“It is now clear that one of
the major goals that
education must add to its list
of purposes, is computer
literacy. The world of the
very near future requires that
all of us have some
understanding of the
processes and uses of
computers”

33 years ago, computer literacy were seen as important as seen in this quote from then Minister of Education in Ontario, Bette Stephenson
Most Boards had a culture of Fear and Caution when it came to technology in education
The fear was that the network would go down, or would be subject to viruses if it was not locked down
Most Boards filtered sites
Over the last 5 years we have moved away from this culture to one that focuses on curiosity and exploration and how technology can support learning, not block it.

We were denying our students the opportunity to learn
As a culture we didn’t believe that learning took place outside of the class
Prensky notes 4 key drivers of success
These drivers are different in today’s technology climate than in the past
Prensky coined the term digital native and digital immigrant, we had to explain to our teachers that our students as digital natives were not digital learners, they were good at socializing in an online environment but needed to be taught how to learn in a digital environment

This Canadian study helped to show that our students are not engaged at the high school level and we need to change what we are doing to keep them engaged if we wanted more of them to meet with success
Colleges are getting all of our students, and not 100% were engaged scholars
The culture we are creating is a need to change teacher practice to increase engagement and this will result in increased achievement
Our new environment
Our new environment
WiFi impact is significant and is now expected by all employees and students
Social learning is part of life and is not banned from education
Examples of how the culture change impacted all areas of our Board including the design of our new schools and the transition of our libraries
Example of a teaching building
Learning takes place outside of classrooms as well as in them – new school design includes teaching pods
Learning commons is an example of system transition that differs from site to site but focuses on the interactions of text and media
Move to Google Apps to focus on collaboration and cloud access and storage has had a major impact on collaboration and networking
No longer trying to scale innovation and replicate practices across 82 schools but instead we are trying to scale our networks so that they can innovate based on their unique challenges and needs
Ex. BlackBoard, D2L, Edmodo, Google Sites … all have been effective LMS in different situations across our Board

- Ministry Desire 2 Learn license, Moodle, BlackBoard
Game Based Learning
- acceptance of games
- development (TechUme)
- Grade 12 careers
- Digital Literacy
- redefining literacy and media literacy
- Responsible coduct and digital citizenship
Blended Learning
- no shortage of resources
- personalized learning
- focus on assessment loop and impact of technology to provide verbal and audio feedback
This instructional strategy may work for some students – but, does it engage all learners?
Across Canada there have been complaints of the math instruction and International Pisa results
Challenges still exist even with new teaching environments, example of math
Personalized learning – different resources, differentiated tasks and differentiated assessment
Competency based – slow in Ontario – how do we eliminate the grade based system and groupings of students based on an arbitrary cohort date of birth?
Move to video based instruction and multimedia and multimodal, and not just text
As students leave our HS environment, they need to ensure smooth transitions in terms of instructional practice and access to digital resources
