Alcatel-Lucent Touchatag overview presentation by Toon Coppens at the Mobilkom A1 Innovation days in Vienna, Austria, 26-27 September 2009.
It covers the basics of RFID and NFC (Near Field Communication) and goes into detail of what the touchatag service enables for consumers, application developers and business users.
Touchatag, an Alcatel-Lucent Venture provides:

Touchatag’s NFC – RFID service enables the long tail of contactless applications: For consumers: Low cost RFID starter package with 1 RFID reader (HF RFID, at 13.56MHz) and 10 tags Website with templates to easily link RFID tags (and 2D barcode) tags to various applications Application templates include web based applications, local applications (e.g. Skype, iTunes) and telecommunication applications (e.g. SMS, call) Tags configured via the web interface can also be read out via NFC phones For application developers: Provide the touchatag Software as a Service (SaaS) functionalities via a REST API to easily get started with RFID/NFC without needing the details on the technology Checkout the touchatag developer network on http://www.touchatag.com/developer For operators and enterprises: Contactless wallet 2.0, enabling them to provide contactless (RFID and NFC) based (mobile) payments Various applications (payment, loyalty, coupon services, interactive advertising) Stored Value Account Mobile wallet application
Focus of touchatag is on HF RFID, and NFC (Near Field Communication). Applications that can be enabled are human centric and distance to trigger applications is about 4 cm
Touchatag starter package, available worldwide via http://www.touchatag.com/e-store includes 1 USB RFID reader (ACS ACR122) and 10 UHF Mifare Ultralight RFID tags
Consumer applications are very broad: e.g. linking real world items to the online world
Via 2D barcodes and a scanning camera included in a phone, a barcode can be scanned and can initiate an application

The goal of the touchatag developer network is to make RFID application development as easy as creating a Facebook application This means that web developers are offered REST APIs to create applications without needing to invest in the basics of RFID, and that they can easily build further on applications developed by 3 rd parties
Touchatag architecture with a layered approach: RFID/NFC Reader and tag catalogue Application correlation service for the tag, app and reader management, with APIs for developers and web GUI for DIY users End to end solution for operators, enterprises using a stored value account, a mobile wallet and various payment and loyalty applications
Visage is a French project focused at providing a communication and information system for elderly and Alzheimer patients, using the touchatag service for easy access to the system.
Mobile workforce applications can be enabled via using NFC phones and the touchatag service. A nurse or doctor with an NFC phone can visit a patient, touch the RFID tag on the patient file and receive more up to date information while also submitting in real time the information to the dispatching about time of visit and location.
Touchatag in the summer of 2009 ran the Vienna Jungle Scrum contest, whereby people were invited to invent the best urban game using the touchatag service. Application developers could also upload their projects for the open NFC category
An urban game allows a team to use an NFC phone to touch tags (find them first). Questions needs to be answered and in this example it was the goal to capture enough tags to be able to capture the tag from the competitive team.

An NFC phone or a contactless sticker applied to a phone or a contactless card can be used for many applications, from payment to transport pass to accessing the enterprise building. On an NFC phone, a wallet interface allows to check balance and to select what application you want to have activated as tag on your phone
A typical wallet includes credit cards, debit cards, transit cards etc. These all can be integrated into a mobile wallet as well. In this case also a stored value account is added, which is a secure prepaid account that stores the amount of money, loyalty points, vouchers available to the account holder e-Money, prepaid mobile accounts, gift cards, transportation tickets, meal vouchers SVA owner is identified by MSISDN & unique Pin Code Does not require individual deposit in “real bank” “ One” deposit account in Bank Individual balance hold in SVA Bank has no knowledge of individual accounts balance or user activity
Wallet 2.0 is about an electronic wallet, replacing your traditional wallet but is also a lot more as it enables you to link the traditional functionalities of a mobile (communication, Internet, location based services) with wallet functionalities like payment, loyalty, coupon services etc. So you can imagine to be able to transfer loyalty points easily from one account to another. And off course you can also consult your wallet balance in real time.
To use an NFC phone as contactless wallet 2.0, a wallet application on the phone is needed, which needs to be downloaded. The SIM card inside the phone is upgraded along the “single wire protocol” specification, allowing the SIM to be used as secure element for e.g. payment. The SIM card gets divided in different zones, for different application providers (e.g. transport operator, loyalty program operator..). The management is the SIM card is done by the Secure Element Manager. (SEM). The management of an individual zone for an application provider is done by the Trusted Service Manager (TSM)
On the left bottom side, we see the traditional contactless world with about 2 Billion RFID cards in the market for access, transport and ticketing (e.g. Ski area, London Oyster card, Paris Navigo card), contactless payment cards (Mastercard Paypass, Visa Paywave). Some operators recently launched a branded Visa card, like Mobilkom A1 in Austria and O2 in the UK. This is typically done for churn reduction as you are more closely tied in with a bank than with an operator typically. We see an evolution towards an operator owned wallet and stored value account (like Belgacom PingPing) with contactless stickers on one side. Operators enabling 3 rd parties like Mastercard or Visa to use the NFC phone for a mobile payment. Typically an operator will not be part of the transaction scheme. In the case of NTT Docomo in Japan (right above), the operator manages the wallet and SVA on a phone (Felica phone, not NFC compliant) and is part of the payment loop.
The touchatag contactless wallet 2.0 solution includes: - Identity and Context Management leveraging NFC - Mobile client wallet and SVA Server - Open APIs for 3rd party apps
