3. Pupil 1(P1) –Looming out of the eventful pages of Ukrainian history and casting all
others into the shadow, is the figure of Taras Shevchenko – the great Ukrainian poet,
painter and martyr. Even nowadays all Ukrainian people fall under the sway of his
influence. The unusual power of his works have evoked for him such a feeling of
love, respect and submission among our people. He was a great poet, who became
world famous – when our Ukrainian language became known among other
nationalities.
Pupils show the presentation: “Taras Shevchenko – the Great Ukrainian Poet,
Painter and Martyr”.
P1 – T.G. Shevchenko had his uneasy and full of experience life but he never
withdrew his desires to see the Ukrainian people living freely and happily. He wrote
about it in his poems and now we’ll listen to our classmates who will recite some
poems by T. Shevchenko.
The pupils recite the poems by T.G. Shevchenko:

III.
P1 – In1859 Shevchenko was allowed to visit Ukraine and it turned out to be his last
visit before his death on March 10, 1861. At first he was buried in St. Petersburg but
his friends wanted to fulfill the poet’s wish that he had expressed in his “Testament”
and took his remains to Ukraine, where he was buried on a high hill over the
DniproRiver, near the town of Kaniv.
Two pupils of the form recite the poem “Testament” in two versions: Ukrainian and
English.
T. – The creative group of pupils got the task beforehand. They tried to translate the
poem by T.G. (1847). It’s their first experience
in translating poems into English. Let’s listen to them. (The pupil recites the poem.)
P1 – It is difficult to estimate the value of T.G. Shevchenko for Ukrainian and the
world literature. He shows the heart of Ukrainian people to everyone who cares and
if you want to understand “the mysterious Ukrainian soul” - read the poems of T.
Shevchenko and look at his drawings and paintings.

I’mlooking at thesky
I’m looking at the sky and thinking about
Why I’m not a falcon, why I’ not flying,
Why have not you given me wings, my dear God?
I would live this land and fly in this sky!
Along way behind clouds, a long way from this world
To look for a good fate regards instead of grief
And ask kind affection at stars and the sun,
And sink all my troubles in their clear light.
Because from my childhood a fate did not like me
I’m hireling at my fate and wandering fellow
I’m strange at a fate and neighbouring people.
Did ever somebody love own child!
Translated by A. Bezborodov
Testament
Did my grave and raise my barrow
By the Dnieper – side
In Ukraine, my old land,
A fair land and wide.
I will lie and watch the cornfields,
Listen through the years
To the river voices roaring,
Roaring in my ears.
Bury me; be done with me,
Rise and break your chain,
Water your new liberty
With blood for rain.
Then in the mighty family
Off all men that are free,
May be, sometimes, very softly
You will speak of me?
Translated by E.L. Voinich (1864-1960)
Thoughts, my thoughts
Thoughts, my thoughts
You’re the only mine,
Don’t leave me alone
When I have a bad time.
Come flying, my dear,
Dove-coloured ideas,
From behind the wide Dnipro
To the step for walking
With poor kirghizes.
They’ve already been poor
And too bare…But those who’re free
Are still praying to God of theirs.
Come flying, my dear thoughts,
You are like little children,
I’ll greet you with quiet words
And we’ll have cried together.
