EXAMINING KYLIE Stephen Farr Kylie Minogue is an extraordinary woman. She’s beaten breast cancer, made shrewd business investments and even when her career has looked to be in the decline, she always comes back with a bang. Then, it is no surprise that the word ‘Kylie’ means ‘Boomerang’ in aborigine Australian, she always bounces back, no matter what life throws at her. On the verge of releasing her 11th studio album, Aphrodite, we take a look at the one and only Kylie! Television Early Years Kylie hasn’t always been a Pop Queen, in the 70’s, Dannii Minogue, her younger sister, was Australia’s Sweetheart, appearing regularly on the hip show, Young Talent Time. Kylie and Dannii both auditioned for the same role as a dutch girl in the WWII soap The Sullivans. It came as a surprise for Kylie to win the role. More minor opportunities arose, but none as big as the biggest soap in the UK and Australia, Neighbours, in 1986! When her character, Charlene Mitchell wed, over 22 million viewers in the UK tuned in to watch the soap wedding of the decade. A star was well and truly born. The Neighbours cast were asked to do a charity benifit at a Sydney football stadium, so the Neighbours band went along. When the audience demanded an encore, Kylie suggested they do The Locomotion, a track by Little Eva from 1962. The audience loved it and so she recorded it. The Singing Career The Locomotion was only released in Australia and became the highest selling single of the decade! Due to the overwhelming public demand, Kylie released a worldwide single, I Should Be So Lucky. Day by day, each territory was turning no.1 and became the highest selling single of the year in the UK, despite debuting at no.96, and then leaping to no.1 for 7 weeks. The next album Fever was led with the massive Cant Get You Out Of My Head, making Kylie no.1 in no less than 40 territories and even charted in the top 10 in the US, success Kylie had craved. Personal Life Kylie has always bounced back, be it from the death of ex-lover Michael Hutchence, declining popularity, or losing her boyfriends. However on 17th May 2005, Kylie faced her biggest challenge yet. Kylie Minogue announced that at the age of 36, she had been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Kylie was forced to postpone her sold out Showgirl: The Greatest Hits world tour. Kylie won a lot of support from her fans, and after a desperate plea, the paparazzi left her alone and gave her some privacy. During her illness Kylie wrote lyrics, a childrens book and worked on her new fragrance. In 2006 Kylie showed the world she was getting better when she appeared on stage with her sister Dannii at a rare club appearance. Kylie was back. Business Kylie Kylie is also a very successful business woman, with fragrances, home wear, clothing collections, calendars, books and more all released under the Minogue name. However in 1990, after 4 UK no.1’s, Kylie swapped her girl next door image for a more raunchy sexy one. Although Kylie was releasing better music, she tired of squeaky clean PWL and wanted more credibility as an artist. In 1992 she signed to hip dance label deConstruction, with her PWL greatest hits debuting at no.1. In 1998, sales were in the decline despite rave reviews, so after only charting at no.10 in the UK with the album

EXAMINING KYLIE Stephen Farr Companies such as Darenote and KayDeeBee, even when her career has been in the decline, her income has increased with a lot of her earnings in high profile investments and properties and millions earned from her Kylie Minogue Perfume's range, her Kylie at Home range and her Love Kylie Lingerie range to name a few. Films & Acting Kylie live on her 2009 North American tour. Despite a successful career, Kylie herself admits that she has made some cringe worthy films. To name a few, Street Fighter, Bio dome, Hay Ride To Hell, The Delinquents. The list goes on. However, Kylie has won respect in some films such as Moulin Rouge, Cut, Sample People and Blue. The less said about The Magic Roundabout, the better though! Kylie is one of the only people in the industry who has the ability to laugh at their career. She laughs at some of her acting. THE KYLIE TIMELINE Stephen Farr Kylie found early success in Aussie TV serials, but lived in Dannii’s shadow. Teaming up with Jason Donavon, Kylie made the big time in Neighbours. Kylie flew to London to work on a debut LP to follow up the hit no.1 Locomotion. Pete Waterman & co wrote I Should Be So Lucky in 40 minutes – it was no.1 for 5 weeks! The awards and accolades started flying in! Under the influence of Michael, Kylie swapper her girl next door image for a sexy one. When Kylie left PWL in 1992, she started experimenting with her music. It wasn’t a commercial success. Kylie teamed up with Aussie rock star Nick Cave in 1995. Pete Waterman criticised Kylie’s new indie style records. Kylie found love with bad boy rocker Michael Hutchence.

