TOUCHMARK AT MT. BACHELOR VILLAGE
Touchmark’s 10th anniversary celebration had
residents donning festive Caribbean attire and
soaking up the afternoon sun. In attendance
were some of Touchmark’s first residents who
moved into the River Lodge and cottages. Party-
goers danced to a six-piece band and enjoyed
jerk chicken, pork, and other island food. The
celebration continued into the late afternoon as a
Congo line formed and snaked through the tables,
followed by The Summit Express Jazz Band.
Comments overheard throughout the day:
“I just love the band. They were having as much
fun as us.”
“Best food yet. The jerk chicken is wonderful.”
“Can’t believe I’ve lived here 10 years. It has gone
so quickly.”
“Such a fun event. Everyone had a great time.”

Eat less. Eat better.
Move more.
“Unhealthy diets and a lack of
physical activity in the US cause
more health loss than smoking,
alcohol, or drug use.”
– Ali Mokdad, PhD, director of
Middle Eastern Initiatives and
professor of Global Health
at the Institute for Health
Metrics and Evaluation
(IHME)
The United States has
made significant health
improvements over the last
two decades, including:
• Lower disease burden
rates since 1990 of nearly all
childhood conditions and
diseases
• Lower mortality rates for
people at every age since 1990
• Significant reduction in death
and disability from HIV/AIDS
But Canada and other
countries in Europe and Asia
are improving at a faster rate.
Why is the US less healthy
than other countries?
The researchers point to
poor dietary practices and
inadequate physical activity
as two of the driving forces. In
fact, dietary risks moved ahead
of smoking as the leading
cause of disability and death
in the study released recently
in the American Journal of
Medicine.
Christopher Murray, MD,
DPhil, is a professor of Global
Health at the University of
Washington and director of
the IHME. He presented the
findings of the study at an
event hosted by First Lady
Michelle Obama as part of her
Let’s Move! campaign.
Bad choices and risky
behaviors fall in the
category of “lifestyle-related
risk factors”. Genetics
are important but not
as important as lifestyle
practices. Touchmark
recognizes the importance
of providing healthy lifestyle
options in its 11 communities
in the US and Canada.
