The zig story
The Zig truth is they create "ideas in their most powerful form." A strong statement that sums up what
they are about. It is the idea that counts, that one courageous and bold thought that captivates an
audience and calls them to action. It is the idea based on strong strategic thinking that can turn a
company into a partner, a possibility into a triumph. This is the cornerstone of the Zig philosophy and
the binding principle that they live by. It is the reason why they exist and why they are successful.
The success did not come easy, in 1999 Andy Macaulay, Elspeth Lynn and Lorraine Tao were at a
crossroads looking down the path they saw a chance to strike out as partners at their own agency. Andy
pitched them his idea to start an agency and in May of 1999 they were off and running. At the start of
this venture Andy was the business guy with Lynn and Tao the creative core. Since then Zig has grown
from a small 3 agency shop to a world recognized and award winning full service communications
company. Now they have a diverse array of clients such as Ikea, Toshiba, Unilever and Corus
Entertainment among others. So what does it mean to Zig, the definition from merriam-webster’s is one
of the sharp turnsi and that is what Zig was when it began for the three of them. It was a perilous change
in direction a chance to live or die by their own sword and not only have they survived since opening,
they have thrived.

Culture
They have thrived because of the culture they have built
based on the precident set by its partners. Zig is a 125
strong agency with 110 headquartered in Toronto and 15
in Chicago. Zig’s success is a testament to the creativity
and business savvy of everyone involved. In the heart of
Toronto’s Entertainment district and their office seems
A new Zig office opens up in Chicago
formally Hadrian’s Wall
more like loft than an actual office which is indicative of
the culture they exude. The casual space on the lower level has a fuzzball table that calls to anyone
walking past. Right by there is the infamous black leather couch offering the weary a soft place to rest.
This is a couch with a history, Lynn and her then boyfriend Rob Guenette now President of Taxi bought
the couch in the early 90’s now it is home of the sleepy at Zig’s offices.ii This is a space for everyone that
is a way to maintain the intimate agency feel in an agency of 125 people across two offices.
Zig is a take off the full agency model with a unique management system. Katrina Limbaugh, The
Director of Corporate Communications says that Zig is a very open place. They have no formal
departments, and the silos of a traditional agency have been taken down leading to an inviting culture
where creativity can flourish. Within Zig they try to erase the lines between departments where ever
possible. This has meant that there is a lot of overlap among the traditional disciplines allowing ideas
and insights to come from anywhere and everywhere.iii To the uninitiated this may come across as
insanity but to those who live in the maelstrom, it is an organized chaos that has served them well. It
also allows for people with different positions to learn more from others making everyone better
equipped to handle the challenges of the business.

Partners, Mergers and Subsidiaries
Other Branches
Push Interactive is Zig’s digital PUSH INTERACTIVE
subsidiary who works on making the 469a King St W,
web work for clients and is headed up Toronto, ON
by Cameron Wykes Executive Creative M5V 3M4
Director, Digital + Partner. 416-422-7292
Things got even more chaotic when in 2004 having grown so much Zig became an MDC Partner’s
company and acquired a 49.9 percent stake in the firm. What this means is that Zig is a private company
owned and operated by its partners with MDC Partners having a minority stake in the company. MDC
Partners is a portfolio of agencies and marketing companies that are leaders in the industry. These
companies provide strategic and innovative solutions to their clients. This added Zig to a long list of MDC
companies the likes of Crispin Porter + Bogusky, BOOM Marketing, Colle McVoy and many others
totalling 37 in all as of 2008. This partnership would help accelerate Zig’s development and provide the
foundation they needed to expand.
In 2006 Zig continued it accelerated growth with their entrance into the US
market via the acquisition of Hadrian’s Wall in Chicago. Their philosophy is do
good work for people you likeiv and Kevin’s Lynch relationship with Andy
during their time at Roche Macaulay & Partners made this a natural fit. In June
2008 it was announced that MDC Partner Companies ACLC also located in
Toronto would merge with Zig and operate under the Zig banner.v According to Katrina what this has
done is add some real depth to the digital resources and capabilities of Zig in the form of Push
Interactive. Push did Toshiba’s Ask the Sherpa at http://www.askthesherpa.ca/ as a way to hype Toshiba
Canada's Satellite A300 and Qosmio laptops while Zig’s in-house media group drove people to the site.vi
5

6. zig ideas in their most powerful form
So why join with ACLC? ACLC’s strong client partnerships are a perfect match to Zig’s creative vision and
this will allow the new combined firm to produce more integrated campaigns and offer a more complete
packages to all their clientsvii. The new Zig retains the clients from both firms to create a stronger and
more effective agency moving forward. Every day is a day for ideas and this is now a time of change for
Zig. This merger has lead to positive change at Zig and will allow the firm more capacity to offer a
complete range of services from media planning, strategy or digital, the merger blows open the doors of
what is possible.
Media
From digital to media as a full service agency Zig has its own dedicated media people who have ability to
plan and buy media for their clients. They also work with a client’s pre-existing media partners. They will
handle media in the way that makes the most sense for their clients with their media capability
enhanced due to the incorporation of ACLC’s strong media platform.viii
This is the who’s who of zig?
zig?
The creative staff is broken down into teams and accounts are assigned to different people. Steve Carli a
Managing Director is responsible for their US clients and Kevin Lynch Partner and Creative Director is
responsible for creative in their Chicago office. With Christian Mathieu Managing Director in their
Toronto office managing several accounts, he is fluent in three languages and can speak client-ese a rare
gift in great demand at an agency. ix Cameron Wykes, is Zig’s digital guru, the all knowing one when it
comes to the digital space and is the leader of Push Interactive Zig’s digital arm.
Along with him this past April Martin Beauvais became the Executive Creative Director for Zig a new
position at the firm where he is responsible for overseeing all creative at the company. “Reporting to
Beauvais will be Aaron Starkman and Stephen Leps, creative directors in Toronto who oversee the

