The document discusses the business value of Oracle Exadata. It provides extreme performance for data warehousing, online transaction processing, and database consolidation. Exadata delivers faster access to secure business information at a lower cost by enabling cost-effective IT infrastructure consolidation. It improves strategic business value and lowers costs through dramatic storage reductions and platform consolidation savings of 25-50%.
10. Extreme PerformanceGame Changer = Integrated HW + SW Innovation Dynamically Scalable Unlimited Linear Scaling of Data Bandwidth Allows data to reside in extended memory for 10x better IO response time 5.25 Terabytes Flash per rack 10X to 100X speedup for queries Database aware storage executes queries at the disk layer 40 Gb/sec fault-tolerant unified server and storage network Breaks data bandwidth bottleneck 10x to 50x compression ratios Optimized for speed and space reduction Massively Parallel Architecture Flash Cache Smart Scans Infiniband Network Hybrid Columnar Compression
18. CompleteOptimized Enterprise Scalability & Reliability Server Storage Network Software Scalable Scales from a quarter rack to a full rack to 8 rack cluster by just adding wires Scales to hundreds of storage servers Multi-petabyte databases Fault Tolerant Failure of any component is tolerated Data is mirrored across storage servers
35. Random I/O RateUp to 1 million I/O’s per second21 Uncompressed data from Flash (full rack) – compression increases throughput by the compression ratio. 2Full rack (56 flash cards)
36. Data is stored by columnand then compressed Query Mode for data warehousing Optimized for speed 10X compression ratio is typical Scans improve proportionally Archival Mode for infrequently accessed data Optimized to reduce space 15X compression is typical Up to 50X for some data Up To 50X Exadata Software: Hybrid Columnar Compression
38. Eliminating I/OConverting Terabytes to Gigabytes 1 TB (with 10x compression) 10 TB of user data (normally 10 TB of I/O) 100 GB (with partition pruning) Subsecond “10 TB” scan 20 GB (with storage indexes) 5 GB (with Smart Scan)
39. Security AdvantageComprehensive Protection for the Exadata Platform Hardware Accelerated Database Encryption 8X faster than software-only encryption Secure data at rest on both disk and tape Transparent to applications Strong Access Controls Privileged user and multi-factor controls Protect against privileged account misuse Transparent to applications Monitoring and Reporting Streamline compliance reporting Monitor SQL and database audit data Thwart SQL injection threats
40. Brian CampSVP, Infrastructure Services KnowledgeBase Marketing “After carefully testing several data warehouse platforms, we chose the Oracle Database Machine. Oracle Exadata was able to speed up one of our critical processes from days to minutes. The Oracle Database Machine will allow us to improve service levels and expand our service offerings.”

Editor's Notes
Besides the performance gains of Exadata, every customer is looking into some type of consolidation. Lower Cost through consolation. Since the Oracle Database Machine offers extreme performance for both OLTP and OLAP workloads, customers can consolidate various pillar based or functional systems into a single machine GMB: Using Oracle’s database security options (Advanced Security, Database Vault, Audit Vault, etc.), customers consolidating workloads on Exadata can rest assured that they need not sacrifice performance and scale for security. Certified for the Exadata platform, Oracle’s comprehensive database security portfolio helps customers better satisfy their compliance mandates and protect their information from a wide array of threats, internal and external.
The benefits that this approach provide are lower cost, higher quality of service and higher manageability than current silo approach. Some organizations are adopting a piecemeal approach to this challenge by simply virtualizing the servers. While this brings cost savings because it increases the utilization of servers and reduces the need to purchase new machines, it does not contribute to ensuring a high QoS for all apps, and it creates a more complex environment to manage as the number of entities sprawls.
Ericsson saw Exadata as an opportunity to drive out costs while examining data on a broader basis. Previously Ericsson was only reporting cell data on a monthly basis. Now they are collecting daily cell data which as completely changed their view of the business. A half rack will drive the implementation of the cell tower database on Exadata.