THE KYLIE TIMELINE Stephen Farr Kylie returned to the top spot in 2000 with Spinning Around, a return to her disco roots. Kylie dumped her control freak boyfriend, model James Gooding. Kylie launched her own lingerie firm, Love Kylie Lingerie. While Kylie was dating French film star, Oliver Martinez, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Kylie treated the cancer with chemotherapy and will have her 5 year all clear in 2011. Kylie has always had time for fans, as shown here at the Sexy Darling launch. A film was made called White Diamond about Kylie’s return to stage after cancer, An exhibition of her costumes travelled round the UK funded by the V&A museum. Kylie won her third Brit award in 2007 for international female. In 2010 Kylie became the only woman to have no.1 albums in 4 consecutive decades in the UK!

6/12/2010 Celebrity Interview Stephen Farr This issue singer, X Factor judge and all round poppet Cheryl Cole chats to us about Kylie, the media and her Girls Aloud band mates. Being the nation's sweetheart, do you feel that the media focuses on you too much?I do feel that sometimes the media focus too much on me, but its not always a bad thing. I don't mind when their focusing on an aspect of my life that isn't too personal. When they are going into detail about very personal things for everybody to see it does affect me. But I try not to read too much into what is being written. I don't read newspapers or magazines, the only way I know what is being written is when my PR phones me and gives me a small briefing about anything that they think I should know is being published. I don't read anything good or anything bad about myself. That way I stay grounded and don't get ahead of myself. Do you prefer performing solo or with Girls Aloud?I enjoy doing both really. It is sometimes a bit easier performing solo because it isn't as hectic when getting ready in the make-up rooms etc... When with Girls Aloud there's normally 5 of us pottering around a little room, when solo its just me in there. But I do miss the banter we have. Also, there is more pressure when your solo because if you make a mistake, its all on your shoulders, where as when your in the band, there's another 4 girls to back you up. So I can't really choose which I prefer. Do you find yourself weaker during any song's because of personal reasons?I am a very emotional person anyway, and I do usually, really listen to songs and take in their lyrics and try to give them a meaning. Ellie Goulding's - Your Biggest Mistake... That has a personal meaning for obvious reasons. “I Am A Very Emotional Person...”

I think that would have to be, snuggled up on the sofa in something comfy with a cup of tea, either some bisquits or a Curly Wurly, with my dogs, watching the soaps or a good light hearted film. How do you like to relax?Erm, I relax by either having a night in with my either my family, or some of my close friends and have a good laugh and let our hair down, or having a night in snuggled up with my dogs. “A Good Night In For Me?” With Dannii Minogue, did you feel that Simon Cowell made the wrong decision by considering to axe her?I don't think Simon would do that really... Not permanently anyway. I think if he ever considered it, it would have only been for this year. However I can tell you Dannii has signed a contract which means she will join in the later stages of boot camp/judges houses stages. However I don't know the ins and outs of their contract because that’s strictly between Simon and Dannii. Simon knows what he is doing and knows Dannii is excellent on the show and he would receive lots of negative press and backlash if he would have axed her. She is a brilliant and important part of the show. Do you think that fame has changed you in any way?Of course, fame has brought lots of positives money wise, but that is not why I do the job. I do my job because it is a passion of mine, I have always had a strong love for music whether it would be dancing or singing. So it has changed me by giving me the opportunity to have luxuries that I wouldn't have had before, however It hasn't changed me as a person at all. I am still just like anybody else when I'm at home. Kylie or GaGa?Erm, that's a tough one because I think they both have different sounds and styles of music and I enjoy both of them. I think I would probably say I prefer GaGa's music but I have a lot of respect for the both of them.

