In the social sciences, the term government refers to the particular group of people, the administrative bureaucracy, who control a state at a given time, and
the manner in which their governing organizations are structured. That is, governments are the means through which state power is employed. States are
served by a continuous succession of different governments.
Each successive government is composed of a specialized and privileged body of individuals, who monopolized political decision-making, and are separated
by status and organization from the population as a whole. Their function is to enforce existing laws, legislate new ones, and arbitrate conflicts via their
monopoly on violence. In some societies, this group is often a self-perpetuating or hereditary class. In other societies, such as democracies, the politica
roles remain, but there is a frequent turnover of the people actually filling the positions.

Benefits to Adding Audio to Lessons
21. Videos are available all over the internet and can be perfect for
instructional use. Many of the sites, however, may have content
that is distracting and can be deemed as inappropriate. So, we can
extract the videos from the internet and add them into our
environment within SMART notebook.
There are numerous resources for videos - Learn360 and
YouTube are just a few of the larger video sources that we
can use.
22. Learn 360 keeps 3 versions of
each video so users can
always stream them if there
are hardware and/or software
limitations on your computer.
For SMARTboard use, select
the option for Flash.
When you select flash, look
below the video for a download
button.
In some cases, the download button may be
absent. In those cases, you can add links to your
SMART notebook presentations.
23. YouTube can fill in the blanks left by Learn
360. However, YouTube can also provide
hours of unnecessary, classroom distractions.
To extract the video from the website and put
it into our controlled notebook environment,
we need to copy the URL for the desired
YouTube video. We then take this URL and
paste it into the URL field of various websites
around the internet. The most popular are
Paste
keepvid.com, savevideo.me, and
downloadtube.org.
24. Best quality FLV
You'll be left with numerous choices, after hitting download. We are looking for
flash content, so download the best quality flv file available. To save the file,
right-click on the button that says >>Download FLV<< and choose "Save File
As".
You can then drag-and-drop your file or select Insert > Flash Video File >
Your Downloaded File
www.savevideo.me is a similar
alternative to
www.keepvid.com
Please give credit to the original video location by adding the URL location underneath the
video and/or creating a link.
25. DownloadTube.org provides a nice
alternative, by letting you choose which
format you'd like before you select download.
It also allows you to grab an audio only
version!

27. You have 8 balls;7 of them weigh the same, and one of them weighs slightly more.
How can you find the ball that is heavier by using a balance and only two
weighings?
28. Four people need to cross a rickety rope bridge to get back to their camp at night…
Unfortunately, they only have one flashlight and it only has enough light left for seventeen
minutes. The bridge is too dangerous to cross without a flashlight, and it's only strong enough to
support two people at any given time. Each of the campers walks at a different speed. One can
cross the bridge in 1 minute, another in 2 minutes, the third in 5 minutes, and the slow poke
takes 10 minutes to cross. How do the campers make it across in 17 minutes?
