In Tork UK's third installment of digital content, we discuss 10 Essential Considerations for Facilities Managers when sourcing hygiene facilities for the workplace.
Which hygiene facilities do you have in your workplace? What measures are you taking to ensure good hygiene in your workplace?
2. Hygiene and Facilities
“Good workplace
hygiene
• Equipping a workplace washroom with
hygienic and functional hand washing
facilities is crucial for keeping your staff
healthy.
• Dirty washrooms are among the top three
pet hates at work in the UK, France,
Germany, Sweden and Russia.
3. “Good workplace
hygiene
The facilities provided in a workplace washroom
play an important part in improving your
workplace hygiene standards.
So… which washroom facilities should you be
sourcing?
See our 10 Essential Considerations for
Facilities Managers…
4. “Good workplace
hygiene
Provide efficient as well as hygienic
hand washing and drying systems so
that staff are happy to remain in the
washrooms for as long as it takes to
wash and dry their hands thoroughly.
That said, always consider the
productivity levels of your employees!

Mild, pleasantly-perfumed soaps in an
easily accessible format can help to
promote hand washing. Liquid or foam
soaps - preferably housed in a dispenser
designed to prevent hand contact - will
ensure a speedy and hygienic hand
washing process.

Despite the fact that textiles are an
acceptable solution for hand drying at
home, it must be recognised that they
carry a much higher risk of cross-
contamination when used in the
workplace.
7. “Good workplace

The new-style jet air dryers can spread
contamination by a distance of at least
2 metres - which means that any
contamination could be blown over
any person in the washroom.
Furthermore, drying with the jet air
dryer results in an average bacteria
increase of 42% on the finger pads.

After using traditional warm air
dryers, bacteria levels increased by
an average of 194% on the finger
pads and 254% on the palms.

Paper towels reduce bacteria levels
by an average of 76% on the finger
pads and 77% on the palms. Where
paper disposables are provided, the
quality of the towels affects the
hygiene standards. For instance,
hand hygiene among hospital staff
improves when softer towels are
available.

The presence of door handles on the
outer door should be avoided in order to
prevent cross-contamination. Replace
traditional doors with a swing door or a
partition that shields the washroom
without actually closing it off.
14. “Good workplace
hygiene
The washroom is an integral part of the
workplace environment; always ensure that
it is a hygienic, pleasant and user-friendly
facility. This will increase productivity, raise
staff morale and more importantly, prevent
the spread of infection.
