To learn and promote research skills in media To consider and evaluate your learning style To produce information that can be used to teach others To work independently and collaboratively  To research, analyse and evaluate  To research the wider area of media studies and its impact  This will help you prepare for the research aspect of your exam next year
The briefs  Film The news Computer games Online communities/social networks
What will I be doing?  Film   A project that looks at an area of the medium of film   (Not the horror genre)   For example  The study of how the British films have developed over time The study of a famous director  A specific Hollywood film studio  The study of a film genre (not horror)  and how it is produced, developed, marketed and received by the audience  The effect of piracy and new media technology on the film industry  The importance of celebrities in selling a film (Stars)  The development of the film industry within society  Narrative and character theory in films   
The briefs The News- Paper based/ TV/Internet  For example:  Looking at the popularity of online news The history of newspapers Discussing TV based news  Promoting ideologies within the news Privacy laws/invasion of privacy  Truth and  protection for the audience Journalism/ grass roots journalism  Press coverage of celebrities
The briefs  Computer games  For example: Online gaming and enjoyment  Considering the dangers of violent games Certification and protection for the audience  Narrative and characters within  The development of computer games over time Marketing of computer games
The briefs  Online communities and social networks  For example:  Why people use them (uses and gratifications)  The danger s of online communities  Research into the growth of online social networking sites How these sites make their money/marketing Invasion of privacy
What might I do for my enquiry question?   We will be doing the brief for online communities/social networking site and we will be focusing on how the audience use online communities in their lives.  We will be looking at the brief for  film focusing on the rise of the Hollywood company universal studios    We will be looking at the brief for the news and researching how celebrities are reported across a range of news.  We will be looking at how piracy and new media technology has impacted the film industry
How many lessons will I have  10 class lessons  Home learning and independent work  Within each brief you will also need to consider the four key media areas  Media Language: forms and conventions Institution Audience Representation
What will be the outcome?  At the end of the 10 class sessions you will be presenting the findings of your research project to the class.  You will show that you started with an enquiry question which you have answered

Tasks 1. Decide the group that you wish to work with  2.What kind of learner you are?  Complete the PLTS skills self assessment sheet.  3.Complete the sheet and consider the types of learners that you have in your group.    4.Highlight the strengths and types of learners within your group   5.In light of this consider the roles you may take on within the group and the skills that you have.    6. Identify and be aware of the learning types that you may not be as strong in and try to take on some of these roles within your group.
