2. The condition of Keratosis Pilaris varies in size, name, body part and variation.
Why most KP sufferers tend to be women, there is one form of chicken skin that
primarily is found in men. In fact men are 4 more times more likely to contract the
condition than women.
Since that is the case it begs the question, is Stucco Keratosis, Keratosis Pilaris for
men? Sorry for the tongue twister, but that is the question on the table in this
discussion. It’s best to start out by defining what it actually is.
Stucco Keratosis are non-harmful growths of skin that are oddly shaped. They
typically affect the lower body parts. In older individuals, it usually manifest on
the ankles.
Surprisingly, many times Stucco Keratosis goes unrecognized, especially since
there are no symptoms; even when the condition is present.
As mentioned, men are 4 times more likely than women to be affected. Worst
yet, it only gets noticed once you reach the age of 40.
As a point to know, unlike KP the cause of Stucco Keratosis is unknown. There
have been studies linking it to HPV infection, but none conclusive. Also warts
have been associated with the condition as well.
Many who suffer with it have shown sun damaged skin, as is the case with Solar
Keratosis. So, if you are the age of 40 and are a male, here are 4 features of the
condition that will give you indication that you may have it.
1) Look out for gray, white, pink and yellow elevations on your skin
2) Any thickening of skin in the lower parts of your body
3) A kind of rippling appearance of your skin
4) Look out for a number of lesions that are usually small, but could be in
multiples (hundreds)
3. So what are the treatments, if you have Stucco Keratosis? Unfortunately
treatments are few, but I will point to 3 that have shown to be the most effective
so far.
1) You could scrape the area, but some minimal bleeding will occur
2) There is a drug called Etretinate that shows merit, it is usually used to
treat severe forms of Psoriasis
3) You could apply ice/cold pack or cryotherapy directly to the legions.
Typically treatment for sufferers is only cosmetic, because of the unusualness in
appearance of the lesions.
It is also important to note there is no full proof treatment, and your particular
body might not respond to the treatments outlined.
A doctor consultation may be helpful to determine the most effective course of
action. In conclusion, although Stucco Keratosis is not technically defined to men,
only the facts show they are the main recipients. So it is not a stretch for you to
conclude that it could be labeled as Keratosis for men.
