web directory is not a search engine and does not display lists of web pages based on keywords; instead, it
lists web sites by category and subcategory. Most web directory entries are also not found by web crawlers but
by humans. The categorization is usually based on the whole web site rather than one page or a set of
keywords, and sites are often limited to inclusion in only a few categories. Web directories often allow site
owners to submit their site for inclusion, and have editors review submissions for fitness.
Blog Advertising:
A blog (a portmanteau of the term web log) is a discussionor informationsite published on the World Wide Web
consistingof discrete entries ("Posts"). Several blog search engines are used to search blog contents, such as
Bloglines, BlogScope, and Technorati. Several online communities exist that connect people to blogs and
bloggers to other bloggers, including BlogCatalog and MyBlogLog.

It is common for blogs to feature advertisements either to financially benefit the blogger or to promote the
blogger's favorite causes. The popularity of blogs has also given rise to "fake blogs" in which a company will
create a fictional blog as a marketing tool to promote a product.
Internet Yellow Page Advertising:
Online business directories are known as IYP or Internet yellow pages. On a broader scale they are known as
vertical directories. There are consumers oriented and business oriented varieties. All providers of IYP offer
online advertising. The users of Internet yellow pages have the same intent as the users of print yellow pages.
This produces a high quality lead, much like the print phone book, because the user is usually only deciding
who to buy the product or service from, not whether or not to make a purchase.
One advantage of IYP's is they are not as prone to click fraud like Pay Per Click models. Small businesses are
finding as the Internet is evolving that Internet yellow pages / Phonebooks are easier to understand than search
engine advertising. Search engine advertising has many complications and is always subject to changing
algorithms, which can cause frustration to small businesses. SEO professionals tend to like the constant
changing of the way search engines return results, it is good for their business. Internet yellow pages allow a
small business to advertise locally and target his audience with single self-explanatory categories that most
people are familiar with such as "attorney" or "florist" or "plumbing".
Forum Advertising:
An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion site where people can hold conversations in the
form of posted messages. Depending on the access level of a user or the forum set-up, a posted message
might need to be approved by a moderator before it becomes visible. A post is a user-submitted message
enclosed into a block containing the user's details and the date and time it was submitted. Members are usually
allowed to edit or delete their own posts.
Social Network Advertising:
Social network advertising is a term that is used to describe a form of Online advertising that focuses on social
networking sites. One of the major benefits of advertising on a social networking site (facebook, myspace,
friendster, bebo, orkut...and many others) is that advertisers can take advantage of the user's demographic
information and target their ads appropriately.
There are three major classifications of Social Network Advertising:
Direct Advertising that is based on your network of friends - This can be the most effective format but
also causes the most controversy. An example is the Facebook beacon project. Based on an action
your friend has taken, you might see a message in your news feed saying 'Bob has just bought a
'RadioHead CD from MusicWorld'. This can be an extremely effective mode as often people make
decisions to purchase something or do something based on their close group of friends.

VOLGHAN’s E-Commerce Office
Direct Advertising placed on your social networking site - This is a more traditional form of web
advertising that is minimally effective. Just like you see banner ads on many other sites, this is a similar
concept, except on a social networking site.
Indirect Advertising by creating 'groups' or 'pages' - This is an innovative marketing technique in which
a company will create a 'page' or 'group' that users can choose to join. They will use this to build up
'subscribers' or 'fans' and use this to market a contest, a new product, or simply just to increase brand
awareness. These groups can quickly grow in numbers of subscribers which can become a very
effective marketing tool.
Automation and Software
Automation is the use of machines, control systems and information technologies to optimize productivity in the
production of goods and delivery of services. The correct incentive for applying automation is to increase
productivity, and/or quality beyond that possible with current human labor levels so as to realize economies of
scale, and/or realize predictable quality levels. The incorrect application of automation, which occurs most
often, is an effort to eliminate or replace human labor. Simply put, whereas correct application of automation
can net as much as 3 to 4 times original output with no increase in current human labor costs, incorrect
application of automation can only save a fraction of current labor level costs. In the scope of industrialization,
automation is a step beyond mechanization. Whereas mechanization provides human operators with
machinery to assist them with the muscular requirements of work, automation greatly decreases the need for
human sensory and mental requirements while increasing load capacity, speed, and repeatability. Automation
plays an increasingly important role in the world economy and in daily experience.

Trade Data (Guilds Info)
While many marketers recognize the financial benefits of increasing targeted awareness, some direct
marketing efforts using particular media have been criticized for generating poor quality leads, either due to
poor message strategy or because of poorly compiled demographic databases. This poses a problem for
marketers and consumers alike, as advertisers do not wish to waste money on communicating with consumers
not interested in their products. Some of these concerns have been addressed by direct marketers by the use
of individual "opt-out" lists, variable printing, and better-targeted list practices.

