BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The earthquake and consequent tsunami that occurred in the Indian Ocean
region on Sunday 26 December 2004 left millions of people homeless and
isolated. Children are the most affected group in this tragedy mainly due to their
high proportion in the population of the affected countries. After nearly 2 years,
humanitarian aid has shifted their focus from relief to rebuilding. Reconstruction
of Tsunami affected areas will be a long process and thus the need to encourage
victims to persevere in restarting their lives is much needed.

Nanyang Technological University Muslim Society (NTUMS) will be sending a
team to Banda Aceh in June this year. This will be the first team to be sent by
NTUMS. NTUMS hopes to continue efforts led by the team YES AR last
December. Team YES AR aimed to aid in rebuilding of the children’s language
skills by conducting foundational English lessons as well as motivational activities
with them

1 PROJECT MISSION & DESCRIPTION
Main mission:
     a) Introduce interactive English lessons that can be sustained without
         external help.
             (Please refer to Appendix D)
     b) Conduct practical Mathematics and Science activities as a support to the
         English lessons.
             (Please refer to Appendix E)
     c) Set up an IQ corner for continuous learning for the orphanages in Fajar
         Hidayah.
     d) Set up bookshelves and study tables for the orphanages in Panti Raja
             (Please refer to Appendix F)

Our focus on this trip will be on Fajar Hidayah orphanage and the Panti Raja.
More specifically, the concentration lies in education for the Fajar Hidayah youths
and teachers and construction in Sigli. However, our trip is not meant to be linear
and we will expand our program in other aspects. For example, we will be having
a mini performance which will serve as recreation and cultural exchange for the
Acehnese. (Please refer to Appendix F). Also, we will still continue, and hopefully
expand, the efforts from the previous three trips. In addition, this trip hopes to
instill the necessary positive values to the Singapore youths via service-learning.

We have divided the objectives of the project into two parts, for two separate
groups of people:

1. For NTU Students
   a) To expand their scope of community involvement projects overseas.
   b) To instill bilateral ties with fellow Acehnese youths.
   c) To understand and appreciate Acehnese’ way of life and therefore reflect
       upon their own.
   d) To develop a positive exchange of skills and knowledge, and experience
       with the residents of Aceh.

2. For the Acehnese youths/children
   a) To expose the older youths with materials and skills that will help in their
       future means of living.
   b) To share with the younger children new means of recreation.
   c) To assist the teachers in Fajar Hidayah orphanage in organizing more
practical lessons and inculcate a sense of creativity amongst the children.
   d) To share fun ways of learning science and mathematics, beyond
       classroom borders.
   e) To offer Acehnese youths and the wider community an opportunity to get
to know Singaporeans’ way of life. (through cultural exchange events)
   f) To provide means to self-sustain English and Science programmes.

2 PROJECT NAME

                                                                     2006

                                  DARE to DREAM

We chose the word “Aspire” because it epitomizes our whole project, and what
we hope the children of Aceh will continuously do in life. Even with all that has
happened to them since the fateful killer wave, we wish to bring forward the
message that every one of us has the right to aspire towards our lifelong dreams.
It is important to start instilling this mindset in the younger generation so that they
will not be forever haunted by the past and instead, look forward towards a
brighter future.

Thus, the slogan to complement the project name is “Dare to Dream”, which is
precisely what we hope the children will do. Through the activities that we’re
planning for the youths, children, and also the whole community there possibly,
we hope to leave the place after 2 weeks with not just fond memories, but also
the satisfaction that we have done our utmost in helping the people of Aceh.

3 PROJECT DURATION
The team will spend two weeks in Aceh, departing Singapore on 18th June 2006
and returning home on 1st July 2006. Please refer to Appendix C for Project
Itinerary.

5 PROFILE OF ORGANIZING TEAM/ LOCAL ORGANIZATION

Profile of organizing team/local organization

Nanyang Technological University Muslim Society (NTUMS), Singapore –
NTUMS has always taken an active role in the local community. The projects that
we undertake spans over a year. Our main objective is to stimulate the
development of our members, in terms of leadership as well as being
knowledgeable and responsible Muslims living in the world. The activities we
have organised can be categorised into four main dimensions, namely:

1) Outreach- aimed to increase the awareness of Islam to our non-Muslim
population in NTU.
2) Training & Development- to provide our undergraduates with an opportunity to
develop their leadership and organizational abilities.
3) Sport & Recreational- to strengthen the bonds among members through
cultivating healthy lifestyle.
4) Welfare and Humanitarian- aimed to reach out to the needy in our community

Some activities that were organized recently are; Ikhtishaaf- Camp for Darul
Ihsan orphans, Project Aura- Camp for youth at risk and MS Challenge- a sports
event for members.