6/12/2010 Celebrity Interview Stephen Farr Would you rather jet off on a promo tour, or stay in with a box of chocolate's?I would have to say jet off on a promo tour, because there is nothing like the buzz you get from things like that, tours etc is what your in the job for and you don't do things like that whenever you feel like it, where as you can run to your shop on an ordinary evening and grab a box of chocolate's. Definitely the promo tour. Do you like Kylie Minogue?Of course I like Kylie Minogue, but I wouldn't say I know her on a personal level, but I admire the work she has done as do most women. She is an inspirational woman who has done a lot of hard work over the years. I have a lot of respect for Kylie. Do you get together with the rest of Girls Aloud a lot?Yes, Nicola, Kimberley, Sarah and I get together regularly, occasionally have a couple of glasses of wine when we do, Nadine is out in LA working on her solo music so we haven't seen much of her lately but she is still very much part of the band and we can't wait until she has done her music so we can get back together Would you rather snog or punch Simon Cowell?Erm, neither ha ha. I don't think it would be the wisest thing I'd ever have done if I was to punch him because I don't think I'd have my place on the X Factor for much longer if I did and he's a nice guy so I can't imagine punching him. Celebrity World James Whitefield Chris Brown Break’s Down Live On Stage! Chris Brown has reputedly broken down on stage during a tribute medley to Michael Jackson. CTV reports that Brown's face suddenly faded as he started singing Jackson's 'Man In The Mirror'. In a statement, Brown said: "Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired.“ Celebrity fans tweeted him support after the performance. SuBo At The Village Fete! Superstar Susan Boyle surprised fans when she turned up as the guest of honour at a local school fete. The singer, who rose to fame during last years series of Britain’s Got Talent attended the event at her Scottish hometown of West Lothian according to the Daily Record. Boyle was reportedly happy to sign autographs and pose for pictures, and later crowned the winner of the Gala Queen contest.A parent who attended the fete said: "Susan made the children's day. She's such a massive star now - we were all amazed she turned up." Nick Cave Awarded Honorary Degree Australian rock singer Nick Cave has been awarded an honorary degree from the University of Dundee for being a "visionary maker of songs, stories, books, films and poetry". Nick Cave, singer in group Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, best known for a 1995 duet with Kylie on Where The Wild Roses Grow said "Go out and fail spectacularly," later saying: "This is an absolute honour for me. My father was a teacher and my mother also worked in the school, so the family has a background in education. Fergie has reportedly revealed her intentions to leave band Black Eyed Peas. An insider has said that tensions within the band have started a rift between Fergie and Will.I.Am. The source, who spoke to Radar Online said: "Fergie is saying she wants out of the band and the second half of the tour isn't confirmed for early next year. Things have gotten really bad with will.i.am. And it's not just Fergie who is clashing with him. So is the rest of the band. His ego is out of control. Music: Kylie Track By Track Stephen Farr Quite frankly you wouldhave to be dead to not know Kylie’s new album Aphrodite is out 5th July, we’ve heard it first and have a track by track review on it! Yay!! Everything Is Beautiful ‘Beaut-iiiiiif-ulllll’ – A perfect intro to a beautiful track from the album. Probably the most ballad like track and definitely a favourite with infectious lyrics and a contagious beat! **** Too Much Aww, you feel like crying at the deep lyrics. It’ sad. You want to hug Kylie, despite not fitting in with the rest of the album, Too Much somehow works, and works well! **** All The Lovers A fantastic piece of dance, perhaps on par with Confide In Me, All The Lovers is both fast and slow paced and is a pure 100% Kylie song! **** Get Outta My Way Get Outta My Way is one of the albums stand out tracks and has already been confirmed as a single. In a word – Wow! With a futuristic beat, and pop Kylie back, this looks to be the anthem to carry us out of the summer and into autumn, definitely one of the best tracks on the album, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it! ***** Aphrodite Aphrodite is probably written about Kylie’s return to grace, with lyrics such as ‘Can You Fit Me On Stereo?’ and ‘I Was Gone And Now I’m Back, It’s A Truth, It’s A Fact’. What a beautiful track, which fits in with this Kylie era perfectly. ***** Cupid Boy Who could this be written about? Perhaps the most camp song on the album, Cupid Boy is the ‘OK, let’s hit the dance floor!’ track. It’s simplicity works. ***** Looking For An Angel Perhaps a more mature version of ‘Under The Influence of Love’, Looking for an Angel is the perfect fit for the album, exposing the mature Kylie and showing her candid side, which is very rare for one of her songs. **** Illusion Illusion slows things down a bit, before sound effects reminiscing Fever. Kylie slows down a bit, barely singing, more speaking. Perhaps this would have worked better on the Fever album? *** Put Your Hands Up Perhaps some of the deepest lyrics on the album? Starting up sounding as a ballad, Put Your Hands Up surprises you in the chorus with a full on disco beat! This track is a slow grower, but again a fantastic piece of pop for the album! **** Can’t Beat The Feeling Completely different from the Coca-Cola jingle from the 90’s, Can’t Beat The Feeling is the perfect closing song for Kylie’s best album in 13 years. And I mean that, both about the album and the song! ***** TOTAL – 50/55 – RATING: A+ Better Than Today Debuted live on Kylie’s North American tour, Better Than Today is fantastic track... but it sounds better live. Not much better though! I love it. It’s marvellous and more pure Kylie pop! Play it full blast out of your bedroom window to unleash it’s true potential!!! ***** Closer With an intro worthy of Star Wars, Closer is the most futuristic tracks on the album, though sadly in my opinion the weakest track on the Aphrodite album. **

Motoring Kyle Grounds Are You Ready For Monster Jam? Grave Digger was originally conceived in 1981 by Dennis Anderson as a mud bogger. This first truck was a red 1952 Ford pickup truck, which was later converted to a silver and blue 1951 Ford Panel Truck. The truck received its name when Anderson, amicably trash talking with his fellow racers, said the now famous line, "I'll take this old junk and dig you a grave with it", a reference to the age of his old pickup in comparison to their relatively modern trucks. Anderson gained a reputation for an all-or-nothing driving style and quickly became popular at local events. At one show, a scheduled monster truck failed to show up and Anderson, who already had large tractor tires on the truck, offered to crush cars in the absence of the full-size monster. The promoter accepted and Grave Digger was an instant success as a car crusher and led Anderson to leave mud bogging and pursue monster trucks instead. With a points championship now in place, Anderson moved to Grave Digger 2 in 1989, with a new 1950 Chevy panel van body. It was during this time that the reputation for wild passes was developed, and the popularity of the truck increased. TNT recognised his rising popularity and began promoting Grave Digger heavily, especially for races on the Tuff Trax syndicated television series. This was helped by Bigfoot not racing for points in the 1989 championship, leaving Grave Digger as the most popular truck on the tour. In late 1998, Anderson sold the Grave Digger team to Clear Channel Motor Sports (now Feld Entertainment Motor Sports). Anderson continues to drive and still is the most visible member of the team. Statistics Size An average Monster truck weighs about 10,000 to 12,000 pounds (4,500 to 5,400 kg). They are usually 11 ft (3.4 m) tall and 12 ft (3.7 m) wide.Speed Monster trucks were built for short bursts of speed and power. Engines average 2,000 horsepower (1,500 kW) that can be used for jumps and quick manoeuvring.Engines alone cost around $35,000. As I was visiting my Grandmother, as you do, my thoughts turned to how much she reminds me of Flo, the long suffering wife to Andy Capp. This may be partly due to her toiling with dangerous chemicals in a bid to clean her flag stones while her husband was curled up on the sofa watching the football, a beer in one hand and a betting slip in the other. When alerted of the perils his wife was facing he rushed out, not to help her, but to get himself a nice snack. Do you know of an Andy an Flo? If you do, then hit him! So just let me tell you something. You can’t sing or rap. You aren’t funny on anything except Gavin and Stacey. The funny parts on Gavin and Stacey clearly weren’t written by you and you can’t present things such as World Cup Live or the Glamour awards and you ruined the Doctor Who episode with your awful acting! 25g butterMethod 1. Heat the oven to 110C/gas 1/4, and place 4 plates in to warm. 2. Sift the flour, salt, sugar and baking powder into a mixing bowl. 3. In a jug, combine the milk, eggs, and melted butter. Pour the liquid into the dry ingredients and whisk together, without worrying too much about any remaining lumps. Keep the pancakes warm, on top of the plates in the oven while you finish making the whole batch. 7. Warm the maple syrup and butter in a small saucepan, or in the microwave oven.
