Bioinformatics?
Bioinformatics is a sub-field of the Biological
  Sciences
Bioinformatics is highly interdisciplinary and draws
upon the following areas of study to solve biological
  problems:
 Applied Mathematics
 Statistics
 Computer Science
Also referred to as Computational Biology
Bioinformatics - Future of Biological Research
 21st century is considered to be information technology era that has created an
immense impact in every sphere of life leading to knowledge transfer i.e.
    outsourcing of information.

 Information is Knowledge and Today’s economy is Knowledge economy.

 Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary subject between biological information and IT.

 Recent developments of the sciences have produced a wealth of experimental data
of sequences and three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules.

 Bioinformatics has been defined as the science of examining the structure and
function of genes and proteins through the use of computational analysis, statistics,
    and pattern recognition.
 A number of recent workforce studies have shown that there is a high current and unmet
demand for people trained to various levels of expertise in bioinformatics, from technicians and
technical librarians to developers of new and improved methodologies and applications
Course Aims & Objectives

 The concepts of computer science that relate to
  problems in biological sciences.
 Commercial and academic perspectives on
  bioinformatics.
 The impact of bioinformatics on the methodologies
  used in biological science.
 The influence biological science has on computing
  science.
Future and Career Opportunities of Bioinformatics
Bioinformatics: Key to Science and Technology's Future

Bioinformatics is an emerging interdisciplinary area of Science and
Technology, encompassing a systematic development and application of
IT solution to handle biological information or data obtained by
experiments, modeling, database, search and instrumentation. It touches
all areas of biology, with application to genome analysis, protein
structure, prediction, target identification, drug-design, metabolomics and
systems biology. It is of central importance in the genomic and post-
genomic age because of the vast amounts of information that are
becoming available from different disciplines for example-sequencing of
human, bacterial, rice genomes have unraveled plethora of information
which can be put to best use by using this technology.
Path Breaking Discoveries
 Biological processes in organisms
 How these processes go wrong in
     diseases
 Gene-based drugs discovery
 Drug designing
 Disease Diagnosis
 Pharmacogenomics
 Toxicogenomics
Bioinformatics promises tremendous potential and plays a crucial
Role in the future development of science and technology and job
opportunities

Research institutions.
Pharmaceutical companies.
Chemical industries.
Agriculture and allied industries working to expand the realm of information.

Bioinformatics is a career of the future. In India alone, Biotechnology and
Bioinformatics is the fastest growing employment sector after computers and
multi-media. Some of India’s biggest industrial groups are entering the
Bioinformatics field, focusing on research in industrial, agricultural and
medical biotechnology, clearly signaling a change in the market dynamics in
this sector. Reliance Industries is building a new, world class research and
development center, near Mumbai, encompassing research laboratories for all
 disciplines, laboratories for contract
The following are the job profiles in Biotech, Pharmaceutical and IT
                                 industry:

 Genomics Head ( Agilent Company)
 Proteomics Structural and Functional Analyst
 Bioinformatics Faculty or Head
 Software Developer
 Database Management
 Statistical Analytical Bioinformatics Tool Developer
 Research Assistant
 Bioinformatics Consultant
 R& D Sector
 Agricultural Sciences
 Computational Biologist
Benefits of Course:
New molecular genetics and information technologies have enabled biologists to produce and to

access large and informative data sets. The courses will provide an introductory understanding of the

databases and methods used in computational molecular data analysis. The main benefit of the

course is to provide an insight into the value of rapid access to scientific information for education

and research purposes. The human genome project has been hailed as one of the greatest

achievements in scientific history. To date, vast amounts of public, private, human and financial

resources have been invested into the sequencing of the genome. Now that this has been achieved,

the emphasis is shifting towards using this new information to:

 develop new drugs
 create new diagnostics tools
 arrive at a better understanding of disease.
Bioinformatics – the application of IT to biological problems – is
                  essential to achieve the goals.
These courses aim to provide:

 The concepts of computer science that relate to problems in biological
  sciences.
 Commercial and academic perspectives on Bioinformatics.
 The impact of Bioinformatics on the methodologies used in biological science.
 The influence biological science has on computing science.
 The course will be relevant to a wide range of industries that involve
knowledge of the networks and databases in Bioinformatics and the use and
development of computer software and to become aware of the tools and
techniques used in research and in applications.
