Presentation by Sarah Currier using the example of the SHEEN Sharing project to talk about the utility of Web2.0 tools and features to provide resource sharing and dissemination for a small educational community of practice (in this case Scotland's Employability Coordinators Network). Does Diigo + Netvibes = a repository, or not? How does Diigo + Netvibes allow a small community of practice to interact with formal learning materials repositories such as those supported by ePrints or intraLibrary?

The success of the Google Summer of Code program within ASF demonstrates the interest and potential impact Apache projects could have on grooming next generation software developers. Many projects have benefited from the GSoC contributions and some have succeeded in retaining the students as active PMC members. While GSoC is a good vehicle for potential student committers, we could extend the impact and broaden the reach. Beyond GSoC, currently there is no compelling mechanism for interested students to venture into the 150+ Apache project issue trackers to find out an interesting topic to contribute. We propose to build on the GSoC success and create a common forum for PMC’s to propose topics and volunteer to mentor well defined and suitably scoped student research projects. These student projects create a win-win situation for both the Apache projects and the students. As an exemplar, we will discuss the Apache Airavata project engagement with student academic projects. The globally distributed locations of PMC members of the Apache Airavata project has resulted in the successful launch of many student research projects in the US, Indian and Sri Lanka. Brief descriptions of the projects, their inclusion within existing university curricula and their successes and challenges will be presented. We will then elaborate on how these experiences can be generalized and modeled as a systematic mechanism to catalyze student research projects. While particularly sharing the experiences from developing countries, we discuss how these ideas are globally applicable in exposing students to the ASF model, enabling them to discuss their ideas and work with leading researchers and open source developers around the world, motivating them through virtual hackathons and eventually creating potential pathways to Apache Committership. The proposed effort raises many open questions. However, initiated through this talk, we would like to hear feedback from Apache projects and the user community and take the idea further with the Apache Community Development PMC.

The Ruby ecosystem is pretty awesome when it comes to developing or consuming HTTP APIs. On the publishing front, the Rails framework is an attractive option because it supports publishing what are popularly (but inaccurately) referred to as 'RESTful' APIs quickly and effortlessly. On the consumer side, the Ruby ecosystem provides several very fluent and powerful libraries that make it easy to consume HTTP based APIs. Since a significant proportion of projects today require that APIs be both published and consumed, many of them wind up choosing Ruby as a platform for the reasons mentioned above. This talk is targeted at folks that are currently on such projects, or anticipate being on such projects in the future. We will cover: Consuming HTTP APIs: 1) The basics of making HTTP calls with Ruby 2) The strengths and weaknesses of Ruby's Net::HTTP across 1.8, 1.9 and JRuby (possibly Rubinius if we have the time to do research) 3) Popular HTTP libraries that either make it easier to do HTTP by providing better APIs, make it faster by using libCurl or both 4) Different approaches to deserializing popular encoding formats such as XML and JSON and the pitfalls thereof Producing HTTP APIs using Rails: 1) The basics of REST 2) What Rails gives you out of the box - content-type negotiation, deserialization etc. and the limitations thereof 3) What Rails fails to give you out of the box - hypermedia controls etc. 4) What Rails does wrong - wrong PUT semantics, no support for PATCH, error handling results in responses that violate the clients Accepts header constraints etc. 4) How one can achieve Level 2 on the Richardson Maturity Model of REST using Rails 5) Writing tests for all of this At the end of this, our audience will understand how you can both consume and produce HTTP APIs in the Ruby ecosystem. They will also have a clear idea of what the limitations of such systems are and what the can do to work around the limitations.

In the new world of business information flowing “outside in” instead of “inside out,” every entrepreneur or small business has to pay attention to not only the information on their own website but also the information on the internet. Searching for yourself on Google is no longer narcissistic, but a business requirement. Are you paying attention to buzz about you and are you going to be “liked” “poked” or “buzzed”? Where do you start? How much time do you spend and is building a new media “you” this really worth it? Drawn from his career as a chef to his role as a new media expert, Shashi has the answers. This session may be the final straw that breaks your resistance to open your profiles and let the world know why you and your business rocks – maybe all in 140 characters!

This presentation showcases, discusses and reflects upon the work of the C-SAP "Open Educational Resources" project. Our project, "Evaluating the Practice of Opening up Resources for Learning and Teaching in the Social Sciences", was part of a pilot programme (funded by the HEA and JISC), which sought to explore issues around the sharing of educational material from a disciplinary perspective. Whilst exploring, with our academic project partners, the principles and issues around releasing educational material (institutional, contractual, administrative), we have also sought to develop some insights into the processes of sharing practice, and look forward to discussing the findings in this forum.

Implementing open education practices is a multidimensional challenge for educators. In this session the presenters share data and findings from their research into the practical challenges of open education practices implementation in higher education. Using the analogy of mixing different audio tracks to produce a harmonious acoustic blend, they discuss the blend of elements that need to be considered and balanced in promoting open educational practices. The presentation is followed by small group discussions to further explore solutions to challenges raised.

Wizards are very useful for creating a good user experience. In all businesses, interactive sessions are most beneficial. To improve the user experience, wizards in Odoo provide an interactive session. For creating wizards, we can use transient models or abstract models. This gives features of a model class except the data storing. Transient and abstract models have permanent database persistence. For them, database tables are made, and the records in such tables are kept until they are specifically erased.
