objectives / objektif We will be cover: what is goal and goal setting characteristics of goals how to break down goals where goal setting can go wrong
leaders …   The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Stephen R Covey (2004) “#2 Begin with the End in Mind” The HP Way, David Packard (2005) “We thought if we could get everyone to agree on what our objectives were and to understand what we were trying to so, then we could turn them loose and they would move in a common direction.“ …This is Goal Setting…
goal setting ,[object Object]
Goal Setting Theory: A theory that focuses on identifying the types of goals that are most effective in producing high levels of motivation and performance and why goals have these effects.
Goal setting can operate to enhance both intrinsic motivation (in the absence of any extrinsic rewards) and extrinsic motivation (when workers are given extrinsic rewards for achieving their goals).,[object Object]
why goal setting important? They help us visualize what is important, plan actions, and then a way to carry them out. They help us make decisions. THEY MAKE US REPONSIBLE FOR OUR OWN LIVES – both success and failure. …………you tell me more..?
define goals-priorities Specific Measurable results Attainable Realistic Target for completion and…. I will tell you more latter…
types of goals Long-term Short-term
what is long term and short term-goal Long Term These goals are the “big picture” Short Term “Stepping stones” to Long Term examples Getting assignments finished Joining a ‘personal safety and self defense’ program Getting a driving license
goals should be... Self-chosen You are much more likely to achieve a goal that you set for yourself than one that has been set for you
goals should be... Moderately difficult A goal that is too hard or too easy will decrease your motivation and won’t show you what you’re really capable of accomplishing. Use what you’ve accomplished in the past as a guide
goals should be... Measurable You’re more likely to keep up if you can see progress toward your goal. For example, getting an “A” on your midterm is measurable progress toward getting an “A” in the class.
goals should be... Realistic Winning a marathon after two weeks of training is an unrealistic goal. Use what you’ve accomplished in the past to set a reasonable goal for the future.
goals should be... Specific Getting an “A” in Math and a “B” in Geography is much more specific than just saying that you would like to get good grades this semester
goals should be... Positive Say what you do want to accomplish instead of what you don’t want to do. “I will attend all classes,” is much better than “I won’t skip any classes.”
goals should be... Flexible If it looks like you can’t reach your original goal, be flexible and redraw your plan
goals should be... Associated with a deadline When do you plan on accomplishing this goal, in a month, day, or year?
goals should be... Written down It will serve as a better reminder to keep you motivated
where goal setting can go wrong When goal setting is disorganized For example, keep personal and academic goals separate
where goal setting can go wrong When goals are unrealistic For example, becoming a company CEO immediately after graduation is an unrealistic goal
where goal setting can go wrong Goals that are ‘beyond’ your control For example, winning the lottery is definitely beyond your control
where goal setting can go wrong When goals are vague For example, “becoming successful” or “becoming a better student” are not clear goals to work toward.
where goal setting can go wrong When you set too many goals At any one time you should focus on achieving only three or four goals
how to break down and achieve goals Refer to the ‘trainer’s document’ goal setting-trainer and participant.doc Leading Change on Individual-Trainer and Participant.doc
summary Goals with certain characteristics will enable you to be more successful in goal setting and achievement. Breaking down large goals into parts will help you to see what steps you will need to complete on the way to accomplishing your goal

develop your goal exercise: for workshop participant Take a moment and think about something you want to accomplish in the next 6 months. Can be personal, work, school, whatever domain is salient. Make it YOUR goal, something that REALLY matters to you. Write it down “Frame” it in the following ways: Reasonably difficult- some chance of failure Approach vs. avoidance (something to do; not something to avoid) Clearly measurable Clearly noting what success looks like (specific, time bound)

Take a moment and think about what will prevent you from accomplishing the goal. These are obstacles. Write down 3-5 of these obstacles. Write down what you will do to overcome the obstacles Write down who you can have hold you accountable and share this plan with them. exercise: for internet user/public
