2. The Benefits of All Day Pre-K
FOR English Language Learners.
•
Many students are
entering schools ill
prepared for today’s
academic
requirements.
•
This is a growing
concern for teachers
when closing the gap
of
achievement, particula
rly for low income and
English language
learners
•
Research shows that
students who enter
kindergarten with
preschool experience
are ahead in early
reading and math skills
and that this boost
continues throughout
their educational
career.
3. The Benefits of All Day Pre-K
FOR English Language Learners.
• Hispanic children lag behind their white and
Asian-American peers at all proficiency levels
of reading and mathematics at the beginning
and throughout Pre-K – 12.
• In order for Hispanic students to succeed in
academics, interventions and learning
opportunities need to be set in place during the
early years. Studies show that Hispanic
students benefit from high quality
prekindergarten programs
4. Why Is This Important to Me?
CES has seen an increase in the English
Language Learners in the past five years.
These students are entering kindergarten
with a wider range of academic skills.
5. Hypothesis
• The researcher suspects that Pre-K experience
contributes to acquisition, or lack thereof, of
school readiness for English Language
Learners.
6. Research Question
• What is the impact of full-day academic Pre-K
programs on English Language Learners’
acquisition of reading/math/social skills upon
entering Kindergarten?