Direct Advertising
Targeted advertising is a type of advertising whereby advertisements are placed so as to reach consumers
based on various traits such as demographics, psychographics, behavioral variables (such as product
purchase history), and firmographic variables ... or other second-order activities which serve as a proxy for
these consumer traits. Most targeted new media advertising currently uses second-order proxies for targeting,
such as tracking online or mobile web activities of consumers, associating historical webpage consumer
demographics with new consumer web page access, using a search word as the basis for implied interest, or
contextual advertising.
Addressable advertising systems serve ads directly based on demographic, psychographic, or behavioral
attributes associated with the consumer(s) exposed to the ad. These systems are always digital and must be
addressable in that the end point which serves the ad (set-top box, website, or digital sign) must be capable of
rendering an ad independently of any other end points based on consumer attributes specific to that end point
at the time the ad is served. Addressable advertising systems therefore must use consumer traits associated
with the end points as the basis for selecting and serving ads.

Fax Broadcast:
Junk faxes are a form of telemarketing where unsolicited advertisements are sent via fax transmission.
Advertising Mail:
Advertising mail, also known as direct mail, junk mail, or admail, is the delivery of advertising material to
recipients of postal mail. The delivery of advertising mail forms a large and growing service for many postal
services, and direct-mail marketing forms a significant portion of the direct marketing industry. Some
organizations attempt to help people opt out of receiving advertising mail, in many cases motivated by a
concern over its negative environmental impact.
Advertising mail includes advertising circulars, coupon envelopes, catalogs, CDs, “pre-approved” credit card
applications, and other commercial merchandising materials delivered to homes and businesses. It may be
addressed to pre-selected individuals, or unaddressed and delivered on a neighborhood-by-neighborhood
basis.
SMS Marketing:
Marketing on a mobile phone known as SMS Marketing has become increasingly popular ever since the rise of
SMS (Short Message Service) in the early 2000s in Europe and some parts of Asia when businesses started to
collect mobile phone numbers and send off wanted (or unwanted) content. On average, SMS messages are
read within four minutes, making them highly convertible.
Telemarketing:
Another common form of direct marketing is telemarketing, in which marketers contact customers by phone.
The primary benefit to businesses is increased lead generation, which helps businesses increase sales volume
and customer base. The most successful telemarketing service providers focus on generating more "qualified"
leads that have a higher probability of getting converted into actual sales.
Online Advertising (Online Marketing)
Online advertising is a form of promotion that uses the Internet and World Wide Web to deliver marketing
messages to attract customers. Examples of online advertising include contextual ads on search engine results
pages, banner ads, blogs, rich media Ads, social network advertising, interstitial ads, online classified
advertising, advertising networks and e-mail marketing. Many of these types of ads are delivered by an ad
server.
One major benefit of online advertising is the immediate publishing of information and content that is not limited
by geography or time. To that end, the emerging area of interactive advertising presents fresh challenges for
advertisers who have hitherto adopted an interruptive strategy. Another benefit is the efficiency of the
advertiser's investment. Online advertising allows for the customization of advertisements, including content
and posted websites.

The internet has become an ongoing emerging source that tends to expand more and more. The growth of this
particular medium attracts the attention of advertisers as a more productive source to bring in consumers. A
clear advantage consumers have with online advertisement is the control they have over the product, choosing
whether to check it out or not.Online advertisements may also offer various forms of animation. In its most
common use, the term "online advertising" comprises all sorts of banner, e-mail, in-game, and keyword
advertising, including on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus. Web-related advertising has a
variety of ways to publicize and reach a niche audience to focus its attention to a specific group.

Document Sharing:
Document and file collaboration are the tools or systems set up to help multiple people work together on a
single document or file to achieve a single final version. It allowed users to create and edit documents online
while collaborating in real-time with other users. They can be accessed online from any Internet-enabled device
running any operating system. This allows people to work together worldwide and at any time, thereby leading
to international web-based collaboration and virtual teamwork.

Photo sharing is the publishing or transfer of a user's digital photos online, thus enabling the user to share them
with others (publicly or privately). This function is provided through both websites and applications that facilitate
the upload and display of images. The term can also be loosely applied to the use of online photo galleries that
are set up and managed by individual users, including photoblogs. Sharing means that other users can view
but not necessarily download the photos. users being able to select different copyright options.
Video Sharing:
A video hosting service allows individuals to upload video clips to an Internet website. The video host will then
store the video on its server, and show the individual different types of code to allow others to view this video.
The website, mainly used as the video hosting website, is usually called the video sharing website.
E-Mail Marketing:
Email marketing is directly marketing a commercial message to a group of people using email. In its broadest
sense, every email sent to a potential or current customer could be considered email marketing. It usually

trust, or brand awareness. Email marketing can be done to either cold lists or current customer database.