NTUMS Mission: To stimulate the development of individuals hence
creating an Islamic environment and awareness of Islam in NTU.

“To stimulate the development of individuals hence creating an
Islamic environment and awareness of Islam in NTU.”
                                           -6-
NTUMS being an undergraduate society, understands its role in motivating and
giving hope to those who are in need. NTUMS have led many educational camps
for children aged 6-15 years. We felt that the children were motivated and high-
spirited upon leaving the camps. Meanwhile, the undergraduates have learnt to
be compassionate and caring towards the less fortunate. With these
experiences, NTUMS hopes that they can extend its services beyond local
boundaries, namely, to the kids in Aceh.

6 PROFILE OF HOST ORGANIZATION
Banda Aceh – Fajar Hidayah serves not only as an educational centre, but as a
boarding school for orphans of the Tsunami in Pagar Air, Banda Aceh as well.
The institution’s aims include upgrading and expanding educational services to
the community in the formal education program for youths in the primary and
high school age category by constructing new school buildings with adequate
facility and efficient management. Realizing the imbalance of educational
demands in the present system, The Foundation developed an Islamic School
with integrated curriculum as an institution in building and progressing the up
coming generation.

Furthermore, in face of the challenges posed by globalization, it has become
imperative to participate more actively in building every aspect of life to create
religious, independent, creative generation, perceptive to global and
technological changes. Also, having already worked with Fajar Hidayah for two
previous projects, it would therefore be an apt choice for maintaining continuity in
the project, as well as an advantage for both Acehnese and Singaporean
participants alike.

7 PROFILE OF VOLUNTEERS
The team will comprise of 25 youths (undergraduates) from Nanyang
Technological University Muslim Society; aged 19 – 25.

Islamic environment and awareness of Islam in NTU.”
                                           -7-
Besides just gaining experience in doing community work abroad, we hope that
these youths will also benefit from and learn to appreciate the joy as well as
learning experience in working in such a diverse team. Please refer to
Appendices E for team structure and hierarchy.

The team will be led by Abu Sufyan Bin Bedin, 24, a third year undergraduate
majoring in Material Science and Engineering. Assisting him is Filzah Amalia, 20,
a first year Sociology student.

Abu Sufyan possesses an extensive experience in leading and organizing events
for young children such as Kem Pelangi in 2003, KemBara and Trailblazer in
2004 and Galactica and Ledang Quest in 2005. He also volunteered in helping
out many other youth development programs for troubled youths such as Project
Aura in 2005 and Money Wise program for young couples at Jurong West Family
Service center He is currently residing the Vice-President position in the NTUMS
as well as an active volunteer with the Mendaki and Darul Ihsan Orphanage
Homes.

Filzah Amalia has had experience as a volunteer with various organization for the
past couple of years. She is a passionate volunteer who strives to go the extra
mile to help children in need. Her passion for volunteering and conducting
community services drives her to be part of Darul Ihsan Orphanage volunteers
and currently taking a step further to co-lead the group for this project. Filzah is
also an active member of NTUMS as a publicity sub-com.

Under the leadership of Abu Sufyan and Filzah, twenty-three dedicated NTU
students will join them in the pursuit of continuing the relief efforts in Aceh. At the
same time, we hope to gain new experience from this overseas expedition.

   2. To gather information with regards to Acehnese lifestyle and customs.
   3. To have a first hand experience on the effects of Tsunami on Aceh.
   4. To gather information on areas that NTUMS can contribute

Main Areas of Interests:

   1) Education
   2) Improve living and learning conditions
   3) Cultural Exchange/Recreation

Description:

We were hosted by Mr Hamzah, from Global Impact, a non-profitable
organization, whom will also be our project consultant, Miss Kartini, a Singapore
International Foundation staff working in Aceh and Fajar Hidayah’s staff and
teachers.

Our selection of these areas- Fajar Hidayah Orphanage, Taman Kanak-
Kanak(TK) and Panti Raja (Sigli) is decided based on our aim to continue the
redevelopment projects accomplished previously.

