TechSoup for Libraries: Sustaining Technology to Serve Your Patrons: Dec. 2010

Notas do Editor

  1. TechSoup.org offers nonprofits a one-stop resource for technology needs by providing free information, resources, and support. In addition to online information and resources, we offer a product philanthropy service through which nonprofits can access donated and discounted technology products, generously provided by corporate and nonprofit technology partners.
  2. The MaintainIT Project interviews public librarians and staff from across the country and talk to them about how they support public computers in their library. From how they troubleshoot (or how they don't troubleshoot!), to how they set up wireless or how they solved a particular issue, all of their good ideas are captured, and published them on the web site in free guides called Cookbooks, in articles, and blog posts so that librarians can learn from the experiences of other librarians. It's about NOT reinventing the wheel, so that you can learn from those who came before you. Each Cookbook is packed with tips and techniques from librarians across the country, and each article published delves deep into that particular librarian or staff person’s experiences.
  3. Serving the 21 st century patron
  4. facing similar challenges and can learn from one another’s successes. What really works, what’s the best solution.
  5. Have you ordered? Flip: 149 for camera At TSG: 170 for 2 plus a tripod Windows 7: $199 for professional upgrade; TSG: $8 Symantec endpt protection: $270 for 5 licenses; TSG: $25 for 5
  6. Recently updated our entire catalog, expanding our cross-section of products and offering more powerful equipment configurations. Also introduced new takeback service, which allows RCI product recipients to return used computer equipment back to Redemtech (our refurbishing partner), who will wipe the machines of all data and dispose of them according to their strict environmental policies - all at no cost to the NPO/Library recipient. See launch announcement attached for more info Created a web directory of California-based resources for low-income individuals to access providers of refurbished technology, technical support, affordable internet, and training as a part of our CETF grant initiative. The pages live on TSG’s GreenTech site & can be found at: http://www.techsoup.org/greentech/cetf/index.cfm . There are also downloadable .pdf fliers in both Spanish and English that libraries can print out & post in their facilities that direct folks to these pages on the GreenTech web site. Useful RCI links: Program page: http://www.techsoup.org/stock/rci/default.asp Product category page: http://www.techsoup.org/stock/category.asp?catalog_name=TechSoupMain&category_name=Refurbished+Windows+Computer+Systems&Page=1&Cat1=Hardware&CatCount=1 Program FAQs: http://www.techsoup.org/stock/rci/rcifaq.asp
  7. Also on the web site, you’ll find Features that delve deep into a particular librarian’s or staff person’s experiences. From using open source, to creative partnerships, to successful technical support models, you’ll likely find something you can use in one or more of these articles. You can find all of these articles on the web site.
  8. Tech Planning, Maintenance, tech training, wireless, pc reservation, print management, laptop checkout, gaming, purchasing, policies. You’ll find each Cookbook on the web site as an entire pdf, and also as downloadable chapters so you can find what you need.
  9. The first Cookbook focused on the experiences of rural and small libraries, and covered these topics. However, whether or not you are at a small library, this Cookbook covers the fundamentals, and is a good resource for someone wanting to know a bit more about supporting public computers. You’ll find each Cookbook on the web site as an entire pdf, and also as downloadable chapters so you can find what you need.
  10. Monthly e-newsletter The best way to stay in touch with the project is to receive the monthly newsletter. Learn about upcoming webinars, when the next Cookbooks is published, and more. Go to the web site to sign up Read tales from librarians and staff on the blog! MaintainIT staff and guest library bloggers share what they’re hearing and share their experiences. Check it out!
