2. The Loire Valley
• Some of the most beautiful chateaux can be found in the Loire Valley.
• The Loire is the longest river in France and the Loire Valley is a fertile
area with beautiful landscapes.
3. What are Chateaux?
• A chateau is a large home or castle.
• They were built by French kings from the 10th to 17th centuries.
• They represented both royalty and nobility and were built as palaces and
courts for French kings.
• Many of them were destroyed during the French Revolution.
4. Château de Cheverny
• The Château de Cheverny is located 2 hours south-east of Paris in the
Loire Valley.
5. History
• The Château de Cheverny was built in the first part of the 17th century
under the direction of a well-known architect, master-mason and
sculptor, Jacques Bougier.
• Jacques Bougier also worked on a wing of the nearby Château de Blois.
• Bougier died before completing Cheverny. If fact, its main staircase is the
work of an unknown craftsman who left only his initials and a date on
the ground floor of the chateau: FL 1634.
6. History (cont.)
• The Cheverny's estate has belonged to the same family, the Huraults, for
over six centuries.
• Hergé, a Belgian comic book writer, used the Chateau de Cheverny as
an inspiration for Marlinspike Hall, which was the grand country
residence in the Tintin comics series.
7. Architecture
• The Chateau de Cheverny is a symmetrical structure made of stone from
Bourre, which is white and gets harder as it ages.
• The front of the chateau is done in the classical style of Louis XIII.
• It is perfectly preserved and looks exactly as it did in the 1600s when it
was built.
8. Architecture (cont.)
• The decor of the chateau includes elaborate carved woodwork, an
unrestored Gobelin tapestry, furniture from the eras of Louis XIV and XV,
and painted wall panels that show the story of Don Quixote
(Denise Hall, eHow.com).
