The first official branded SharePoint technologies were released in 2001SharePoint Portal Server 2001 (codenamed Tahoe) and SharePoint Team Services (STS)SharePoint Portal Server 2001 (codenamed Tahoe) used as Portal Information through navigation and searchSharePoint Team Services (STS) used as collaboration.Get sites up and running very quickly to organize documents, events, and other digital informationCustomers wanted to use portal and collaboration features in integrated waySo both teams worked together and redesign the architecture. SQL Server as the backend data store, ASP.NET as the development platform.Web parts were first time introduced in SharePoint 2001which were part of ASP.NET server controls. In 2003, Microsoft Introduced SharePoint Portal Server (SPS) 2003 and Windows Shared Services (WSS) 2.0. SPS 2003 is licensed; WSS 2.0 was licensed as a part of windows server. SPS 2003 were offering deep portal and search functionality. Microsoft SharePoint 2010 is the Business Collaboration Platform for the Enterprise and Web. SharePoint 2010 focuses on three key areas:1.Connecting and empowering people to enhance productivity by offering improved and simplified tools to create and manage sites and associated content. Microsoft SharePoint 2010 integrates smoothly with Microsoft Office 2010 which makes it possible for users to be more productive while using a more familiar set of tools to interact with SharePoint Server.2.Unifying infrastructure to cut maintenance and training costs by providing an integrated set of features and the ability for organizations to build their business productivity solutions on top of the SharePoint Server.3.Responding rapidly to business needs by providing the ability to quickly build and deploy dynamic solutions to end users, power users and professional developers. SharePoint 2010 provides the tools to easily create business solutions that can be integrated with existing data and process.SharePoint SitesSharePoint sites are websites that aim to be an entry point to the World-Wide Web. They typically offer search capability and links to useful pages, news, or other services. SharePoint sites can be organization-wide or global, e.g., MSN, Yahoo, and Google.SharePoint 2010 offers: a rich user experience, support for multiple browsers, mobile based interaction with people and content, MS Office integration, and collaboration across the internet, intranet, and extranet for creating, editing, and managing sites.SharePoint CommunitiesSharePoint Communities enable users to collaborate with each other using smart connections across people and teams. Enhanced social networking tools available with SharePoint 2010 allows users to connect and share information through blogs, wikis, calendars, discussions, tasks, contacts, pictures, videos and much more. My Sites and user profiles provide an organized way to create, share, and find personal and professional information across the organization.SharePoint ContentOrganizations produce various types of content including documents, records, and web pages. SharePoint 2010 offers great ways to manage different types of content while maintaining strict control through governance policies to ensure compliance. Key features that make SharePoint 2010 an ideal tool for creating, authoring, publishing, and managing content are: integration with Office applications, offline client experience, speedy and easy web publishing, and the ability to create and manage custom content types and Meta data.Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Top Benefits1.Provide a simple, familiar, and consistent user experience across multiple platforms.2.Boost employee productivity by simplifying everyday business activities.3.Help meet regulatory requirements through comprehensive control over content.4.Effectively manage and repurpose content to gain increased business value.5.Simplify organization-wide access to both structured and unstructured information across disparate systems.6.Connect people with information and expertise.7.Accelerate shared business processes across organizational boundaries.8.Share business data without divulging sensitive information.9.Enable people to make better-informed decisions by presenting business-critical information in one central location.10.Provide a single, integrated platform to manage intranet, extranet, and internet applications across the enterprise.SharePoint SearchSharePoint 2010 makes it easier to find data including content and people. It does this by providing enhanced search capabilities, the ability to plug in “FAST” searches for SharePoint, connecting and indexing data from external sources, and phonetic search.SharePoint InsightsSharePoint 2010 enables collaboration and analysis to help everyone in the organization get richer insights by offering excel services, new visualization, navigation, and BI features. These features greatly facilitate and speed up the business decision-making process.SharePoint CompositesSharePoint 2010 serves as a platform to build and deploy business solutions for all types of users by providing powerful tools like SharePoint Designer, InfoPath Form, and Microsoft Access Services. Business connectivity services in SharePoint 2010 offer a nice way to create, read, update, delete and search line of business (LoB) data.SharePoint 2010 offers the flexibility of an in-place upgrade from SharePoint 2007 as well as an upgrade through data migration. An in-place upgrade is suitable for small environments where the existing setup of SharePoint 2007 already satisfies the infrastructural and software requirements for the upgrade. A more serious approach for the upgrade is to deploy SharePoint 2010 and then run the data migration/re-configuration process.Careful planning is required before performing a migration upgrade. Starting with satisfying the hardware and software requirements, the process goes on to selecting a suitable approach for the upgrade, proactively identifying and resolving any issues that may hinder the upgrade process, backing up content and configuration data, executing the actual migration process, re-configuration/upgrade of services and finally performing the post-upgrade verification checks.