Molson account, Kevin Lynch, creative director in Chicago, as well as Lorraine Tao and Elspeth Lynn,
agency partners who scaled back their creative director duties to do account work as a creative team in
2006.”x He will be able to support their operations in Canada and help Kevin manage the growth in their
US office. This requires care because he will be managing some of the very partners in the business
which is unique to Zig. How this will unfold will be of interest to many inside and out because of the
move’s precedence.xi His appointment shows this is a relationship that is working. While everyone else
moves right they go in their own direction and march to the beat of their own drum.
The drum is beat by Zig’s leaders who have set an example for everyone at the firm, and impute it with
their distinct way of doing things. In this business and at Zig it may be about the idea but ideas come
from the people, they are the magic makers. While Zig may lack departments here is a listing of the
leaders of Zig and their positions with a brief bio on 4 of them.

Andy Macaulay is a founding partner of Zig, he was a former partner and Director of

list. In addition to that he holds a commerce degree from Wilfrid Laurier University.xiii

Ellen DeGeneres has called one of Aaron Starkman spots her favourite and he has won or
been nominated from everything to a D&AD Sharpie and a Cannes Lions. When he isn’t busy
in the business he is probably watching a baseball game with his kids.xiv
If Elspeth Lynn is the emotion then Lorraine Tao is the rational and together they are the
creative dynamo of Zig. They are often profiled together as halves of a whole. First
meeting at Leo Burnett in Toronto they joined Andy Macaulay in forming Zig in 1999 after
a short stay at the now extinct global ad agency Ammirati.xv Lynn will be moving to the UK and Briony
Wilson of DDB Dallas will join the fun at Zig as Lorraine’s partner.
Other Recent Hires and Departures

never know what to expect. So here are the recent happenings at Zig who

with the firm. Also in October Zig hired the creative team of Copywriter Michael Murray and Art Director
Jason Hill from Taxi. They have previously worked on the “International Language of Viagra” campaign
for Pfizer. This team returns to Zig and along with Ikea they worked on Mr. Sub and Virgin Mobile in
2004 and now will add Astral Media and the Canadian Real Estate Board to the list.xvii In June Zig hired

News
The spark is at the heart of what has made Zig tick and there is
always something going on be it a client presentation, a new
creative mind entering the fray or a challenge to meet. The ad
industry is that lives and dies by the unexpected and for Zig it
means doing things their own way. Zig has operated a blog
where Andy, Christian and a few others put their thoughts on the business letting the public and those
interested ad people know their insights. The last post was during the summer and since then it has
remained silent and as of October 24, 2008 the zlog at zigideas.blogspot.com was taken off their site and
is no longer accessible to the public.
In September Zig launched a new multi-media platform
campaign that was build upon the success of their mattress
spots that have the headline “So comfortable you’ll need shorter
bedtime stories. It appears in October’s issue of Style and
Decormag. This campaign will include rich digital ads on major
13

portals with television spots highlighting Ikea’s bedroom furnishings. This is an example of their ability to
tackle more integrated campaigns since their merger with ACLC.xxvi
Recent Account Wins
Every agency is always on the lookout for new clients and here are some Zig’s recent wins. Zig turned
another sharp corner when it was tapped by the New Democratic Party
of Canada for the fall election. This was Zig’s first time in political
advertising although Andy did note that several staff members had
worked on previous campaigns.xxvii One of their ads called “a new kind
of strong” focused on attacking Harper on his stands on the issues. In October Elysian Hotels and Resorts
a luxurious resort company made Zig their agency of record. After a review they will launch their brand
on a global scale starting with their flagship property in Chicago.xxviii
On July 16, 2008 Zig landed the Astral Media Radio account. Zig will create a multimedia campaign for
their Toronto radio stations and work on rebranding their national network of stations. When they got
started with the campaign with their “We Need to Talk” Initiative was a
guerrilla outdoor campaign that showcased sensitive issues like “Is
Toronto a world-class sports city – at losing?” and others.xxix This
showcased the stations ability to tackle the issues and was a unique
way to get the word out in a way that got Astral Media noticed.
In early 2008 Zig was tapped as the agency for Eaux Vives Water Inc. for
their Eska bottled water campaign. Unless you are from Quebec you
probably don’t know about the Eska brand, but it launched in 2007 in
Quebec and Zig has been helping them to brand more broadly. They
produce Canadian natural spring water with an underlying concern for the environment. xxx
14
zigideas.com
15. zig ideas in their most powerful form
question?
To zig or not to zig that is the question?
Everyone always wants to know what makes your agency, your business different than everyone else. At
Zig they refuse to be put into a neat and tidy box, it is the culture and the people that make any agency
different from the next. At Zig this is apparent because they live by example. For Lynn and Tao they had
to become managers when they wanted to be the creatives, this meant that later they had to let some
responsibilities go so they could get back to the creative tag team they are known for.xxxi Zig is an
adaptive agency that is on the move, the recent merger with ACLC has meant that this is not the same
only Zig but a new and stronger one. Their challenge will be on maintaining the culture and creative
vision while being able to respond quickly to the changing conditions on the ground and of their clients.
It all comes back to the idea, the work and the magic. That is what has set Zig apart from the rest. The
thought and insight, the creativity and execution, how they collide and interact is what has made Zig
what it is today. This is a place of organized chaos, where every day a tornado comes to ground and
whereas most businesses would collapse in that environment Zig is able to thrive, in the chaos they are
able to harness that energy and turn it into genius. To Zig means to take a sharp turn and that is how
they run their business, guided by their principles, not limited to the expected and every day turning out
creative gems that help their clients to succeed.
