This paper describes tolog, a query language for topic maps inspired by Prolog and very similar to Datalog. The language is based on binding variables by matching predicates against the topic map being queried, and contains predicates for querying any aspect of the Topic Maps Data Model (TMDM), and also has support for user-defined predicates. SQL-like features like aggregate functions, projection, ordering, and result set paging. The paper introduces a formal model for topic maps, called Q, and uses this to formally define the semantics of tolog. The built-in predicates are defined, as is the syntax, and some notes on optimization and implementation are provided.

This paper investigates the possibilities for post-processing results of association rule mining algorithms with topic maps. Converting discovered association rules (DARs) as well as background knowledge to a topic map representation allows to assess the interestingness of discovered rules automatically with a topic map query language. This paper introduces a DAR ontology based on the GUHA method, a background knowledge ontology and a way of linking these two ontologies. It is shown on an example how these topic map ontologies can be used to represent particular mining data and how the tolog query language can be used to automatically find interesting rules in such a representation.

The idSpace project focuses on researching and developing a platform for distributed collaborative product innovation and aims at solving a number of shortcomings present in the currently available alternatives. Topic maps is an important factor in solving a number of issues, such as sharing concepts, reusing ideas and knowledge and creating an integrated ontology that ties all the aspects of a creative process together. It provides the project with means to help the user establish a fruitfull collaboration with other teammembers working in different locations.

The use of Topic Maps could be extended to most of the research fields that work with information and in which the semantics is a main component. This paper presents the implementation of this tool for Philological analysis, applied to the example of theatrical productions. Throughout the paper we can see the use of the Topic Map concepts within the construction of each element (schema, populating, layers, etc.). This being the first approach to this matter applied in humanities, it is relevant the achievements related to the semantic of the texts, which is not only maintained, but it is essential for this subject of study. The results of these procedures can be measured in a quantitative level, but also, and more significant in a mix between philological approaches and semantic studies. This is all because of the internal construction of the Topic Map and the different visualizations created from it.

Means for the exchange of Topic Maps are crucial for their further development of Topic Maps as industry integration standard. All existing approaches base on shared vocabularies. We clarify the term "absence of shared vocabularies" in the context of Topic Map Exchange. Afterwards we introduce the existing approaches for Topic Map Exchange and emphasise their limitations in the absence of shared vocabularies. Afterwards the SIM Approach is introduced and discussed. The SIM Approach allows the exchange of Topic Maps in the absence of shared vocabularies.

Nowadays semantic networks become more important in industry and modern science. For this reason there is a need for an efficient tool allowing preparation and navigation through complex data spaces. We present the novel Topic Map tool H-Maps, which offers a web based navigator providing an enhanced utilization and graphical visualization of semantic networks. Present applications transform existing content to subject-centric Topic Map representations in a one-way fashion. Preserving the advantage of transferring diverse back ends into a unified topic map in existing applications the H-Maps approach goes one step further. The resulting topic map structure can be examined and extended with an iterative procedure. Especially in science this procedure is leading to a considerable improvement of flexibility and performance as can be shown within projects of computational biology.

When developing topic maps and their applications, key challenges are how to pick up the main subjects in targeted domains and how to systematize those subjects. This paper introduces a topic map development about topic map case examples. It also introduces what kinds of subjects were extracted and how the identifiers of those subjects were given and how those subjects were classified in the first version. Then the difficulties which were emerged during the development are discussed. In order to promote sharing of the case examples and make good use of them, I provide some consideration and future works.

Topic Maps (TM) standard has solved a lot of problems in the information overload. With a semantic layer on the top of the existing data pools, TMs provide user-specific information interpretation and organization. However, one important component is missing in the TM standard and usage. This paper introduces SocioTM model; an extension of TM paradigm that includes relevancies, collaboration, and socio-knowledge (user-specific knowledge/behaviors) within TMs. The paper goes through relevancies implementation in SocioTM, relevancies building and population in SocioTM, relevancies interpretation, presentation, and navigation through SocioTM. Relevancies are presented on two levels: topic/ontology level and information (occurrences) level. The paper concludes with collaboration involvement in SocioTM building and with migration of socio-knowledge.

We propose a framework for ranking information based on quality, relevance and importance, and argue that a socio-semantic contextual approach that extends topicality can lead to increased value of information retrieval systems. We use Topic Maps to implement our framework, and discuss procedures for calculating the resource ranking. A fuzzy neural network approach is envisioned to complement the process of manual metadata creation.

Title: Guerilla IT with Pharo Piotr Palacz Email: piotr@palacz.net Abstract: 'Guerilla' is used here as a label for a situation with very limited resources, very short delivery timeframes, imprecise requirements in flux, in a context of a huge project with its own set of challenges. The presentation is a reflection about the choices that contributed to the project's success. One of the central factors was, arguably, something counter-intuitive: an insistence of maintaining traceability (among requirements and implementations artifacts) and constructing the solution in a way that supported it through design and implementation, using e.g. embedded DSL, some of the OO patterns, and suitable naming conventions. In the industry, traceability, in general, is not popular - despite occasional declarations to the contrary. Historically and as far as I can tell, the term is not even a part of the Smalltalk culture - hence the potential interest for showing that guerilla IT can be waged in an orderly way. Bio: My first contact with Smalltalk was around '87 - I took a Smalltalk course at school, using Digitalk/V. I worked with Smalltalk full time between 1990 and 2002 or so, in Australia and in the US, mostly in enterprise-level applications and systems. After several years of working with big companies and big systems in the US as Technical/Solution/Application/Lead/etc Architect, I went independent and consequently had the opportunity to use Smalltalk (Pharo specifically) on three different projects over the last 3+ years. The experiences that led to the presentation arose, first, from a technical audit of a large project, and then, from assuming responsibility for implementing some of the recommendations in that audit.

In order to cope with large-scale topic maps that store a lot of information, it is necessary to utilize topic map databases. Although, database management systems should provide users with external schema functions such as views, topic map databases do not have such functions. In this paper, we propose a method of implementing a view function, by focusing on the fact that the substructure of topic maps can be regarded as a topic map. In order to realize the idea, we developed an access control system based on the view function. Through an experiment to measure the execution time, we confirmed that these functions work correctly and have little effect on the execution time.

This paper reports the efforts to make topic maps from Subject Headings (SHs) and discuss practical use of them for organizing information and knowledge. SHs are often maintained by libraries and used in bibliographic records. SHs are thesauri and they are well organized. Fortunately some SHs are published on the Web. We transformed them to topic maps. Usually each subject in SHs has own ID. It can play PSI role. By keeping the relationships included in SHs such as Broader-Narrower, Related, USE-UF etc in topic maps, information or knowledge can be linked together and organized according to the structure of SHs. In other words, by using SHs information and knowledge can be topic maps easily.

In connection with structuring and sharing of knowledge in a form of ontologies the question of their assets evaluation occurs. This short paper presents the methodology of asset evaluation of individual instances in ontology based on standard of Topic Maps. The evaluation comes out of weights assignment to instances and associations in ontology and total weight calculation for individual instance and its surroundings. Searching results can be ranked according to this total weight expressing information asset of individual instance.

The automatic generation of facets works fairly bad for fine-modeled ontologies, in which not all information concerning a single Topic is available through occurrences and direct associations. In this paper, we share our conception of using TMQL path expressions for the definition of domain-specific facets by means of using standard-based Topic Maps technologies. The generated facets must be evaluated, even though they are defined manually by a domain expert. We therefore propose metrics for automatic evaluation of the defined facets, as well as a mechanism for using automatically stored user feedback.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
