New Cal Rec Sports website
Business Challenge:
We came to understand from carefully monitoring Google analytics
that most visitors to our site wanted something very simple: to buy a
membership or to check a schedule. In an attempt to showcase our
many offerings, The Rec Sports web site had ballooned to a point
where it was getting difficult to find the information that most people
were looking for.
Solution:
Design a new website with usability in mind. With the new design,
members can quickly find what they need.
The result is happier customers, better access to program information
and a quicker less complicated way to do business. These are critical
factors for an auxiliary unit that is self-reliant.

Cal Adventures
Outside Magazine Online: August 14, 2012
In an Outside Magazine Online article ranking UCB as #1 among
Universities for outside activity, Avital Andrews raves about the
variety of programs and getaways that UC Berkeley and the
surrounding area offers. Besides the natural setting that UC Berkeley
is located on, it has access to the San Francisco Bay for a variety of
water activities including kayaking and windsurfing. The San Francisco
Bay Area also offers one of the beautiful areas in the world for
outdoor recreation.
Andrews say, “The outdoor-rec department is very high-caliber with
an excellent catalog offering everything from rock-climbing and
rappelling clinics to wilderness-medicine classes. Among the field trips
offered are backpacking in Big Sur and Lassen, and a kayak trip to
Point Reyes.”

BAS Excellence in Management Award
Patti Baba
The Award:
Patti supported her staff through the long process of change by
keeping them informed of the constantly changing details of plans,
listening to their needs and concerns and then working with them to
come up with solutions they could live with. Her leadership is built on
mutual trust and respect.
Profile:
A Cal graduate herself (1978), Patti’s first job was here as a part of the
undergraduate admissions office. Currently, she is the Associate
Director for Youth and Outdoor Programs.
She’s not the only member of her family to be a part of Cal either: her
husband Arty is a Cal alum, and her kids, Kyle and Scott, both attend
and work for UC Berkeley. Kyle, a senior, is a manager for the
Women’s volleyball team, and Scott, a freshman, works at the RSF.
Together, Patti and her family have volunteered at 10 consecutive
Caltopia events.
Patti is an avid racquetball player and spends most lunch hours
dominating the courts at the RSF. When she’s not working or working
out, Patti and the family can be found supporting the Cal football,
