1. What kind of media institution
might distribute your media
product and why?
2. Bauer
• Bauer is a multinational media company headquartered in
Hamburg, Germany which operates in 16 countries
worldwide.
Since the company was founded in 1875, it has been privately
owned and under management by the Bauer family. It was
formerly called Heinrich Bauer Verlag KG, abbreviated to HBV
and usually shortened to H. Bauer.
Worldwide circulation of Bauer Media Group's magazine titles
amounts to 38 million magazines a week kerrang! is a brand
that specialises in Rock Music. It originally began as a
magazine and in 2004 Kerrang Radio was launched. A Kerrang
TV channel also exists and as of 2005, all of its programme
content is music videos, the majority of which is open
scheduled, for text requests from their playlist.
3. IPC MEDIA
IPC is a consumer magazine and digital publisher in the united
kingdom, with a large portfolio selling over 350 million copies
each year. Many brands include NME, LOOK and NOW. With
more that 60 iconic media brands, IPC creates content for
multiple platforms, across print, online, mobile, tablets and
events. As the UK’s leading consumer magazine publisher they
engage with 26m UK adults- almost two thirds of UK women and
42% of UK men.
4. Q Magazine
• Q started out as a music magazine which was published
monthly in united kingdom. Founders mark Ellen and David
Hepworth felt the music press of the time ignored generation
of older music buyers who were buying CDs – then still a new
technology from artists such as Paul Simon, modelled after
rolling stone. Q was published in 1986, setting itself apart
from much of the other music press with monthly production
and higher standards of photography and printing, with an
emphasis of style.
5. NME Magazine
New musical express, popularly known by the acronym
NME, created by Theodore Ingham, is a UK weekly pop/rock
music journalism publication published since march 1952. It
was the first British paper to include a singles chart, in 14
November 1952 edition. In the 1970s it became the best selling
British music magazine.
NME is the longest published and most respected music weekly
in the world. Every week it gives its readers the most
exciting, most authoritative coverage of the very best in new
music, including award-winning features, the latest
releases, live reviews, the definitive guide to the best new
bands in its Radar section, as well as a regular look back
through the magazine's incredible 60 year heritage
6. E-map International Limited:
(EMAP)
• EMAP (now known as top right group) is a
British media company, specialising in the
production of business to business magazines
and the organisation to business evens and
conferences.
• This media group is quite smaller than others
so maybe this would be the best to distribute
my magazine.
7. MPA
MPA – The Association of Magazine Media is the industry association for
multi-platform magazine companies. Established in 1919, MPA represents
175 domestic magazine media companies with more than 900 titles,
approximately 30 international companies and more than 100 associate
members.
IMAG is the voice of independent magazine media publishers within the MPA.
With smaller staffs and more limited resources, independent magazine media
publishers have a lot to gain from tapping into the wealth of expertise and
information that MPA membership provides. MPA has created programming
specifically with the IMAG group in mind, including the Independent
Magazine Media Conference, free monthly webinars on various business
topics and regional meetings. The IMAG group is known for open, peer-topeer exchanges that help independents build connections and
community. Today, much of the excitement, experimentation and innovation
in the magazine media industry come from independent publishers.
8. Which one would create my magazine
and why?
•
•
I think that the best distributer for my magazine would be
a smaller independent group, for example Vice. Vice is an
international magazine focused on arts, culture and new
topics. Founded in 1994 in Canada in later years the
company expanded into VICE Media, with divisions
including the magazine, a website , a film production
company, a record label and a publishing imprint. Vice
Music, founded in 2002, has released albums and singles
by artists including snoop lion and growing up!
I think that this will be the best company to distribute my
indie magazine, because of one of their brands ID
magazine. After looking at ID magazine it’s a very similar
magazine in the genre I wanted mine to look like and
come across. Vice might not be the smallest group but I
think my magazine would fit well with this group as it
suits the genre and their audience is mainly females
which is similar to mine.
9. Id Magazine
• I-D magazine is a lifestyle magazine and prides itself on its highly
sophisticated editorial content and photgraphy. The magazine is based
mainly around fashion for the young professional as well as covering
music, film and other upmarket features.
• i-D was founded by director and former vogue art director Terry Jones in
1980. The first issue was published in the form of a hand stapled fanzine
with text produced on a typewriter. Over the years the magazine evolved
into a mature glossy but it has kept street style and youth central to every
issue.
There front image normally includes a female to attract the magazine to its
particular audience, similar with my magazine the facial expression is
important as it’s the first thing the public sees aswell as what they are
wearing aswell.