Ribbon UIThe context sensitive ribbon interface is now integrated into the SharePoint 2010 user experience. Your applications can extend the ribbon interface to include new menu items and options both on a global level and based on the context of the user. -------------------------------------------------------------------SharePoint WorkspaceSharePoint workspaces — Provide direct bi-directional synchronization of library and list content between a SharePoint site and a workspace on an individual client computer. Creation of a SharePoint workspace enables individual SharePoint users to check out and check in SharePoint library documents from their local computers, bring SharePoint documents and lists to their computers where they can work online or offline, and synchronize local content with a SharePoint site. When an individual client establishes a connection with a SharePoint server, synchronization occurs at regular intervals when the client is online. When a client cannot connect to a SharePoint site, the user can easily take work offline to make updates. The updated documents are automatically synchronized with SharePoint document libraries and lists when the user reconnects. This interface offers an efficient and satisfying alternative to browser access of SharePoint. Unlike other workspace types, the SharePoint workspace is a personal synchronized copy of a SharePoint site.-------------------------------------------------------------------SharePoint Mobile-------------------------------------------------------------------Office Client and Office Web App IntegrationWhen Office apps are installed on the server then their services will automatically be added in the sharepoint services list and also added the features and on activation of each feature will use that functionality with sharepoint 2010.-------------------------------------------------------------------Standards SupportIt is compatible with following supportIE 9, 8, 7 Firefox 3x, Safari 3xIE 6 is not supported platform for SharePoint 2010-------------------------------------------------------------------RatingsNot available in sharepoint foundation 2010. just need to run the service from central administration "User Profile Service Application - Social Rating Synchronization Job"Enable ratings from the list and then it will added two columns A Rating column (this is a new Content Type) and a Number column to hold the number or ratings-------------------------------------------------------------------Tagging, Tag Cloud, Ratings-------------------------------------------------------------------Social BookmarkingTagging external sites, used in my sites where you colleagues will see your activites in activity feeds.-------------------------------------------------------------------Blogs and WikisBlogs are good for just posting information Wiki are better suited for collaboration or documentation which can be changed most oftenly.Wiki’s allow for many authors and can have some great advantages over blogs overall-------------------------------------------------------------------My SitesHaving the information of user, their collegues, their personal profile information.-------------------------------------------------------------------Activity Feedstracking capabilities within sharepoint.ATOM 2.0 based RSS feeds.two type of activities1- Activities from others users,2- User's own activities.-------------------------------------------------------------------Profiles and Expertise-------------------------------------------------------------------Org BrowserThe organization browser is interactive, in that you can navigate up and down the hierarchy, as well as, left to right to see the colleagues that share your manager-------------------------------------------------------------------Enterprise Content Typesold moss does not share content types acros site collectionswhere as in the MOSS you can enable this through activating the content type hub feature in sharepoint 2010.-------------------------------------------------------------------Metadata and Navigationthis is new feature in sharepoint you can filter your documents from the list or libraries based on the metadata information.-------------------------------------------------------------------Document SetsDocument sets are components, similar to folders, that enable users to collaborate on related documents without having to create a new document library or siteFor example, Microsoft has included a ‘Download set’ feature which compresses all the files in a set into a single zip file for download-------------------------------------------------------------------Multi-stage Dispositionnew document management features, apply policies on the documents and if you would have several steps then you have to write custom workflows, here in this stage concept is out of the box, and can create multiple stages and define rules policies accordingly. multi-stage lifecycle policy for both documents and records-------------------------------------------------------------------Audio and Video Content TypesCreated the Assets Library in SharePoint 2010WMA & MP3 (ISO/MPEG Layer-3), and for video files the format is WMV, other file extensions will get warning in this case-------------------------------------------------------------------Remote Blob Storageremotly store your content on sql server but has some file size limit of 2 gb.-------------------------------------------------------------------List EnhancementsImprovements include lists relationships, large list support, field or list item validation, xslt rendering, and using InfoPath forms as the list form.
