1. Litter to Shelter
How our Dreams turned into Reality…
School Name: Shri Gujarati Mahajan English Medium School, Alake, Mangalore, Karnataka.
Students: Prajay, Abdul Salam Salman, Mohammed Shinan, Nukulunk Suresh Butani, Joshva
Mark.
Mentor Teacher: Mrs. Ashwini A Shenoy
Feel
1 The Kudroli bus-stop had the following 2 problems:
a. No shelter for passengers.
b. The stench of litter scattered all over the road from the Garbage Bin.
2 We felt the Need for Change.
3 We spoke to the people about the problem.
4 We realized that we weren’t the only one’s who faced the problem, but there were a
hundred more from 5 different schools & colleges since it was a Pick up point most of
them.
5 We also spoke to our Headmistress Mrs. Kavitha Shastri, who promised her full support.
Imagine
1 We planned to draft an appeal to the city corporation for the removal of the Garbage
bin & for appointment of a garbage collector.
2 We also appealed to grant the permission for a Bus shelterat Kudroli.
3 For the construction of the bus shelter our estimate was Rs. 75,000 which we planned to
raise through:
a. donations from students
b. selling newspapers brought by students
c. collecting donations from local public & organizations.
2. DO
1 We drafted an appeal with the help of our teacher.
2 With the help of our classmates, we went from house to house in groups taking their
consent & signature on the appeal.
3 We approached the Dy. Mayor, who promised her full co operation, as a result of which
the dustbin was removed & a garbage collector was appointed.
4 We also met the other concerned officers for granting the permission for the bus
shelter.
5 We placed a Donation Box in the School & requested the students for voluntary
donations. We also sold the old newspapers collected from students.
6 But we weren’t able to reach the target of Rs. 75000 required, so we approached our
management- Shri. Gujarati Mahajan Association, who readily agreed to contribute the
rest of the amount.
7 But in the mean time, we observed that few people were still throwing garbage at the
place even after the removal of the dustbin.
8 We prepared a Handbill creating Civic awareness about ‘Clean Mangalore City’ &
approached the public once again to distribute it.
9 We also prepared banners & pinned it on the wall at the place.
10 Finally, after discussing with our Headmistress & teacher we decided to plant Holy Basil
plants at the place.
11 We invited press, local public, corporator & the School management.
12 We cleaned the place & planted the saplings.
We are really happy that our hard work has finally paid off. The Mangalore City
Corporation has granted the permission for a new Bus Shelter at Kudroli. Now, everyday
when we come to school we walk on clean roads breathing the scent of refreshing Basil
and with a proud feeling that we were able to bring the change we wanted to see…
