“Peers influence your life, even if you
don't realize it, just by spending time
with you. You learn from them, and
they learn from you. It's only human
nature to listen to and learn from
other people in your age group.”

“In my freshman year of high
school, I was involved in band.
We began practicing a month
before school started, so I had a
chance to meet new people. By
the time the first day of school
started, I found myself saying
“hi” to all the people I met
through band that summer.
Getting involved in my school
really helped me to make the
transition”

• 49. IN CONCLUSION... - Following all these steps and recommendations will lead to a fun and fullfilling high school career. - These steps apply to entering any new educational step as well.

Notas do Editor

1. When I was coming to high school, I had no idea what to expect. I was scared of many things. I think that my topic is perfect because it is helpful to others, and that is why it is important to me.
2. Movies such as Dazed and Confused and mean girls scared me when i was coming to high school. All the girls and boys were made to do these wild things and I always hoped high school would not be like that. This goes along with my personal relevance and why I think this was a good topic to go over. Hazing in Dazed and Confused- Mean Girls- the new girl coming to school has to do many things to fit in.
3. I chose this quote because I think it is perfect for the upcoming freshman because when they enter high school, they will need the courage to grow up and become who they are. That is what high school is all about.
4. When freshman enter the high school, the thoughts of anticipation and anxiety are going through there head. They may be anticipating what classes they have, what friends are going to be in those classes, and they might be nervous or worried about bullies or classes being harder.
5. This describes what the halls are actually like, students would be surprised to see how chaotic and noisy the hallways actually are, and how freshman year is the year to make all your first impressions for the next 4 years.
6. Let the people know why you don’t do drugs or drink, simply by just saying “No thanks, I don’t drink, I don’t believe it’s good for me” If your asked to do drugs, suggest an alternative Avoid parties where you know there will be drugs or alcohol Switch the subject, even by saying “No thanks, I don’t want to. Listen, let’s go check out the game” Real friends want what’s best for each other- and that does not include drugs or alcohol.
7. Since there are no legal consequences for smoking cigarettes, the habit is more common. 80% start before they turn 18. 4,000 teens smoke their first cigarette each day, and half of them will become regular smokers when they are adults.
8. People see other people smoking, and think it is acceptable and “cool.” when kids grow up around tobacco use, they think it’s okay and a lot of parents do not properly educate them about the dangers. Since it is easy to get the cigarettes, it’s an easy habit to satisfy.
9. Health risks such as, Cancers of the mouth or lungs, Yellow teeth, and the biggest problem is addiction. Most smokers think that addiction will never happen to them, but in reality, it is a hard habit to break.
10. This is explaining how peer pressure can be good or bad, and no matter what you will go through peer pressure either in a good or bad way, and whatever way that may be, you learn from it.
11. -Negative peer pressure is giving in to doing drugs, or underage drinking just because your friends are. -If enough kids get together, peers can pressure each other into doing what's right! -If peer pressure is continuing throughout your life, and you can’t handle, talk to someone you trust. -Talking to a parent, teacher, or school counselor can help you feel better and prepare you for the next time you face peer pressure
12. I won’t drink or do drugs. For example: I will go to a party if an adult Is present. I will look for friends who believe drug abuse and drinking are wrong.
13. Join a sports team, or positive clubs such as SADD. Your decisions to use positive friendship pressure are influencing at least one person-you. And that Is the best possible influence you can have. By accepting people for who they are, you can help relieve friendship pressure others face.
14. High school has something for everyone, sports, music, art, or after school clubs. You can meet a lot of new people by interacting and it might make your first year in high school a bit easier.
15. This is a quote from a real student in the book “High School Survival.” I chose to use this because it shows from real experience how important it is to get involved. By getting involved in any activity of some kind, you interact with people who share the same interests as you.
16. A high school student shouldn’t spend every waking moment after school studying, it’s an escape that is not only good for you, but is fun too.
17. It takes some time to adjust and learn the ins and outs of your classes. Be realistic about the expectations you give yourself, it’s your first year of high school, don’t expect yourself to know every little thing. Almost everyone takes a little while to adjust and get used to the new environment and work. Teachers are always there to help.
18. If you really learn the material, you will do well. If you’re uptight about getting an A, the pressure you put on yourself could interfere with your performance. Always try your best.
19. If you keep all of this up, and not let anything distract you, this should all come at ease. every class and pay close attention, Get enough sleep and breakfast, Ask for help, always do your homework, review regularly.
20. This graph shows that the more the student understands, the better grades they get. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if needed.
21. This is important to know because students think that homework is the most important thing, but if your never relaxing and taking time to ease off the stress, it will make everything much harder.
22. when teens do get a full night of quality sleep, past research has shown that their grades may even improve. Over the years the teenagers insufficient sleep has got worse, which led to PSSA’s this year to be later in the day, so the teens could sleep in.
23. Explaining how true it is that students who get more sleep, do better in school.
24. This has to do with all the different cultures, and whoever you are, you will fit in with somebody in high school. Look around, everyone is different.
25. Procrastination is a common problem in school, and also a problem that affects other areas of your life, such as chores or extra-curricular activities.
26. With some careful thought, you can manage the demands and still maintain your balance.
27. Don’t interact with people if you know they are a bad influence. Always use your time wisely with school work. Relax- Don’t put to much stress on yourself.
28. I think this is the most important tip to know coming to high school. You are meeting different kinds of people and learning which ones you like to spend time with and which ones you don’t. Enjoy these years of fun.
29. Never give up on your dreams, and always try your best. High School is One step closer to your dreams, and as you take all of your next steps through life it will eventually lead to your dreams.
30. All year, I videotaped certain activities all around the high school, and interviewed multiple people in different grades about coming to high school, what their thoughts and fears were, and what advice they would give the new freshman.
31. It took some time to actually go down to the middle school and interview the eighth graders, it was harder than i thought. I actually had to make my own permission slips, as you can see, for their parents to approve so I could interview them.
32. Print out an Upper Merion logo on paper, half the class will write a piece of advice, or words of wisdom to freshman, and the other half will use iphoto to take the picture. share with the class, Then frame all of them into one and dedicate it to the upcoming freshman.
33. In my research, if you follow all of the recommended steps to adapt to high school, Your high school career should be fun and fulfilling. Research also shows that these recommendations also apply to entering any new educational phase so we should all take this to heart as we graduate and take our next educational step.