Our proposed programs are crafted to
   1) Increase social awareness amongst the Acehnese children
   2) Fuel the passion characteristic of the Acehnese community
   3) Develop essential basic communication skills to equip them for contact
      with the larger society.

Some of the activities fulfilled during the trip were meetings with the principal and
teachers of Fajar Hidayah and TK and the in-charge (and assistants) of Panti
Raja, time for interaction with the children and feedback from volunteers currently
stationed there.
And here are the issues of concern we gathered:

   1) Cultural Exchange/Recreation
         • Singapore Day (as requested by host)

Islamic environment and awareness of Islam in NTU.”
                                           -9-
Sports Day, group-based activities for example- mini “Amazing Race”
           •
           and tele-matches.
         • Handicrafts
         • Life Skills
   2) Improve living and learning conditions
         • Repair pipes, create hand-pumps for wells
         • Re-painting dorms
         • Making proper sign boards.
         • Multi-purpose court (as a channel for communal integration)
         • Book shelves, clothes lines.
         • Improvement for Kitchen (panti Raja)
         • Computers
         • Refurbishing pantries
   3) Education
         • Science day
         • To teach English through active learning- for instance: letter-writing
system, labels for objects and motivation signs to be provided.
         • Mini IQ corner
         • Hygiene and practical life skills- like trimming hair, entrepreneurship
           and scouts like activities.
         • Develop leadership skills- for instance-assigning group leaders when
           playing games

It appears that there are many activities, ideas and background information
collected during the trip that could be useful for our team to achieve our
objectives. It is the responsibility of the committee to carefully select, modify and
decide upon which activities to carry out so that we can maximize the quality of
our project. Also, to facilitate our team members to better appreciate the
experience, a short tour around Aceh could be useful to let them be immersed in
the environment. Below are some of the pictures taken during the trip for a better
view of condition in Aceh.

