Excited about getting your new multifunction printer delivered to the office? Might want to think ahead where you're going to put it, else there's going to be a lot of pushing and manoeuvering...and buckets of sweat!

2. Back in the 1980s I worked for a large
manufacturing company in the West Midlands
that had a huge office block.
It was two stories high and built sometime in
the early 1900s when everyone walked
everywhere and lifts were only installed in
posh hotels.
3. I worked upstairs and we’d just kitted out a room to hold a
photocopier that we’d ordered a few weeks earlier. Thing is,
we’d not seen the photocopier other than in a picture in a
magazine (before the Internet, too!)
The delivery man turned up one
Tuesday afternoon to install it and we
noticed it was on a pallet, it was huge.
The guy asked me “where’s your lift?”
Errr…
4. This thing was heavy. It took five of us a
good two hours to eventually manoeuvre
it around the staircase which, by the way,
went round a corner and into the office.
We plugged it in and in spite of all the kicking, jostling and
pushing, it worked first time.
5. We now work in an office where the photocopier and laser
printers can be carried around by one person with or without
the assistance of a lift so it was a bit of a surprise when I
recently visited a large manufacturer.
I was working there on some reporting task and I asked if I could
print off a presentation. I was attached to the Wi-Fi and told
which printer to install. I then found the physical device. It was
huge!
6. It was actually a multi-functional device, it
did pretty much everything you’d expect
a printer to do and much more.
It photocopied, faxed, printed (in colour),
archived and stapled. It was a publishing
house in a big, heavy square box.
7. When I returned I spoke to one of our suppliers and asked about
the way these things were going seeing as everything else was
miniaturised these days. It was quite interesting to hear that
even though technology does indeed miniaturise most things,
photocopiers are still available in some pretty huge form
factors and laser printers are the same.
And their main problem when delivering? Getting them up the
stairs!
