This program gives us the opportunity to discover two amazing provinces in Argentina: Salta and Jujuy. We visit places with pre-Columbine history where the Spanish conquerors used to reign. We ride on Peruvian Paso horses, bred and trained by Ampascachi; they are versatile horses with very smooth gaits which makes this trail a unique experience. You first meet our horses in Chicoana, Salta, and with the guidance of our experienced trail guides, you choose the horse which best fits your riding experience. It will be your companion throughout your horse riding holidays in northern Argentina. We ride along the Quebrada de Humahuaca where the beauty of the exceptional landscapes amazes us.

Carolina Valdes HCOM 100 Mon/Wed 1-2:15/Toomey Title: The Culture of Alpaca Breeders Specific Purpose: To inform the audience about the culture of people who breed alpacas. Introduction Attention Material: Who can tell me what these are? (picture of alpacas) And who can tell me what purpose they serve? Well, I am hoping that after this presentation, You would be able to know all you need to know about the alpaca. Thesis Statement/Preview: Today I am going to talk about the culture of alpaca breeders. To better understand the culture, I will inform you about the history of alpacas and their breeders, how to maintain your alpaca, and the uses for alpacas. (First, let’s take a look at the lives of the alpaca and their breeders!) Body I. Alpacas and their breeders have a very distinct and interesting culture that not many people are aware of. A. The history of Alpacas starts off in the ancient Inca civilization. 1. Here they were vital to the Incan society in South America. 2. They weren’t imported to the United States until 1984. 3. They haven’t spread across the world at all. They have mostly stayed in South America. According to Northwest Alpaca traders, 99% of alpacas still live in Peru, Bolivia and Chile. 4. Alpacas come from the camelid family, along with the camel and llama. Alpacas resemble a small llama. B. There are two types of alpacas, the Suri and the Huacaya. 1. The only real difference between the two is their fur. 2. The Suri’s coat is longer and straighter, almost like dreadlocks. 3. The Huacaya has tightly bound curls, which makes their coat look fluffy. C. Here are some Basic facts about Alpacas 1. They are on average 36” tall to the withers. They measure to the wither, which is the ridge between their shoulder blades. 2. They generally weigh between 100 and 200 pounds. 3. The alpaca lifespan is 20 years. 4. They eat hay or grass, but they are also known to eat anything, such as paper or a bottle. 5. They spit. They make noises, like humming or a click, but when they are in a fight or they are frightened, they can make a high-pitched cry, but this is pretty rare. 6. If you are interested in buying one, it could cost anywhere from $100 to $500,000. D. Moving on, Alpaca breeders are just as important as Alpacas themselves. 1. Most people who breed alpacas use this as their only source of income, although many people also just enjoy them and do it for fun. Yet, it is a lot of work and is considered a full time job. 2. A lot of organizations around the world for Alpaca trainers and breeders. The biggest one is AOBA (Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association). They hold conferences, auctions, training sessions, and online blogs where you can post all sorts of cool information or stories about your own alpaca. Another one is AFCNA (the Alpaca Fiber Cooperative of North America. This organization accepts alpaca fur and turns it into products. 3. Use your thoughts about the essay, , and your own reflections on your current and past relationship with Nature 1- Describe your relationship with the natural world. Give some serious thought to what Nature means and has meant to your life. Reflect on these questions: 2 -Do you think of yourself more apart from or more a part of Nature? 3- How connected do you feel the non-human occupants (i.e., animals, plants, organisms big and small) of Earth,? 4- To what degree do you relate your existence to theirs? 5 -When you hear the word “wilderness,” what associations do you make or feelings does it provoke in your mind? 6 -Do you hold value in far-off, wild places even though you will likely never physically experience them? 7 - What value does Horse Lick Creek hold for Barbara Kingsolver? Do you have a natural place that provides a similar benefit to you? If not, do you still appreciate the value such a place could provide and why it is important to protect such places? -The daughter of a doctor who would accept home-grown vegetables from patients too poor to pay in cash, Kingsolver was born in Annapolis, Maryland, and grew up in Nicholas County, Kentucky, a rural area where most people earned a subsistence income by farming. She earned degrees in biology from DePauw University and the University of Arizona, and has worked as a freelance writer and author since 1985. This is the kind of April morning no other month can touch: a world tinted in watercolor pastels of redbud, dogtooth violet, and gentle rain. The trees are begin ning to shrug off winter; the dark, leggy maple woods are shot through with gleam ing constellations of white dogwood blossoms. The road winds through deep forest near Cumberland Falls, Kentucky, carrying us across the Cumberland Plateau toward Horse Lick Creek. Camille is quiet beside me in the front seat, until at last she sighs and says, with a child\'s poetic logic, “This reminds me of the place I always like to think about.” Me too, I tell her. It’s the exact truth. I grew up roaming wooded hollows like these, though they were more hemmed-in, keeping their secrets between the wide-open cattle pastures and tobacco fields of Nicholas County, Kentucky. My brother and sister and I would hoist cane fishing poles over our shoulders, as if we intended to make ourselves useful, and head out to spend a Saturday doing nothing of the kind. We haunted places we called the Crawdad Creek, the Downy Woods (for downy woodpeckers and also for milkweed fluff), and—thrillingly, because we’d once found big bones there—Dead Horse Draw. We caught crawfish with nothing but patience and our hands, boiled them, with wild onions over a campfire, and ate them and declared them the best food on earth. We collected banana-scented pawpaw fruits, and were tempted by fleshy, fawn-colored mushrooms but left those alone. We watched birds whose names we didn’t know build nests in trees whose names we generally did. We witnessed the unfurling of hickory an.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
