Results of weekly water quality monitoring in Maryland's Severn River in the summer of 2013. Dissolved oxygen depth profiles are shown for 13 stations, with accompanying pycnocline intensity changes and results of hydrogen sulfide measurements. Our data show that two anoxic "dead zones" form at the bottom of the tidal Severn River during the summer, independent of the well known seasonal Chesapeake dead zone.

Soil moisture data are useful, but they can’t tell us everything. Other strategies for growers, like plant and weather monitoring, can inform irrigation scheduling decisions. In this 30-minute webinar, Dr. Gaylon Campbell will explore options for managing irrigation beyond soil moisture. Learn the why and how of scheduling irrigation using plant or atmospheric measurements. Understand canopy temperature and its role in detecting water stress of crops. Plus, discover when plant water information is necessary and which measurement(s) to use. Here’s what we’ll cover: • Estimating crop water use with reference evapotranspiration (ET) • Relationships between plant water potential and water stress • Options for scheduling deficit or controlled stress irrigation • Water stress and canopy conductance from canopy temperature

The costs of constructing a pipeline are highly dependant on the relative occurrence of consolidated (rock) and unconsolidated (soil) material in the top three metres of ground. Where rock occurs in the upper 3 metres, it has to be blasted which is far more expensive than trenching through surficial soils. Helicopter electromagnetic (HEM) surveys are used to map the electrical and magnetic properties as an aid to characterizing ground conditions in advance of pipeline construction. An accurate determination of ground conditions can reduce the planning risk considerably.

The application of solid-state fabricated carbon nanotube sheets as thermoacoustic projectors is extended from air to underwater applications, thereby providing surprising results. While the acoustic generation efficiency of a liquid immersed nanotube sheet is profoundly degraded by nanotube wetting, the hydrophobicity of the nanotube sheets in water results in an air envelope about the nanotubes that increases pressure generation efficiency a hundred-fold over that obtained by immersion in wetting alcohols. Due to nonresonant sound generation, the emission spectrum of a liquid-immersed nanotube sheet varies smoothly over a wide frequency range, 1-105 Hz. The sound projection efficiency of nanotube sheets substantially exceeds that of much heavier and thicker ferroelectric acoustic projectors in the important region below about 4 kHz, and this performance advantage increases with decreasing frequency. While increasing thickness by stacking sheets eventually degrades performance due to decreased ability to rapidly transform thermal energy to acoustic pulses, use of tandem stacking of separated nanotube sheets (that are addressed with phase delay) eliminates this problem. Encapsulating the nanotube sheet projectors in argon provided attractive performance at needed low frequencies, as well as a realized energy conversion efficiency in air of 0.2%, which can be enhanced by increasing the modulation of temperature.

Abstract:- Measuring the spontaneous/self potential of the ground at different points in a line to now the subsurface structure. This helps us to show the high potential and low potential points of the ground, actually these are the elevation and steep areas of the subsurface structure.basically, these points together forms in the shape of the countor map of the area which shows the characteristics of the subsurface. This experiment is carried out by the voltmeter.

Pressure in Geophysics is mostly explained in terms of hydrostatics. It is a three dimensional stress state in which the magnitude of stress is the same in all directions. The pressure of a fluid is said to be “abnormal pressure” if it is greater or lower than normal. Normal pressure is regarded as the rate of increase of formation density where the pore pressure remains hydrostatic. The determination of zones of abnormal pressure was done using geophysical well log method in the Eleme area. Sonic log and density log formed the porosity log and consequently the porosity data. The logs were interpreted and plotted against depth. The trends were analysed for wells and abnormal pressure. Overpressure was determined in between particular depths. For the two wells used, it is found between 2185m and 2785m for well A and 1805m to 2525m for well B. Abnornally high pressure zones have density of formation greater than 1.07kg/cm 3 . They also have pressure gradients exceeding hydrostatic pressure gradients of 0.433psi/ft to 0.435psi/ft for fresh and brackish water with less than 20000ppm of salt and 0.465psi/ft for salt water with about 80000ppm salt content. The determined abnormal pressure can be taken as a guide in the Eleme area of Nigeria when oil wells are to be dr illed
