SOME OF Dr. Seuss’s BOOKS By Michael March 2008
Onomatopoeia Here are some onomatopoeia sentences I wrote modeled after the book. Mr. Brown can achoo like a sneeze. Can you? Mr. Brown can roar like a lion. Can you? Mr. Brown can raff raff like a fox. Can you? 3/14/08
We made clovers with Whoville on them. We made a book of ways to protect our Whoville like Horton. Keep Whoville Safe By Mommy, Nicholas, and Michael. No cat allowed! Watch where you step! No earthquakes! Keep it still. No playing. Remember to be careful. 3/15/08
INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 cups milk 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons white sugar 3/8 cup shortening 2 tablespoons active dry yeast 4 cups all-purpose flour 1 quart oil for frying 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon 6 tablespoons white sugar DIRECTIONS In small saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, salt, 2 tablespoons sugar and shortening. Heat until shortening melts and sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and let cool to lukewarm, 110 degrees F (43 degrees C). Sprinkle in yeast and let sit until foamy. Transfer mixture to large bowl, and stir in flour to make a dough. Knead until smooth, cover and let rise 30 minutes. In a large heavy skillet or deep fryer, heat 1 inch of oil to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Roll out 1 to 2 inch balls of dough into thin sheets. Fry sheets 1 to 2 minutes on a side, until puffed and golden. Drain on paper towels. Combine cinnamon and 6 tablespoons sugar. Sprinkle over warm pastries. Serve. We made elephant ears for cooking class. Recipe from http://www.homegrownhearts.com/HortonHearsAWho.htm Nicholas and I mixing dough. 3/15/08
We went to go see Horton Hears A Who, the movie. Afterwards, we ate at IHOP and had Who-Cakes.
Fox in Socks is a hard book to read because it has a lot of tongue twisters, rhymes, and alliteration (which is words that start with the same sound. Here is a tongue twister I wrote. The trash truck tried to trap the trout truck but tricycles transformed traffic tripping the main train. 3/16/08
The Butter Battle Book is a silly book because they fight about if they should butter on the top or on the bottom of bread. The Yooks and Zooks live on separate sides of a wall. The book ends with both about to drop a bomb, but I wrote a better ending. Here it is: “ If you drop yours, I’ll drop mine.” said the Zook. The Yook accidentally dropped his bomb and then the Zook dropped his, but nothing happened. Then they called a truce and today the Yooks and Zooks live in peace. THE BETTER ENDING 3/16/08
This a graph of contractions Dr. Seuss could have put in Green Eggs and Ham. 3/17/08
These are not real prices. I made the graph in Microsoft Excel 3/17/08
We made green eggs and ham and here is a story I wrote based on the book. “ I am Michael. Michael I am. I like green eggs and ham.” “ That Michael I am. Oh that Michael I am. I do not like green eggs and ham.” said Daddy. “ Would you eat them in the snow? Would you eat them with your toe?” asked Michael. “ I would not eat them in the snow or with my toe.” grumbled Daddy. “ Try them, try them and you will see you may like them just like me. Then I will let you be.” Michael told Daddy. “ Alright, I will try. YUCK! How this does suck!” shouted Daddy. 3/17/08
These are some pictures of us eating green eggs and ham. 3/17/08
Come Out and Play A story by Michael In this story I used only fifty words, just like Dr. Seuss did with Green Eggs and Ham. 3/18/08
I want to play all day in the snow, do you want to go? It is too cold to go out and play, no way! 3/18/08
I want to sled, we could sled on our head. I do not want to sled on my head, it is too cold to go out and play, no way! 3/18/08
My sled is red and it is as big as my bed. It is so big we could eat bread on my sled. I do not want to eat bread on your big red bed sled, it is too cold to go out and play, no way! 3/18/08
We could throw a snowball at the tall wall, and eat some ice that could be so nice. Cold is not nice, I do not want to eat ice and throw a snowball at the tall wall, it is too cold to go out and play, no way! 3/18/08
If you do not want to go out and play I could go in and play your way, OKAY! 3/18/08
This book was published after Dr. Seuss died with some help from Jack Prelutsky and Lane Smith, who were other writers. They put a lot of his original work in the book and added a lot because Dr. Seuss only started the book. Then he moved on to his last book: Oh The Places You’ll Go . I made up my own teacher for Diffendoofer School and the next slide will tell you about him. The next slide also has collage art like this book. 3/21/08
Mr. Driv teaches driving in the parking lot. He watches while he sits on his hot cot. We have to learn to park on a dot. 3/21/08
Here are antonyms I found in the book One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. Old New Sad Glad Thin Fat Here There Fast Slow High Low Yell Quiet 3/21/08
My mom and I made some oobleck. Nicholas and I got to play and experiment with it. Here are the results. List the properties of liquids and solids. Liquids: Soft and flowing. Takes the shape of the container it is in. Solids: Hard, does not flow, and holds its own shape. 1. Slowly poke your finger into it. What happens? My finger could go through it. 2. Quickly poke your finger into it. What happens ? It will not go into it as easy as it did slowly. The oobleck becomes a solid. 3. Roll it into a ball. It wouldn’t roll into a ball because it fell apart. 4. Tap it with a pencil. It turns hard on top but before it was soft on top. 5. Bounce it . It won’t bounce. 6. Place the following objects on it and write observations. Paperclip - sinks Penny - sinks Scrap of paper – floats String - floats 7. What does oobleck look like? Like thick green water. 8. What does it smell like? It smells yucky. 9. What does it feel like? Slimy and squishy. 10. What does it sound like? It didn’t make a lot of sounds. 11. What does it taste like? It tasted like flour. 12. Do you think it is a solid or a liquid? Why ? I think it is both because on top it is a liquid and on the bottom it is a solid. When I picked it up it started out as a solid, then turned into a liquid and ran down my fingers. 3/22/08
The Cat in the Hat is one of Dr. Seuss’s most famous books. Someone gave him a list of 225 beginner words for children to learn to read and he put them all in the cat in the hat. It was his first beginner book. After he wrote The Cat in the Hat, he started his beginner books series. 3/24/08
Through Dr. Seuss’s life he made a difference in the world by making reading fun for kids. He was born on March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Massachusetts. When he was in college he did ads and was a writer for the school newspaper, The Jack-O-Lantern. When he was older he started writing books. His first book was To Think I Saw It On Mulberry Street . After several more books he started writing beginner books. His first beginner book was The Cat In The Hat and then his big career started. He wrote forty-four books that have been published in twenty different languages. His favorite book was The Lorax because he wanted to save the environment. Through the years of writing he got many awards. Each time his birthday came he got thousands of cards from his fans. The Cold War was going on and he wanted to stop it which inspired him to write The Butter Battle Book , and his idea worked. People started to think it was silly. Then when he got older he had a heart attack from smoking and it almost killed him. He stopped smoking. He had cancer in his teeth which spread to his neck. He had to have a lot of operations to stay alive. On September 24, 1991, he died.
My Favorite Book and My Favorite Character My favorite book is Green Eggs and Ham Sam wants this guy to try green eggs and ham and he won’t. But at the end Sam said he will leave him alone if he tries them, so he does. He likes them. Favorite Character: Sam Describe what the character looks like: Yellow chest and arms. Red hat. White legs and head. Describe how the character behaves in the story: He wants this other person to try green eggs and ham. Describe your favorite scene: When the person tries them and likes them .

They put a lot of his original work in the book and added a lot because Dr. Seuss only started the book. Then he moved on to his last book: Oh The Places You’ll Go . I made up my own teacher for Diffendoofer School and the next slide will tell you about him. The next slide also has collage art like this book. 3/21/08
