Drainage, Drainage, Drainage. Offset left to roundabout entry for high speed entry
On La Jolla Boulevard, pedestrians used to have 68 feet of pavement to across. With implementation of roundabouts, all pedestrians would cross only one lane or 14 feet of pavement at a time (one lane in each direction with 10 feet of median that serves as pedestrian refuge area). This would substantially reduce pedestrian exposure to traffic.
Right of Way restriction, certain movements of a WB-50 design vehicle cannot be accomodated. As the minimum design standard, the roundabouts can accommodate all turning movements of a SU-30 design vehicle, Single Unit Truck.
At 30% design the SU-30 could barely clear the acute angled left turns. Redesign on entry and exit width were necessary.
The followings are turning simulations of a semi-trailer truck, WB-50, with current design of roundabouts, and with the modified design of with a narrower circulatory roadway width. As the graphs show, a WB50 truck can barely clear obtuse angled left turns with current designs, and the truck will not be able to clear the obtuse angled left turns with the narrower entry width design.
