- The idea of the new home stay project was introduced to us at Ban Talay Nok We saw the opportunity to be a positive influence on the sustainability of the project We came up with a set of ideas and projects we thought would be helpful from our own experiences.
- Built two years after the tsunami with Lions Club international as the doner. Developed 100 identical homes and Thai people from all around the Koh Phrathong island and mainland settled here. Most of the original Pad Chok villagers had already moved to the mainland where the present village leader is at.
- We had a handful of basic questions about the home stay program and then asked a few personal questions that arose with the conversation We also participated in various community and created a database with information about the homestay families

- Most of them participated because they wanted to build unity amongst the community Most of the villagers welcomed outside organizations because they worked and engaged the villagers on a personal level; they were there for a very long time (Naucrates been there for 13 years-established early relationships)
- The signs will help visitors know where the home stay houses are and who lives there, and the different services they provide like Thai massage or dessert making. We took pictures of the families to be placed on the poster
- The villagers really appreciated our certificates and proudly displayed them. Someone said they would frame theirs and someone else was more happy about the certificate than the actual prize.
- People came to the garden activity who usually didn’t participate in village meetings and home stay, which gives us hope for the future of the village. This may be because it was more for the whole village rather than just for the home stay participants.

- Based on our interviews, we ranked the priorities of the villagers. Water issues and finding a community leader were amongst the top two issues the villagers wanted to address. This diagram helped us determine which areas the community focuses on for the 5 dimensions of sustainability
- 5 Dimensions of Sustainability Human School importance of environmental education/ political turmoil has caused issues with just getting a teacher. Since the presence of MAP and Naucrates have spread ideas of sustainability of natural resources and increased the awareness of the value of natural resources/ things that they took for granted earlier Cultural knowledge and things they want to share like cooking, language Social Lack of community connection because of diverse people backgrounds; there is a little bit of tension between the people who participate and those who do not (Por was telling us that some of the people who participate get annoyed that the same people participate) They feel that its difficult to mobilize the community because they don’t have the authority. They are many natural leaders but they are afraid to take full ownership because of outside pressures (mafia, political issues, cultural conflicts) Lack of headman (Phuu Yai) of the village who lives and participates with them Financial Beginnings of the community fund (5% of the homestay fund and things that are associated with the homestay); cbt partly supported by the lions club; homestay second income; shop owners benefit; boost of local economy (thai massage, boat driver, tour guides, handicrafts); most of the livelihood supported by squid fishing Side note: with the influx of money, we suspect a higher demand for goods (i.e. necessity – electricity all day, better water system) Physical Water - two wells, originally built one that produces visibly silty and yellowish brown water; homestay they always have to buy water for the guests; the water sustainability during the dry season with homestay visitors need to be investigated; another well down the beach with all the pipes but no water pump but needs permission and its been idle for one year Energy – Lion’s club didn’t provide them with any source of energy so they bought their own generator and every ~5 houses shares a generator; energy is on between 6-10:30pm; someone people have supplementary energy (i.e. solar panel); wind mill energy with no connection supposed to be for the school Buildings/Roads – recently built a concrete road (better for the rainy season); thankful for homes but the conditions of the house are terrible (leeky roof, not practical for lifestyle and climate, small, too close together, no land ownership, can’t request to use the neighbors house for their use [recycling, storing squid cages]; lack a proper dock (issue with low and high tides) Waste Management – septic tanks that hasn’t been cleared out every since they started 2-3years ago; no proper waste management for trash; recycling taken to the mainland but others are burn/bury and there is no proper burn/bury site; they have a compost bins; MAP/NAUCRATES gave all the homestay compost bins Nature Naturally occurring assets used for tours (Mangroves; Seagrass); Nippon palms; shell collecting; sea turtle conservation; Make sure that they don’t exploit their resources; restored mangroves aka soldiers; soil is sandy and cannot not grow many plants and vegetables, used coconut husks for planting; natural hornbill population; savannah-convert it to a national park; waterfall; overall all the condition of the nature is healthy because it sustains the local people for now…
