Understanding Amendments 11-27

Mrs. Vajgrt’s 9th Grade Social
Studies Class
Lesson Objective
Students will be able to understand the final
18 amendments of the Constitution though
the use of the reading materials and
Constitutional Jeopardy in order to be able to
produce a newspaper article that accurately
describe an amendment of their choice.
Amendments 11 (1798)
• Amendment 11 – prohibits a citizen of one
state or a citizen of another country from
suing another state in federal court.
However, a citizen may file suit in federal
court against state authorities for depriving
that person of constitutional rights.
Amendment 12
• Requires members of the Electoral
College to cast two separate ballots:
one for president and one for vicepresident.
It’s a tie – Election of 1800 was a tie
between Aaron Burr and
Thomas Jefferson and
The House of Representatives
cast the deciding vote
in the election, this
was seen as unfair.
Second place winner
before this amendment
became vice-president,
caused problems and anger.
The Civil War Amendments
All were ratified (approved) at the end of the Civil War

• 13th Amendment
• 14th Amendment
• 15th Amendment

• All slaves would now
be free.
• Formers slaves were
now American citizens
(and should be treated
equally).
• Former slaves had the
right to vote (men).
16th Amendment
• 16th Amendment
(43 years after
13/14/15th)
Congress can
collect a tax on
people’s income.
17 Amendment

• States that people instead of the state
legislature elect U.S senators. Prior to this
amendment State Legislators elected
Senators.
18 Amendment
th

18th Amendment (1919): Prohibition:
Illegal to make, sell, or transport
alcohol in any way. 21st Repealed this
19 Amendment

• Women get the right to vote
20 Amendment
th

• Changes the date of the inauguration to
January 20. Called lame duck amendment
because it refers to an elected officials
attitude after losing an election or soon to
be leaving office.
21st Amendment:
(1932)
Did away with the
18thAmendment.

• Try to list as many amendments as you can
remember.
• Pass your paper to your neighbor to the right.
• Add to the paper you just received.
• Pass it to the right again.
• Next person add to the paper.
• Return the papers to the original owner
Amendment Pair Share
• Count off 1 through 14, then begin again and
remember your number.
• Now get together with the other person with the
same number as you.
• In thirty words or less create a poster to present
to the class explaining your amendment. Use
your book to get extra details!
• This will count as a grade for presentation and
content. 20 points.

  • 1. Understanding Amendments 11-27 Mrs. Vajgrt’s 9th Grade Social Studies Class
  • 2. Lesson Objective Students will be able to understand the final 18 amendments of the Constitution though the use of the reading materials and Constitutional Jeopardy in order to be able to produce a newspaper article that accurately describe an amendment of their choice.
  • 3. Amendments 11 (1798) • Amendment 11 – prohibits a citizen of one state or a citizen of another country from suing another state in federal court. However, a citizen may file suit in federal court against state authorities for depriving that person of constitutional rights.
  • 4. Amendment 12 • Requires members of the Electoral College to cast two separate ballots: one for president and one for vicepresident. It’s a tie – Election of 1800 was a tie between Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson and The House of Representatives cast the deciding vote in the election, this was seen as unfair. Second place winner before this amendment became vice-president, caused problems and anger.
  • 5. The Civil War Amendments All were ratified (approved) at the end of the Civil War • 13th Amendment • 14th Amendment • 15th Amendment • All slaves would now be free. • Formers slaves were now American citizens (and should be treated equally). • Former slaves had the right to vote (men).
  • 6. 16th Amendment • 16th Amendment (43 years after 13/14/15th) Congress can collect a tax on people’s income.
  • 7. 17 Amendment th • States that people instead of the state legislature elect U.S senators. Prior to this amendment State Legislators elected Senators.
  • 8. 18 Amendment th 18th Amendment (1919): Prohibition: Illegal to make, sell, or transport alcohol in any way. 21st Repealed this
  • 9. 19 Amendment th • Women get the right to vote
  • 10. 20 Amendment th • Changes the date of the inauguration to January 20. Called lame duck amendment because it refers to an elected officials attitude after losing an election or soon to be leaving office.
  • 11. 21st Amendment: (1932) Did away with the 18thAmendment.

  • 17. The 27 Amendment th • Congress cannot vote itself a pay raise – any pay raise only counts for the next Congress

Take out a piece of paper • Number your paper 11-27 – put your name on it. • Put away your graphic organizer • Try to list as many amendments as you can remember. • Pass your paper to your neighbor to the right. • Add to the paper you just received. • Pass it to the right again. • Next person add to the paper. • Return the papers to the original owner

Amendment Pair Share • Count off 1 through 14, then begin again and remember your number. • Now get together with the other person with the same number as you. • In thirty words or less create a poster to present to the class explaining your amendment. Use your book to get extra details! • This will count as a grade for presentation and content. 20 points.
