2. Oporto
The city of Oporto was founded by the Romans and has
been the main centre of the economic live of northern
Portugal since those times. Successive generations have
built of the steep hills that lead up from the Douro river.
This rich architectural history makes the city of Oporto one
of Europe’s most fascinating yet least discovered travel
locations.
3. A day in Oporto
The city of Oporto is divided by the river Douro as it makes its final few turns before joining the
Atlantic. The river in only 400 meters wide yet has provided a safe harbour that lead to the
development of a vibrant trading city.
The Yeatman is in the very heart of the historic Port lodges on the south side of the river. A visitor
can explore the old Port warehouses that welcome visitors and explain the famous fortified wine that
took the city’s name.
Both sides of the river have a vibrant café life that allow the visitor to relax and enjoy the dramatic
huddled vista of buildings that rise up form each bank.
A short walk over the famous double deck Dom Luis Bridge will bring you to the northern bank and
the UNESCO world heritage city. The streets lead up to the cathedral many so narrow that they are
not passable by cars.
Oporto is a city built in granite which is often carved in magnificent detail. The Cathedral is a fine
example of this as in dominates the historic part of the city. Indeed the city appears to be full of
churches, many with magnificent tile decorations on the outside. A short walk into the city from the
Cathedral will bring the visitor to the São Bento Station with arguably the finest tiles in the city.
Heading back towards the river one can climb the tower of the Clérigos church designed by Nicolau
Nasoni. The 220 steps to the top will bring the most unrivalled view of the city, views to create a
lasting impression.
A short distance away is the Palácio da Bolsa which gives an idea of the extraordinary wealth that was
created by the merchants of the town. Next to this a visitor could catch a tram to the district of Foz do
Douro and enjoy lunch on the beach over looking the Atlantic, or head for the Ribeira for fresh
grilled sardines and the chance to see where Henry the Navigator, Portugals’ most famous son, was
born and lived.
Heading back across the river to The Yeatman and the chance to relax in the gardens, swim in the
pool, enjoy the spa or simply watch the sunset from the bar. The sound of the church bells will mix
with the screech of seagulls and the sounds of the city reading itself for another evening of charming
entertainment.
4. A day in Douro Valley
Oporto is on the mouth of the river Douro, some 100 km downstream from
the vineyards of the Port Wine region. A visitor has a choice, take a boat
from the quay and a leisurely cruise up the river, enjoying the drama of the
landscape unfolding before your eyes.
Alternatively one could catch a train from São Bento station and travel on
the single track line that is considered one of the great train journey’s of the
world. The railway was built in the 1870’s and, as a result of the damming
of the river, is often only a few meters above the water line.
However, a car journey of only one and a half hours from The Yeatman will
place the visitor in the heart of the region; a region where you can enjoy a
visit to a vineyard or enjoy a relaxing meal on the banks of the river.
5. The Atlantic Coast
Below The Yeatman a visitor can take the purpose built
path that leads along the edge of the river to the Atlantic
coast seven kilometers away. This walk way passes
through the fishing village of Afurada. A little further
on it then heads south and provides access to all the
sandy beaches, bars and restaurants.
