Critical analysis (personal review)
 Discussion of the story of the movie: Hugo Cabret, a 12-year-old boy, lived with
his widowed father, a master clockmaker in Paris. Hugo's father often took him to
see films and his father particularly loved the films of Georges Méliès. Hugo's
father died in a museum fire, and Hugo was taken away by his uncle,
an alcoholic watchmaker who was responsible for maintaining the clocks in the
railway station Gare Montparnasse. His uncle taught him to take care of the
clocks and then disappeared.
Hugo lived between the walls of the station, maintaining the clocks, stealing food
and working on his father's most ambitious project, repairing a broken
automaton, a mechanical man who is supposed to write with a pen. Hugo wanted
to fix this automaton. He steals mechanical parts to repair the automaton, but he
was caught by a toy store owner, Papa Georges, who took Hugo's notebook from
him.
To recover the notebook, Hugo followed the shopkeeper to his house and met
Georges' goddaughter Isabelle. She promised to help Hugo. The next day,
Georges gave some ashes to Hugo, referring to them as the notebook's remains,
but Isabelle informed him that the notebook was not burned. Finally he agreed
that Hugo may earn the notebook back by working for him until he pays for all
the things he stole from the shop. Hugo started to work in the toy shop, and in
his time off manages to fix the automaton, but it was still missing one part—a
heart–shaped key.
Hugo introduced Isabelle to the movies, which her godfather had never let her
see. Isabelle turned out to have the key to the automaton. When they used the
key to activate the automaton, it produces a drawing of a film scene, signed by
Georges Méliès. Hugo remembered it is the film his father always talked about as
5
the first film he ever saw (Voyage to the Moon) and Isabelle recognized the
signature as being the name of her godfather, Papa Georges and both of them
take it to Isabelle’s home for an explanation.
Hugo showed Georges' wife Mama Jeanne the drawing made by the automaton,
but she wouldn’t tell them anything and makes them hide in a room when
Georges was coming home. While hiding, Isabelle and Hugo find a secret cabinet
and accidentally release pictures and screen boards of Georges' creations - the
noise attracts Georges, who is deeply upset and throws Hugo out, feeling
betrayed.
Hugo, Isabelle and Tabard went to Georges' home, and Tabard was able to
convince Jannne to show “Voyage to the Moon”. As they finish watching the film,
Georges appears and explains how he came to make movies, invented the special
effects, and how he lost faith in films when World War I began, being forced to
sell his films as chemicals to get money, and opening the toy shop to survive. He
also believed the automaton he created was lost in the museum fire and nothing
remains of his life's work.
Hugo goes back to the station to get the automaton, to surprise Georges, but he
was cornered by the station inspector and his dog. Hugo tried much to escape
but at last he was trapped by the inspector and the automaton was thrown onto
the railway tracks. Climbing onto the tracks, Hugo was almost run over by an
approaching train but the officer saved him. While Hugo pleads with the officer,
Georges arrives and says Hugo is in his care. The officer lets him go.
At the end of the movie, Georges introduced a tribute ceremony to his movies
with Tabard announcing that over 80 films have been recovered and restored.
Georges thanks Hugo for his actions and invited the audience to "follow his
dreams".

 Settings (venue): The movie was shot in Paris. According to the plot’s timeline
the situation & statement of Paris in that time was perfectly Showed in the
movie. And viewers can easily imagine that time’s situation of Paris. This credit
really goes to the crews of the movie.
 Construction (positive/negative): The movie’s construction is really admirable.
The movie was shot in Paris which is the Plot’s required place. And the venue is
really appropriate for the movie. Creating the situation of a time such 1931 is too
difficult. But it’s construction really able to give the real feel to the viewers of the
time. The costumes were also very appropriate. The stuffs which were used on
that time were appeared in the movie. The graphical effect of the movie was
awesome. In a word, the movie is constructed very well and viewers enjoyed that
very much.
 Acting: The screenplay of the movie was awesome. The performers of this movie
are quite talented. So they were able to act in the movie very spontaneously. The
hero character of the movie “Hugo cabret” was played very flexibly by a
newcomer “Asa Butterfield”. He acted just like an experienced actor. His
supporting character “Isabelle” played by “Chloe Grace Moretz” was simply
negotiable. “The Inspector” character which was played by “Sacha Baron Cohen”.
His acting added a new sphere in the movie. And “Ben kingsley” who played as
“George Méliès” gave the heart in the movie.
 Dialogue: The dialogues of the movie were appropriate according to the plot’s
timeline. The dialogues were very gentle as we speak. No slangs were used in the
movie. In a word, the dialogues of the movie were simply awesome.
7
 Finishing of the movie: This movie maintains its sequence serially. Hugo was an
orphan boy. His father had a dream to fix automaton. But his dream was not
fulfilled. Hugo decided to fix his father’s most ambitious project by helping a
notebook which had given from his father. To fulfill his ambition, he struggled
much and faced many obstacles one after another. But he did not give up. At the
end of the movie he was able to reach his goal.
 Moral justification: In this movie, we see Hugo’s willing & his hard working. He
had many obstacles but he didn’t give up. He struggled much & at last reached
his goal. From this, anyone can learn how to cross all obstacles & reach the goal
perfectly.
 Conclusion: From this term paper we have reviewed a Movie named “HUGO”
which is a very enjoyable & instructive movie. We have chosen this movie
because there is something to learn from this movie.

  • 6. 5 the first film he ever saw (Voyage to the Moon) and Isabelle recognized the signature as being the name of her godfather, Papa Georges and both of them take it to Isabelle’s home for an explanation. Hugo showed Georges' wife Mama Jeanne the drawing made by the automaton, but she wouldn’t tell them anything and makes them hide in a room when Georges was coming home. While hiding, Isabelle and Hugo find a secret cabinet and accidentally release pictures and screen boards of Georges' creations - the noise attracts Georges, who is deeply upset and throws Hugo out, feeling betrayed. Hugo, Isabelle and Tabard went to Georges' home, and Tabard was able to convince Jannne to show “Voyage to the Moon”. As they finish watching the film, Georges appears and explains how he came to make movies, invented the special effects, and how he lost faith in films when World War I began, being forced to sell his films as chemicals to get money, and opening the toy shop to survive. He also believed the automaton he created was lost in the museum fire and nothing remains of his life's work. Hugo goes back to the station to get the automaton, to surprise Georges, but he was cornered by the station inspector and his dog. Hugo tried much to escape but at last he was trapped by the inspector and the automaton was thrown onto the railway tracks. Climbing onto the tracks, Hugo was almost run over by an approaching train but the officer saved him. While Hugo pleads with the officer, Georges arrives and says Hugo is in his care. The officer lets him go. At the end of the movie, Georges introduced a tribute ceremony to his movies with Tabard announcing that over 80 films have been recovered and restored. Georges thanks Hugo for his actions and invited the audience to "follow his dreams".
