Light Pollution. This is light we produce shining up to space. Why does this matter?
So here’s our bad light again. Replace it, or better yet, retrofit it…
So here’s our bad light again. Replace it, or better yet, retrofit it…
With a shade that comes all the way down to the bottom of the bulb, and the only light that come sout, goes to where it is needed. And better yet, get a shade with a reflective inner surface, and all the light that used to go to waste, now goes to useful purposes. The result, is that you get more light where you need it. In fact, since you now get more light than you originally have, you can replace your bulb with a lower wattage and thus save electicity, which saves energy, which saves you money. It is a win, win, win, win.
First, let’s take a look at your typical outdoor light fixture. We want outdoor lighting to make us safe. The light shining upward above the horizon, isn’t doing anything. It’s all waste. The light that shines horizontally is light that usually shines right into our eyes, it’s glare, and really isn’t doing much to keep us safe (in fact it can even hide the presence of something bad). The rest, the light shining down, that’s the productive light.
Here’s a bad light.
Here are some examples.