  • 3. BACKGROUND INFORMATION The earthquake and consequent tsunami that occurred in the Indian Ocean region on Sunday 26 December 2004 left millions of people homeless and isolated. Children are the most affected group in this tragedy mainly due to their high proportion in the population of the affected countries. After nearly 2 years, humanitarian aid has shifted their focus from relief to rebuilding. Reconstruction of Tsunami affected areas will be a long process and thus the need to encourage victims to persevere in restarting their lives is much needed. Nanyang Technological University Muslim Society (NTUMS) will be sending a team to Banda Aceh in June this year. This will be the first team to be sent by NTUMS. NTUMS hopes to continue efforts led by the team YES AR last December. Team YES AR aimed to aid in rebuilding of the children’s language skills by conducting foundational English lessons as well as motivational activities with them 1 PROJECT MISSION & DESCRIPTION Main mission: a) Introduce interactive English lessons that can be sustained without external help. (Please refer to Appendix D) b) Conduct practical Mathematics and Science activities as a support to the English lessons. (Please refer to Appendix E) c) Set up an IQ corner for continuous learning for the orphanages in Fajar Hidayah. d) Set up bookshelves and study tables for the orphanages in Panti Raja (Please refer to Appendix F) ____________________________________________________________________________________________ “To stimulate the development of individuals hence creating an Islamic environment and awareness of Islam in NTU.” -3-
  • 4. Our focus on this trip will be on Fajar Hidayah orphanage and the Panti Raja. More specifically, the concentration lies in education for the Fajar Hidayah youths and teachers and construction in Sigli. However, our trip is not meant to be linear and we will expand our program in other aspects. For example, we will be having a mini performance which will serve as recreation and cultural exchange for the Acehnese. (Please refer to Appendix F). Also, we will still continue, and hopefully expand, the efforts from the previous three trips. In addition, this trip hopes to instill the necessary positive values to the Singapore youths via service-learning. We have divided the objectives of the project into two parts, for two separate groups of people: 1. For NTU Students a) To expand their scope of community involvement projects overseas. b) To instill bilateral ties with fellow Acehnese youths. c) To understand and appreciate Acehnese’ way of life and therefore reflect upon their own. d) To develop a positive exchange of skills and knowledge, and experience with the residents of Aceh. 2. For the Acehnese youths/children a) To expose the older youths with materials and skills that will help in their future means of living. b) To share with the younger children new means of recreation. c) To assist the teachers in Fajar Hidayah orphanage in organizing more practical lessons and inculcate a sense of creativity amongst the children. d) To share fun ways of learning science and mathematics, beyond classroom borders. e) To offer Acehnese youths and the wider community an opportunity to get to know Singaporeans’ way of life. (through cultural exchange events) f) To provide means to self-sustain English and Science programmes. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ “To stimulate the development of individuals hence creating an Islamic environment and awareness of Islam in NTU.” -4-
  • 5. 2 PROJECT NAME 2006 DARE to DREAM We chose the word “Aspire” because it epitomizes our whole project, and what we hope the children of Aceh will continuously do in life. Even with all that has happened to them since the fateful killer wave, we wish to bring forward the message that every one of us has the right to aspire towards our lifelong dreams. It is important to start instilling this mindset in the younger generation so that they will not be forever haunted by the past and instead, look forward towards a brighter future. Thus, the slogan to complement the project name is “Dare to Dream”, which is precisely what we hope the children will do. Through the activities that we’re planning for the youths, children, and also the whole community there possibly, we hope to leave the place after 2 weeks with not just fond memories, but also the satisfaction that we have done our utmost in helping the people of Aceh. 3 PROJECT DURATION The team will spend two weeks in Aceh, departing Singapore on 18th June 2006 and returning home on 1st July 2006. Please refer to Appendix C for Project Itinerary. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ “To stimulate the development of individuals hence creating an Islamic environment and awareness of Islam in NTU.” -5-
  • 6. 4 PROJECT LOCATION Although the emphasis of the project will be in Banda Aceh (18th June– 26th June), the team will also travel to Panti Raja Orphanages located at Sigli (27th June– 1st July) for community service. 5 PROFILE OF ORGANIZING TEAM/ LOCAL ORGANIZATION Profile of organizing team/local organization Nanyang Technological University Muslim Society (NTUMS), Singapore – NTUMS has always taken an active role in the local community. The projects that we undertake spans over a year. Our main objective is to stimulate the development of our members, in terms of leadership as well as being knowledgeable and responsible Muslims living in the world. The activities we have organised can be categorised into four main dimensions, namely: 1) Outreach- aimed to increase the awareness of Islam to our non-Muslim population in NTU. 2) Training & Development- to provide our undergraduates with an opportunity to develop their leadership and organizational abilities. 3) Sport & Recreational- to strengthen the bonds among members through cultivating healthy lifestyle. 4) Welfare and Humanitarian- aimed to reach out to the needy in our community Some activities that were organized recently are; Ikhtishaaf- Camp for Darul Ihsan orphans, Project Aura- Camp for youth at risk and MS Challenge- a sports event for members. NTUMS Mission: To stimulate the development of individuals hence creating an Islamic environment and awareness of Islam in NTU. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ “To stimulate the development of individuals hence creating an Islamic environment and awareness of Islam in NTU.” -6-
  • 7. NTUMS being an undergraduate society, understands its role in motivating and giving hope to those who are in need. NTUMS have led many educational camps for children aged 6-15 years. We felt that the children were motivated and high- spirited upon leaving the camps. Meanwhile, the undergraduates have learnt to be compassionate and caring towards the less fortunate. With these experiences, NTUMS hopes that they can extend its services beyond local boundaries, namely, to the kids in Aceh. 6 PROFILE OF HOST ORGANIZATION Banda Aceh – Fajar Hidayah serves not only as an educational centre, but as a boarding school for orphans of the Tsunami in Pagar Air, Banda Aceh as well. The institution’s aims include upgrading and expanding educational services to the community in the formal education program for youths in the primary and high school age category by constructing new school buildings with adequate facility and efficient management. Realizing the imbalance of educational demands in the present system, The Foundation developed an Islamic School with integrated curriculum as an institution in building and progressing the up coming generation. Furthermore, in face of the challenges posed by globalization, it has become imperative to participate more actively in building every aspect of life to create religious, independent, creative generation, perceptive to global and technological changes. Also, having already worked with Fajar Hidayah for two previous projects, it would therefore be an apt choice for maintaining continuity in the project, as well as an advantage for both Acehnese and Singaporean participants alike. 7 PROFILE OF VOLUNTEERS The team will comprise of 25 youths (undergraduates) from Nanyang Technological University Muslim Society; aged 19 – 25. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ “To stimulate the development of individuals hence creating an Islamic environment and awareness of Islam in NTU.” -7-
  • 8. Besides just gaining experience in doing community work abroad, we hope that these youths will also benefit from and learn to appreciate the joy as well as learning experience in working in such a diverse team. Please refer to Appendices E for team structure and hierarchy. The team will be led by Abu Sufyan Bin Bedin, 24, a third year undergraduate majoring in Material Science and Engineering. Assisting him is Filzah Amalia, 20, a first year Sociology student. Abu Sufyan possesses an extensive experience in leading and organizing events for young children such as Kem Pelangi in 2003, KemBara and Trailblazer in 2004 and Galactica and Ledang Quest in 2005. He also volunteered in helping out many other youth development programs for troubled youths such as Project Aura in 2005 and Money Wise program for young couples at Jurong West Family Service center He is currently residing the Vice-President position in the NTUMS as well as an active volunteer with the Mendaki and Darul Ihsan Orphanage Homes. Filzah Amalia has had experience as a volunteer with various organization for the past couple of years. She is a passionate volunteer who strives to go the extra mile to help children in need. Her passion for volunteering and conducting community services drives her to be part of Darul Ihsan Orphanage volunteers and currently taking a step further to co-lead the group for this project. Filzah is also an active member of NTUMS as a publicity sub-com. Under the leadership of Abu Sufyan and Filzah, twenty-three dedicated NTU students will join them in the pursuit of continuing the relief efforts in Aceh. At the same time, we hope to gain new experience from this overseas expedition. • 9. APPENDIX A: Summary of Recce Trip (17th- 19th February 2006) Recce Team Members: 1. Abu Sufyan Bin Bedin 2. Filzah Amalia Bte Rahmat 3. Juni Liyana Bte Amin Objective: 1. To gather more information on areas in Aceh. 2. To gather information with regards to Acehnese lifestyle and customs. 3. To have a first hand experience on the effects of Tsunami on Aceh. 4. To gather information on areas that NTUMS can contribute Main Areas of Interests: 1) Education 2) Improve living and learning conditions 3) Cultural Exchange/Recreation Description: We were hosted by Mr Hamzah, from Global Impact, a non-profitable organization, whom will also be our project consultant, Miss Kartini, a Singapore International Foundation staff working in Aceh and Fajar Hidayah’s staff and teachers. Our selection of these areas- Fajar Hidayah Orphanage, Taman Kanak- Kanak(TK) and Panti Raja (Sigli) is decided based on our aim to continue the redevelopment projects accomplished previously. Our proposed programs are crafted to 1) Increase social awareness amongst the Acehnese children 2) Fuel the passion characteristic of the Acehnese community 3) Develop essential basic communication skills to equip them for contact with the larger society. Some of the activities fulfilled during the trip were meetings with the principal and teachers of Fajar Hidayah and TK and the in-charge (and assistants) of Panti Raja, time for interaction with the children and feedback from volunteers currently stationed there. And here are the issues of concern we gathered: 1) Cultural Exchange/Recreation • Singapore Day (as requested by host) ____________________________________________________________________________________________ “To stimulate the development of individuals hence creating an Islamic environment and awareness of Islam in NTU.” -9-
  • 10. Sports Day, group-based activities for example- mini “Amazing Race” • and tele-matches. • Handicrafts • Life Skills 2) Improve living and learning conditions • Repair pipes, create hand-pumps for wells • Re-painting dorms • Making proper sign boards. • Multi-purpose court (as a channel for communal integration) • Book shelves, clothes lines. • Improvement for Kitchen (panti Raja) • Computers • Refurbishing pantries 3) Education • Science day • To teach English through active learning- for instance: letter-writing system, labels for objects and motivation signs to be provided. • Mini IQ corner • Hygiene and practical life skills- like trimming hair, entrepreneurship and scouts like activities. • Develop leadership skills- for instance-assigning group leaders when playing games It appears that there are many activities, ideas and background information collected during the trip that could be useful for our team to achieve our objectives. It is the responsibility of the committee to carefully select, modify and decide upon which activities to carry out so that we can maximize the quality of our project. Also, to facilitate our team members to better appreciate the experience, a short tour around Aceh could be useful to let them be immersed in the environment. Below are some of the pictures taken during the trip for a better view of condition in Aceh.
